## SOLIDWORKS Reviews
  ### 1. Best CAD software

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Suraj B. | Design Engineer, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 20, 2022

**What do you like best about SOLIDWORKS?**

I am a certified Solidworks user; It's one of the easiest and most userfriendly CAD software to use. Solidworks makes many things easy as its widely used tranning videos are also avaliable on Youtube.

**What do you dislike about SOLIDWORKS?**

If you are using old verisions the constrains are in one place so its difficult to find the constrains. Apart from this rendering power is also littles less as compared to other sodtware.

**What problems is SOLIDWORKS solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Its best for sheet metal and part modeling; also, many standard features make it very easy to use. We primarily use it for sheet metal fabrication work and some engine components

  ### 2. King of 3D CAD. Widely used and has a very flat learning curve.

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Sanyog L. | M, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** July 21, 2021

**What do you like best about SOLIDWORKS?**

I've been using Solidworks for around five years now. It is an extremely powerful CAD parts and assembly design software mostly suited for Mechanical engineers, product engineers and industrial designers. It has a variety of modelling tools for hard surface modelling, and every one of them is very intuitive to use. It can handle large assemblies very well, has a very manageable feature tree which allows us to easily find and manipulate parts or components.
It has a very easy, guided interface, so essentially it doesn't require any tutorial after getting a slight grip on it. It can help design sheetmetals, weldments and mold and die tools very well. Solidworks comes with a package of other very useful tools for simulations , motion studies, animation, rendering, CAD documentation, PDM etc. It also supports Visual basic for applications and allows the user to use macros to automate their regular design tasks.

The best thing about Solidworks for me is its viewport. There are so many CAD softwares but how Solidworks lets you move the viewport around is so unique, and very effective for CAD modelling. It doesn't get long to get used to, but once you're used to it, it almost feels like you're manipulating the parts with your own hands.

**What do you dislike about SOLIDWORKS?**

I would not recommend Solidworks for surfacing tasks. Though it has many complex tools for surfacing, it isn't as effective as its hard surface modelling capabilities. Another recommendation for Solidworks is to incorporate node-based model augmentation, which would speed up the design process even more. Also, for parametrizing the parts from an external file, there are mainly two options, one with a text file and another with design tables within Excel. However, neither of them is easy to use and doesn't support two-way update capabilities. It would be great if there were a way to parametrize the parts using an external app of some sort. It can be done using Solidworks API; however, if Solidworks created something of that sort themselves, it would benefit us, users, immensely.

**Recommendations to others considering SOLIDWORKS:**

If you're considering purchasing a solid modeling tool, this will be your perfect choice. If you're searching for surface-intensive modeling, don't waste your time here. This is by far the best and the most widely used CAD software for small to medium-scale industries. You will benefit from this tool if you're from fields related to mechanical engineering, industrial engineering and product design .

**What problems is SOLIDWORKS solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I've been using Solidworks even since my university days. Solidworks team had generously provided us with 20 licenses for Solidworks premium for three consecutive years for our club named "Robotics Club". We used Solidworks to design and test our robots before fabricating them. The robots we built were taken to the ABU robocon competition.

Right now, professionally, I'm using Solidworks in the machinery industry to design automatic machines that build construction materials like brick and paving blocks. After I'm done with a rough conceptualization of my design, I model them in Solidworks, assemble the parts and visualize the feasibility of my design. I use motion studies to visualize how my parts will work under different conditions. When I'm done with the top layer design, I move on to the parts layer and redesign my parts for optimized material and manufacturing costs. For that I use Solidworks Simulation. After the whole design is complete, I use Solidworks visualize to render out my final design for presentation.

**What do you like best about SOLIDWORKS?**

UI design is leaps and bounds ahead of competitor software. When an issue does arise, the online help/forums for Solidworks are easy to use to find answers to solutions.

**What do you dislike about SOLIDWORKS?**

It can be hard to transition seasoned veterans of other CAD software into Solidworks. One of the main barriers is how some tools operate and naming conventions. Adding different UI options to adapt and act more like these other programs could help the transition period.

**Recommendations to others considering SOLIDWORKS:**

Try to recreate items you have already made in other programs in Solidworks. Not worrying about design-related decisions will allow the user to have a better experience learning the program.

**What problems is SOLIDWORKS solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Ease of use of the program allows for quick mockup of solutions, and when combined with 3d printing technology, it allows for rapid implementation of solutions to assembly issues.

