## About Wowza Streaming
Wowza Streaming Engine is a self-managed video streaming server that ingests, transcodes, and delivers live and on-demand video across any protocol, codec, and deployment environment. It gives engineering teams full control over their streaming infrastructure, whether running on-premises, in private or public cloud, hybrid, edge, or air-gapped environments. Wowza Streaming Engine powers video workflows for Fortune 500 enterprises, government agencies, broadcasters, surveillance operators, and platform builders across more than 170 countries. Wowza Streaming Engine supports a broad set of streaming protocols including RTSP, RTMP, RTMPS, WebRTC, SRT, UDP, MPEG-TS, HLS, LL-HLS, and MPEG-DASH. This protocol flexibility allows teams to ingest from IP cameras, broadcast encoders, mobile devices, IoT and edge cameras, and file-based VOD sources, then deliver to any endpoint with the latency profile each use case requires. Sub-second delivery is supported for interactive use cases like sports betting, auctions, and remote operations, while adaptive bitrate streaming handles large-scale OTT and live event distribution. Wowza Streaming Engine runs on x86 and ARM hardware, in Docker and Kubernetes, with GPU acceleration, and across AWS, Azure, GCP, or private cloud environments, including air-gapped configurations where SaaS streaming platforms cannot operate. This makes Wowza Streaming Engine well-suited for defense, public safety, election transparency, industrial monitoring, and large-scale camera networks like the 1,300+ traffic cameras managed by Mississippi DOT. Extensibility and observability are built in. REST APIs, Java APIs, custom modules, SDKs, and MCP server support allow teams to integrate Wowza Streaming Engine with third-party video management systems, content delivery networks, identity providers, analytics engines, and storage systems. Webhooks, real-time alerting, audit logging, and confidence monitoring give operations teams visibility into stream health and system events. The Wowza Video Intelligence Framework adds AI and computer vision capabilities, routing video frames to customer-owned models for object detection, event logging, and metadata enrichment, with results delivered as HLS timed metadata, burned-in overlays, structured webhooks, or log streams. Wowza Streaming Engine is supported by Wowza Design Center, a set of expert-led service plans that pair certified Wowza architects and engineers with customer teams for installation, architecture review, performance tuning, custom module development, and ongoing optimization. This combination of self-managed software and access to senior streaming engineers gives teams a path from initial deployment through production-scale operation.

## Wowza Streaming Reviews
 ### 1. Good facility for flexible customization, But Support and New Release Bugs Can Be Frustrating

**Rating:** 3.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** akshay k. | Senior Software Engineer, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** July 10, 2026

**What do you like best about Wowza Streaming?**

The best thing that I like is that the flexibility to add our custom code so that we override some of the functions and achieve some output in a different or customised way. For example extracting the HLS, CMAF chunks using their PushPublishHTTPCupertino class so that we can easily upload these chunks to S3 or whatever storage.

**What do you dislike about Wowza Streaming?**

The most irritating part is when we reach out to their customer support. Even for a simple issue they keep asking all the config and log files for review. But I don't know if they really spend to review all these files or if they really use these files to reproduce the issue on their side. Basically, dealing with their support person sometimes really becomes tedious. Also it is really difficult to convince them about the bug that we identify in Wowza. Another thing is sometimes it happens that with their new releases they keep adding the bugs in a workflow, which was working fine in their previous versions and that becomes really frustrating. And they keep insisting us to upgrade to their latest versions, which is not possible everytime when we have it running in the production systems. Every now and them we can not spend time to test their latest versions and push it to production.

**What problems is Wowza Streaming solving and how is that benefiting you?**

They really solves the end-to-end video streaming problems when it comes to different types of protocols. As said previously the flexibility or the control that we get to add our custom code module benefits us a lot, which is really difficult when we chose to work with other streaming services.

 ### 2. Wowza Streaming: a stable and comprehensive solution for live and secure streaming

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Benjamin D. | P, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** July 08, 2026

**What do you like best about Wowza Streaming?**

We used Wowza Streaming to manage access to our subscriber-only videos, both for live masterclasses and streaming broadcasts.

We particularly appreciated the numerous configuration options, including the creation of secure links to allow only authorized users to view the content. It is a comprehensive solution that allows for the management of both live streams and streaming content, making it ready-to-use and suitable for different purposes.

As with any system of this type, a bit of time investment is required initially for installation and configuration. But once in place, we did not encounter any particular problems: the operation remained stable and reliable.

**What do you dislike about Wowza Streaming?**

An added benefit would be the ability to perform automatic updates, as doing them manually takes a bit of time and requires a minimum of know-how.

**What problems is Wowza Streaming solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Allows broadcasting both live streams and recorded streams without having to store different versions on the disk. From the source, it generates and caches all necessary files (HLS, etc.), without occupying additional disk space.

 ### 3. 11 Years of Rock-Solid Reliability with Wowza Streaming Engine

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Reid S. | President & COO, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** July 07, 2026

**What do you like best about Wowza Streaming?**

We have been using Wowza Streaming Engine at our company for 11 years now. With the myriad of things that can go wrong with live streaming - I can't think of a single instance where the issue was trace routed back to Wowza Streaming Engine. Amongst the myriad of variables - from live stream operator knowledge, internet hiccups and outages, gear malfunctions, CDN node outages and the variables that want to play interference with a successful live stream - I can whole heartedly say Wowza is bottom of the barrel in the "blame game". Admittedly we are ona fairly old version of Wowza Streaming Engine as we believe in "if it's not broke don't fix it" and it's been overwhelming solid. We use the software hosted on Azure VM's.

