## Sophos Firewall Reviews
  ### 1. Synchronized Security on Sophos XGS: Instant Threat Isolation and Simple RED VPN Setup

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Anup A. | Network Security Engineer, Information Services, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** July 07, 2026

**What do you like best about Sophos Firewall?**

The best part of running Sophos firewall is the Synchronized Security ecosystem via Sophos central if you use their endpoint protection alongside the firewall the security heartbeat feature a massive time-saver If a user download something nasty and their mac gets infected the firewall catches the red status heartbeat and instantly cuts them off from the rest of the local subnets and VLANs before it can spread laterally. you don't have to manually scramble to trace the MAC address and shut down the switch port while an outbreak is happening.
the web interface is visually clean and having the control center dashboard
map out active threats, live traffic spikes and unclassified applications right when you log in gives a great high-level health snapshot also setting up site to site VPN tunnels using their RED (Remote Ethernet device) protocol for our smaller branch offices was surprisingly simple- pretty much zero-touch provisioning compared to the usual tedious IPsec configurations on older appliances.

**What do you dislike about Sophos Firewall?**

The local web admin console can get a bit sluggish when you're parching through deep packet inspection logs or modifying heavy firewall rules during peak traffic hours the UI spins for a second or two too long through to be fair, they've optimized the backend speed quite a bit in the recent v20 firmware updates so its's getting better.
Also troubleshooting complex policy inheritance can turn into a minor headache forcing you to dig through the log viewer in a separate pop-upwindow. it feels a bit clunky at first but once you get used to the search syntax and filters within the log viewer you can usually track down the conflicting rule pretty fast we also viewer you can usually track down the conflicting rule pretty fast.

**What problems is Sophos Firewall solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We replaced a fragmented mess of standalone firewalls and unmanaged edge device across our locations. Sophos completely solved our visibility problem.
the biggest benefit is having a single, unified plane of glass is the cloud to push network policies manage we interface filtering, and handle SD-WAN routing without needing a massive team to oversee it. It has given us way tighter control overshadow IT and unauthorized VPNs or torrenting on the corporate network because the Xstream DPI engine actually categorizes evasive apps by their behavior rather than just guessing by the port number it makes life easier IT team because we aren't chasing ghosts the logs tell us exactly who what and where a threat is origination.

  ### 2. Powerful and easy-to-manage perimeter security

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Juan P. | Cybersecurity Pre-sales Engineer, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** June 23, 2026

**What do you like best about Sophos Firewall?**

What I like most about Sophos Firewall is the combination of ease of management, high level of protection, and integration with the rest of the Sophos ecosystem. The management console is intuitive and allows for quick configuration of security policies, VPN, application control, web filtering, and traffic inspection, which significantly reduces the time spent on operational tasks and facilitates network monitoring from a single panel.

The integration with Sophos Central and Sophos Endpoint is one of its biggest differentiators. Thanks to the Synchronized Security functionality, the firewall can exchange information with endpoints to detect compromised devices and apply automatic containment measures, significantly improving incident response times and reducing manual intervention.

In terms of performance, the solution has proven to be stable even in environments with high traffic demand and with multiple security functions enabled simultaneously, such as IPS, SSL/TLS inspection, and application control. This allows for maintaining a high level of protection without significantly affecting user experience.

I also highlight the technical support and available documentation. The knowledge base, implementation guides, and support team backing facilitate incident resolution and accelerate deployment and update processes.

Another interesting aspect is the incorporation of AI-based capabilities and threat analysis, which help identify anomalous behaviors, prioritize alerts, and improve the detection of emerging threats, complementing traditional security policies.

Finally, I believe that Sophos Firewall offers an excellent return on investment. It brings together advanced functionalities such as IPS, VPN, web filtering, threat protection, SSL/TLS inspection, application control, and reporting in a single platform, avoiding the need to acquire multiple independent solutions. This reduces operational costs, simplifies management, and improves the overall cybersecurity posture of the organization.

**What do you dislike about Sophos Firewall?**

Although Sophos Firewall offers a wide variety of functionalities, some advanced configurations can be complex for administrators with little experience. In scenarios where very specific NAT, routing, or traffic inspection policies are required, the learning curve can be steeper than expected, and sometimes it is necessary to consult the documentation or resort to technical support.