  ### 5. Review for SoildWorks

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Mustafa M. | Graduate Assistant, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** July 09, 2021

**What do you like best about SOLIDWORKS?**

The ease of 3d modeling. Very user-friendly. The best feature is perhaps it comes up with also computational fluid dynamics modeling, which is really amazing!

**What do you dislike about SOLIDWORKS?**

The only thing I dislike about SolidWorks is that sometimes, it complains if there any error in your design or if you over-defined a dimension, however, the messages it gives are not always easy to interpret! This is especially true for someone who just started using it and can spend hours without sensing what truly causing the issues. The guide is useful in many cases, however, it is not always easy to find a very specific issue from a book with hundreds of pages. My suggestion to the SolidWorks community would be to focus on making video tutorials on specific topics or issues to make it easier.

**Recommendations to others considering SOLIDWORKS:**

For me, this the best available 3d tool, both for beginners and professionals. I would recommend trying to explore the wonderful features it has and utilize the power of computational fluid dynamics and sheet metals for new users.

**What problems is SOLIDWORKS solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I have previously used SolidWorks to design a 3d structure of a fire extinguishing robot, chassis of an automobile, etc. SolidWorks gives you a nice 3d impression before you actually built it! You can detail drawing with it, both 2d and 3d! All the built-in features make your life much easier compared to other software! You can use even mathematical equations to build models! Moreover, you can use different materials and do complex calculations!

**What do you like best about SOLIDWORKS?**

I am a mechanical engineer, and one of my duties is to deliver flawless designs for mechanical components. SolidWorks application made it simple and easy with a user-friendly interface and a lot of mechanical libraries such as screws, bolts, and holes, which made our lives as designers more enjoyable. It also gives the option to make simulations like fluid and static simulations. in short SolidWorks for designers and mechanical engineers is like Microsoft office to people.

**What do you dislike about SOLIDWORKS?**

what I really hate about the SolidWorks application is it casts a fortune, it is very expensive software. It also needs a PC with high specifications that also costs a lot>

**What problems is SOLIDWORKS solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I am a mechanical engineer, I use SolidWorks to make 3D models of mechanical components, besides I run a Mechanical simulation to get results for its behavior to external effects.

**Reviewed Date:** August 19, 2021

**What do you like best about SOLIDWORKS?**

Solidworks ability to display detailed 3D drawings is excellent.

**What do you dislike about SOLIDWORKS?**

The overall folder structure for Solidworks is frustrating. The files in an assembly pull from a specific folder, and if that folder is moved into another subfolder, the whole assembly could be in jeopardy. If there was an easier way to move and access assembly folders, I would have no issues.

**Recommendations to others considering SOLIDWORKS:**

Remember to be diligent about saving assembly files and naming folders properly.

**What problems is SOLIDWORKS solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Sharing design updates with clients has been fantastic with Solidworks

  ### 35. Haven't found something I couldn't do with it yet

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Higher Education | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** June 14, 2021

**What do you like best about SOLIDWORKS?**

I love the fact that, if you start learning to use the program, it is built in such a way that you constantly discover new features on your own. Basically, it is quite intuitive after you get properly started in using it.
I like the integration with other add-ons, like CAM, Simulation etc as these are accessible as tabs directly in the program. So I can start designing my part, run a quick simulation, make some changes, re-run the simulation and so on without switching between windows all the time.

**What do you dislike about SOLIDWORKS?**

The recovery system is pretty basic and unintuitive. Auto-recovered files can only be accessed when starting the program, when you can select which of the files to open. If you fail to select a file, you can no longer open it as it is deleted.

**Recommendations to others considering SOLIDWORKS:**

If you are now starting to learn CAD/CAM software in general, I believe Solidworks is a great choice. However, if you're trying to get employed, check what CAD/CAM software is most used in your industry/area and make your choice primarily based on that. It's not hard to switch (this also depends from one program to another), but if you chiise the right software from the start, you may have some benefits, like the ability to get a certification.
If Solidworks is the choice of software in your industry/area, getting a certification is a great way of getting noticed.

**What problems is SOLIDWORKS solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I have done all of my school and work design projects using Solidworks and never had any major issues.

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Om C. | Strategic Sourcing Analyst, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** May 27, 2021

**What do you like best about SOLIDWORKS?**

The main thing I like about Solidworks is the easy-to-use User Interface. It is undoubtedly one of the best 3D design modeling software out there. The commands are very easy to learn and navigate through. The only thing that can hold you back while using this software is your imagination, there almost nothing that you can't do with this software related to design and modeling. I also like the measuring tool where you can measure any dimension by just clicking on the edge line and it shows the measurement right away! I also love the configuration feature where you can create multiple dimensions in a single part. I will choose this software over any other CAD software, anyday.