**What do you dislike about Wowza Streaming?**

Sometimes it takes a while to load all the way, and navigate around in the interface - even on a smoking Azure VM. That said - as we use an older version of Wowza Streaming Engine - this could have been fixed eons ago. Ultimately it's nothing cripping by any stretch.

**What problems is Wowza Streaming solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Wowza Streaming Engine solves our way of handling a variety of live streams operated by clients without having to deal with channels - we use Azure API to allow clients to boot up Azure and use the Wowza API to overlay streaming stats over the live stream - such as the stream uptime and quality. Basically knowing it's super reliable ensures we have clients operating live streams on the weekends without Wowza being in the equation for issues.

 ### 4. Reliable Streaming with Stellar Support and Config Complexity

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Rashmitha J. | developer, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** July 08, 2026

**What do you like best about Wowza Streaming?**

I use Wowza Streaming for delivering reliable live streaming services across multiple devices and platforms, which helps us manage and distribute streaming content efficiently. During our upgrade, the platform's support team was very helpful, and the process was smooth and easy. I like how reliable the streaming platform is, offering good performance and flexibility. The support or customer service is great, as they are very helpful whenever something goes wrong. They successfully helped us with a folder mismatch issue during an upgrade, providing clear communication that was very helpful.

**What do you dislike about Wowza Streaming?**

Some configurations are complex and require technical knowledge, especially during setup and upgrade. Initially, it was very difficult to understand after setup.

**What problems is Wowza Streaming solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I use Wowza Streaming for reliable live streaming across devices, making content management efficient. The support team minimizes disruptions during upgrades. Its flexibility and smooth upgrades are valuable, though initial setup is complex.

 ### 5. Robust, Stable Live Streaming with Wowza Streaming Engine

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Rick C. | Web Developer, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** July 09, 2026

**What do you like best about Wowza Streaming?**

We have been using Wowza Streaming Engine for many years and for our self-hosted live stream it has been a robust and stable solution with no performance issues.

**What do you dislike about Wowza Streaming?**

First time setup was not easy, but we had our live stream working within a day using the provided easy to follow documentation.

Upgrading Wowza Streaming Engine with the various Java updates and installing the Streamlock certificate was a challenge, but the one and only time I contacted Wowza support the issue was sorted out within 24hrs.

**What problems is Wowza Streaming solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Wowza Streaming Engine is benefiting us by being a high performance, high-quality output solution that integrates with all our other software so we can stream to global audiences.

 ### 6. 15+ Years of Rock-Solid, Cross-Platform Live Streaming with Wowza Streaming

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** David V. | multimedia services, E-Learning, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** July 14, 2026

**What do you like best about Wowza Streaming?**

We use wowza streaming for over 15 years in production and it is working very stable and live streaming is working on all platforms without any problems all that time. Now we have 3 physical servers and largest live stream on one server was with over 2.000 concurrent clients.

**What do you dislike about Wowza Streaming?**

We have sometimes lot's of concurrent live streams with small number of clients (up to 100) and we are still looking for smooth solution on how to do load balancing all this streams over 3 physical servers.

**What problems is Wowza Streaming solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Wowza allows us to provide live streaming services to users (primary and secondary schools, colleges and universities) in Slovenia.

 ### 7. Awful Upgrades and Out-of-Memory Crashes Under Heavy Load

**Rating:** 1.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Information Technology and Services | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** July 15, 2026

**What do you like best about Wowza Streaming?**

It is configurable via xml files and runs on a linux platform.
It provides reliable streams at medium and low usage levels.

**What do you dislike about Wowza Streaming?**

The in-place software upgrade is awful. It can result in broken features as old configuration files are not parsed for deprecated or removed settings/syntax and other aspects of on disk storage are not updated to match the expectation of the new software version. Files and directories are named very poorly during the upgrade. Lots of manually discover or repair is required.
Under heavy load the entire server can crash with a out of memory error. There is no obvious attempt to mitigate this problem; all your streams die.

**What problems is Wowza Streaming solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Provides a platform to distribute multiple live streams and a library of VODs.

**Official Response from Melissa Geise:**

> Thank you for taking the time to share this detailed feedback. We're sorry your upgrade and performance experience hasn't met expectations, and we'd like to help.
On upgrades: recent versions of Wowza Streaming Engine include a rollback option, so if an update introduces issues, you can revert to your previous version without manual repair. It sounds like this didn't go smoothly in your environment, and our support team can walk through your configuration to make sure future upgrades are clean and to flag any deprecated settings before they cause problems.
On the out-of-memory crashes: stream capacity depends heavily on server resources, and our team can help review your workload and hardware sizing, plus tuning options like Java heap allocation, to keep streams stable under peak load. There may be meaningful headroom available with a few configuration changes.
We'd welcome the chance to work through both issues directly. Please feel free to reach out to our support team at wowza.com/support. Thank you for being a Wowza customer, and we appreciate the candid feedback as it helps us improve.

 ### 8. Wowza is a no-issue streaming engine.

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Rohit G. | CTO, Education Management, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** November 13, 2024

**What do you like best about Wowza Streaming?**

It’s a very reliable platform for both live streaming and VoD, offering a lot of flexibility for encoding, transcoding, and distributing videos. It supports a wide range of protocols—like HLS, RTMP, and WebRTC—along with its cloud integrations.

**What do you dislike about Wowza Streaming?**

Wowza offers a lot of features, but this can make the setup process complex for new users who are not familiar with streaming technology. In our case - beginners felt that there is a steep learning curve.

**What problems is Wowza Streaming solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Wowza provides a scalable architecture that can handle both high volumes of viewers and large amounts of content. It supports dynamic bandwidth allocation and adaptive bitrate streaming (ABR), ensuring that streams are delivered at optimal quality based on the viewer's internet connection and device capabilities.