Another aspect that could be improved is the generation of reports and the customization of some monitoring panels. While the available information is very comprehensive, it would be useful to have more options to create custom dashboards and reports without relying on additional tools or more advanced configurations.

I also believe that some functions based on artificial intelligence and analytics could offer more proactive recommendations for optimizing security policies and detecting risky configurations, further facilitating daily administration.

Finally, although technical support is usually effective, in some complex cases the response times could be reduced, especially when it comes to critical incidents that require the involvement of higher levels of support. Improving these times would help minimize the operational impact on organizations.

**What problems is Sophos Firewall solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Before implementing Sophos Firewall, perimeter security management required the use of multiple tools and greater manual intervention to monitor traffic, apply security policies, and respond to incidents. This increased management time and made it difficult to obtain a unified view of the network's status.

With Sophos Firewall, we managed to centralize security management on a single platform. Now we can control Internet access, protect applications, establish secure VPN connections, inspect encrypted traffic, prevent intrusions, and gain real-time visibility into network behavior from a single console. Thanks to integration with Sophos Central and Sophos Endpoint, it is also possible to automatically contain compromised devices, significantly reducing response time to security incidents.

The implementation has allowed us to decrease the time spent on administrative and monitoring tasks, simplify security policy management, and reduce operational complexity by consolidating several functions into a single solution. Additionally, the high performance of the firewall has enabled us to activate advanced protection features without affecting the end-user experience.

In business terms, this translates into a better cybersecurity posture, a reduction in risks associated with external threats, and lower operational costs by avoiding the need to implement and manage multiple independent solutions. As a result, the IT team can dedicate more time to strategic initiatives and less to operational tasks and manual incident response.

While I generally rate Sophos Firewall highly, there are several areas that can be frustrating, especially in enterprise environments.

1.Troubleshooting Complex Policies Can Be Time Consuming
2.Interface Can Become Cluttered
3. Third-Party Ecosystem Is Smaller

**What problems is Sophos Firewall solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Sophos Firewall is solving several key security and operational challenges for our organization: unauthorized access prevention, web security, and visibility into network activity.

One of the biggest benefits is its ability to integrate with Sophos endpoint security through Security Heartbeat, allowing us to quickly identify compromised devices and automatically restrict their network access before threats can spread. This helps reduce the risk of malware, ransomware, and other cyberattacks.

Sophos Firewall also provides advanced web filtering, intrusion prevention, application control, and VPN services, which enable us to securely support both office-based and remote users. The centralized management and real-time reporting improve our visibility into network traffic and user activity, making it easier to investigate issues and respond to security incidents.

From an operational standpoint, Sophos has helped simplify firewall administration, reduce manual monitoring efforts, and strengthen our overall security posture without significantly increasing management overhead. The result is improved protection, better compliance, greater network reliability, and increased confidence that our systems and data remain secure.

**Reviewed Date:** June 23, 2026

**What do you like best about Sophos Firewall?**

Its user-friendly management console, along with its Sophos Central integration, are two of the things I like best.

**What do you dislike about Sophos Firewall?**

I’d say firmware upgrades sometimes require careful planning and thorough testing to avoid unexpected issues. Log analysis and reporting could also offer more customization, ideally without requiring additional tools.

**What problems is Sophos Firewall solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We struggled with fragmented network visibility and the overhead of managing firewall appliances in silos across a multi-branch infrastructure. We also faced challenges with lateral threat propagation risks and maintaining stable remote access configurations.

But now we can centrally administer our network security posture from a single pane of glass, isolate internal traffic via strict VLAN segmentation, and deploy reliable SSL VPN access.

This has resulted in a dramatic reduction in administrative overhead, faster incident response times through automated threat containment, and consistent policy enforcement across all organizational branches.

Quantifiable Benefits
Time Saved in Management: Transitioning to centralized management has reduced the time spent on routine configuration changes and firmware updates by an estimated 30% to 40%, eliminating the need to log into individual site appliances independently.

Accelerated Incident Response: Automated host isolation features have cut threat containment windows down from hours to seconds, preventing malware from spreading laterally across internal network segments.

Reduced Support Ticket Volumes: Optimizing web policies and refining user access controls has resulted in a 25% decrease in network-related troubleshooting and access remediation tickets.