**What do you dislike about SOLIDWORKS?**

There is very little to dislike about this software but one would be that it reloads too often and it is quite slow while handling large assemblies. There were a very few times that it crashed on me at very critical moments but I wouldn't worry about it much.

**Recommendations to others considering SOLIDWORKS:**

I would highly recommend Solidworks for someone who is new to design and modeling software. It would be very easy to communicate your issues with the Solidworks community and get the issue resolved at the earliest!

**What problems is SOLIDWORKS solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I have been using Solidworks for creating the parts of a support structure for a solar panel system and assembling it at the end.

  ### 48. Solidworks will more than likely do (mechanically) what you need it to

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Andrew M. | Mechanical Designer, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 12, 2015

**What do you like best about SOLIDWORKS?**

Ease of use and learning. Resources and amenability to self-training.
Basic versatility. Solidworks may not be the best for a particular mechanical design need, but you can probably figure it out and get it made with Solidworks.
3D sketching tools- You can establish reference points or model geometry with a 3D sketch, using many alignment tools geometric relationships, dimensions and splines. This can be done at the part, assembly and in assembly context levels.

The sheet metal tools are versatile, effective and not hard to get started with.

The live associative BOM. You can design an assembly with empty or placeholder descriptions and properties and push them to the part/assembly properties by entering them from the Bill of Materials in a drawing. This has it's dangers, but you have been warned.

Configurations: Not all 3D CAD packages (Inventor, to name one) (or CAD standards) allow trivial use of configurations to show/hide/suppress parts or features or to ease the design process, assembly management and variation of relevant dimensions. It can be pretty useful for the design and drawing processes.

Double click to edit a feature- it's really easy to access and change part parameters by double clicking on a parts surface. No poking around the feature tree for a sketch.

**What do you dislike about SOLIDWORKS?**

Solidworks is most stable working with all needed files on a local hard drive. If you have any files on remote drives, you will eventually have problems between nuisance popup boxes to lost work (between saves), nuisance crashes to corrupt work (ouch!).

Solidworks PDM and EPDM workgroup softwares mitigate but do not eliminate these problems

**Recommendations to others considering SOLIDWORKS:**

Good or better for almost anything mechanical (mechanical design and drafting. Niche or specialty needs may be better met by other programs.

**What problems is SOLIDWORKS solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Design of mechanical components, assemblies and systems

  ### 49. SolidWorks is Incredible!

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Chris R. | Engineer, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** August 31, 2021

**What do you like best about SOLIDWORKS?**

I have been an engineer for several decades now. SolidWorks is by far the most intuitive solid modeling software I've ever used.

**What do you dislike about SOLIDWORKS?**

SolidWorks software and support providers are essential for training and updates. However, Dassault Sytemes (owner of SolidWorks) is a very aggressive marketer. They regularly email advertisements and promotions.

**What problems is SOLIDWORKS solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We primarily use SolidWorks to unfold customer sheet metal designs, as well as create sheet metal designs in-house. Doing so with other CAD packages can be very time-consuming and error-prone. SolidWorks makes these tasks very easy and very fast. Errors are minimal.

  ### 50. SolidWorks is one stop solutions for all of your designing needs.

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Amit J. | Manufacturing Process Engineer, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** May 03, 2021

**What do you like best about SOLIDWORKS?**

Solidworks is best for 3d modeling and simulation of the assemblies. Solidworks has fine User Interface and clean ui. It is very easy to find any commands in solidwoks whichever version you are using. You cal open same files on all the version of the solidedge. You can create assembly and by giving desired motion you can check any error or stresses in parts. It is very easy to use. You can also produce step file which will be opened in another design software. This gives you much freedom. It has one of the best designing command for welding which other software not have.

**What do you dislike about SOLIDWORKS?**

Couldn't find any problem using this software. But it doesn't have synchronous method like solid edge. You can't make 2d drafts file as good as Autocad in solidworks if you want 2d then first you have make 3d and then convert it into 2d. Price of Solidworks is also higher and it also charges for maintenance.

**Recommendations to others considering SOLIDWORKS:**

Please make this software affordable and give it free to students.

**What problems is SOLIDWORKS solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We are using this for creating assembly of final product and analysis of stress. This software is also useful in design of Tools, jig, fixtures etc.