  ### 5. Sophos Firewall: robust security and centralized management

**What do you like best about Sophos Firewall?**

The most useful aspect of Sophos Firewall is that it allows centralized management of network security, with good visibility of traffic, access control, firewall rules, VPN, threat protection, and reports of relevant events.

Its main advantages are the ease of creating and managing policies, integration with Sophos Central, advanced threat protection, navigation and application control, and the ability to quickly monitor access attempts, blocks, or suspicious behavior on the network.

Overall, it is a robust and reliable solution to protect the infrastructure, maintain control of the network perimeter, and respond better to security incidents.

**What do you dislike about Sophos Firewall?**

What I like least about Sophos Firewall is that some configuration options can be somewhat unintuitive at first, especially when managing rules, advanced policies, or specific reports. This can make certain tasks take longer than expected.

I also believe that the reports and dashboards could be more flexible and customizable, to facilitate quick analysis of events, blocked traffic, access attempts, or suspicious behavior.

Another point for improvement is that some integrations or advanced functions rely heavily on Sophos Central, which can increase the complexity of management and the total cost of the solution.

As an improvement, it would be useful to have a simpler interface for frequent tasks, better filters in reports, and a more guided experience for new administrators or small teams.

**What problems is Sophos Firewall solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Sophos Firewall helps us solve issues related to network perimeter protection, traffic control, VPN access management, and the detection of suspicious connection attempts. It used to be more complex to have a quick overview of what was happening on the network, especially in the face of security events, blockages, or unauthorized access.

With Sophos Firewall, we can manage rules, browsing policies, application control, VPN, and threat protection from an organized platform. This improves visibility, facilitates incident response, and allows for quicker decision-making when anomalous activity is detected.

The main benefit is having greater control and traceability over the network, reducing the time spent reviewing events and strengthening the overall security of the organization.

  ### 6. Sophos is Firewall Excellent Network Visibility and Control

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Omar S. | Admin IT, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** June 18, 2026

**What do you like best about Sophos Firewall?**

What I value most about Sophos Firewall is the visibility it gives us into network traffic, along with how easy it is to identify and control applications, users, and threats from a single management console. The web filtering and application control policies are straightforward to set up and manage, which helps us respond quickly to incidents while still maintaining a secure environment without significantly affecting user productivity.

**What do you dislike about Sophos Firewall?**

Although our overall experience with Sophos Firewall has been positive, there are still a few areas where it could be improved. Some advanced configurations take multiple steps and can feel overly complex for less experienced administrators. In addition, the reporting and analytics tools would benefit from more customization options and a more flexible way to present data.

We have also found that major updates require careful planning to reduce operational impact and maintain compatibility with existing configurations. In certain situations, troubleshooting more advanced issues may demand a deep technical understanding of the platform.

Even with these considerations, the advantages in security, visibility, and control clearly outweigh the limitations we’ve identified.

**What problems is Sophos Firewall solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Sophos Firewall helps us tackle several key security and network management challenges. It gives us clear, comprehensive visibility into network traffic, so we can identify applications, users, and potential threats in real time. With that insight, we’re able to make better-informed decisions, enforce security policies more consistently, and respond quickly when we see suspicious activity.

It also supports tighter control over web access, better management of application usage, and stronger protection against malware, ransomware, and other cyber threats. By bringing these capabilities together in a single platform, Sophos Firewall streamlines administration and reduces the complexity that often comes with managing network security.

  ### 7. Security Heartbeat Delivers Synchronized, Proactive Network Protection

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Saikiran B. | Security Analyst, Information Technology and Services, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**What do you like best about Sophos Firewall?**

The best thing about this is the synchronized security through Security Heartbeat. It’s really great that the firewall can communicate with devices on the network and immediately stop any device from causing further problems. This can happen before the person in charge even needs to take any action.

**What do you dislike about Sophos Firewall?**

The web interface can be really slow, and saving complex rules can take a long time. I also found it hard to learn how to use the web interface in the first place. Setting up configurations like NAT rules or custom VPN zoning isn’t easy, and you often have to jump through different menus to get it done. That extra navigation makes it harder to troubleshoot and fix problems in day-to-day use.

**What problems is Sophos Firewall solving and how is that benefiting you?**

It removes the race against time during an outbreak. Traditionally, manual network isolation takes too long, which gives threats time to move laterally. It also addresses the performance bottleneck that’s often associated with deep packet inspection on encrypted traffic.
