It have everything that you would need to describe your subnets. You can add VLAN information, descriptions and I just took another look at it. WOW! I didn't know you could look at it from a chart view. It was kinda difficult to understand what I was seeing the first time I used it. I didn't really like it much but as I used it more and more, the easier it was to read and to fill out that it became indispensable. It seems complicated but really it isn't. Pingdom allows us to easily see crucial metrics like downtime and uptime at a glance while also allowing us to dig deeper into a situation to identify any issues. We also have alerts set up so that way if there are any issues while we are not in the office, we will be made aware of any potential issues. We also use the page speed management tools in order to help track the impact of new code deployments. **What do you dislike about SolarWinds Observability?** One of the biggest issues we have seen with Pingdom is the difference in reports from their free web tool for testing site speed and the paid tool that can be found within the app for monitoring site speed over time. We have found that the free web tool is more accurate than the paid monitoring tool when determining site speed. We do not exactly know why Pingdom is showing such different results, but we have consistently seen a difference. **What problems is SolarWinds Observability solving and how is that benefiting you?** We are currently using Pingdom to try to effectively track important website performance metrics. Their reports allow us to easily see changes and impacts. We also use Pingdom to track any downtime issues we may experience while we are out of the office through various alerts. ### 16. Other packages are either difficult to administer and/or difficult for non-techie end-users to interface with. Solarwinds is easy to use, and easy to administer. It's also very quick to get up and running and at least somewhat productive. It is very extensible and customizable, which once you start working with this will make you even more productive. The other modules that are offered, such as NCM, NTA UDT and IPAM, are great too. And this is just on the networking side, they have extensive server/storage/database monitoring also. **What do you dislike about SolarWinds Observability?** Lack of granular controls on administrative privileges. The inability to merge the data from an old device to a new one that replaces it, such as bandwidth statistics. **Recommendations to others considering SolarWinds Observability:** Get a demo. Be active on Thwack.com, their user community. **What problems is SolarWinds Observability solving and how is that benefiting you?** Solarwinds NPM makes it easy for Network Engineers to monitor many aspects of their network devices. This information is easily accessed by them in order to help diagnose issues, forecast capacity and many other things. More importantly the user-friendly UI makes it simple for managers and others to get in and check things out or create reports for metrics. The UI is easily customizable to facilitate different audiences using it, such as managers or NOCs. Its also very extensible to be able to draw out information important to your organization. I like that there are many ways to search for a device (device number, user logged into it, time, date, etc), which makes it quick and easy to identify users having problems. It might be helpful to setup up user profiles to match to machines to monitor usage by user name rather than machine name. It'd work great if those templates work out-of-the-box for you. Good integration with the core SolarWinds Orion product. **What do you dislike about SolarWinds Observability?** I'm still waiting for SolarWinds to improve their Linux support after 5 years of using their Orion Network Performance Monitor (NPM) + Server & Application Monitor (SAM). One of their newer SAM features, Application Dependency Mapping, which automatically figures out which app is talking to which on your network, only works between Windows clients/VMs and not Linux ones Many of the SAM Application Monitor Templates, especially those contributed by their user community, are outdated and need manual adjustments before they can be applied to the versions of software application we have deployed. For example, for some templates that monitor Windows processes, the Windows process names have changed and I need to manually update them before the templates can be used. As of the time of writing, there're 279 application templates provided by SolarWinds and 1000 templates shared by their user community (some with duplicated functions). Most of these are for the Windows platform. It isn't difficult to build your own monitors, but it's a lot of work to do this one metric at a time! While SAM is integrated with Orion NPM onto the same web GUI, I haven't found a way to merge data between the two products together, or even just combine two SAM monitors, to produce one chart/report. For example, I've a file size monitor on a log file, but there's no way to put this log file size growth over time chart with, say, server request per second, or with CPU usage. This severely limits the usefulness of the charts/reports. Worse is the fact that the reporting engine is shared with Orion. They hard-code PDF reports to A4 paper size for no reason, with no way of changing it to Letter/Legal size. And the so-called web email report option results in a mht file attachment in an *empty* email, instead of a real HTML email like those sent out by their marketing team. I can log both my development and live servers to the same system and either join or separate their content at will. The existing collection tools for Loggly are very strong and the setup for those tools is incredibly easy. Beyond that they offer the necessary endpoints and formats to receive logs from a wide variety of candidates. Everything from system logs on various servers to application and routing logs from custom solutions is available. Loggly essentially runs an Elastic Stack on behalf of the user, and having set up some similar solutions to test, I can declare with confidence that the time and energy saved by *not* rolling my own logging solution(and thereby having to maintain my maintenance tools) is beyond measure. Support is quick and helpful within reason, I've had nothing resembling a technical difficult caused by failure on Loggly's part. **What do you dislike about SolarWinds Observability?** Cos:, While I think the price is reasonable for the amount of work saved, and at $99 a month it pays for itself immediately, placing things like the LiveTail feature(emulating tail -f) at a $250 a month price point is disappointing. Features like that are excellent at every level and I'm simply never gonna convince my superiors to spend more on our log solution than on the live servers it monitors. Finicky: It's a pain to get your log data arranged so that the various features of the system come into play correctly. I still periodically get unparsed log entries because 2 consecutive log entries had different object signatures for the same field(including single objects vs arrays). Query Language: There are a few ways to filter/limit data for display and analysis with Loggly, but sometimes things don't work like you think they will and it's not always clear why. Somtimes a query for field:'2' finds objects with field=2, but sometimes it finds nothing whatsoever. When this happens there's always doubt as to whether you structured your query wrong or if there's literally no data meeting the criteria to be found. **Recommendations to others considering SolarWinds Observability:** Look at their integrations, determine if you can use their tools to build the sort of structure you need. Spend some real dev time reducing log noise(we ran a search for "console.log" and removed all of them, then went back and started adding calls to our logger explicitly and carefully) and building in the necessary components to standardize the log entry process. Look into Fluentd, it's excellent for routing, filtering and translating logs, it can help as an adapter to make sure Loggly gets what it needs from where it needs. **What problems is SolarWinds Observability solving and how is that benefiting you?** Logs for server-side code are a right pain. Parsing and analyzing logs from a cluster of containers all outputting logs directly to console.log is a nightmare. Simply put Loggly offers a robust system with simple inputs that allows you to funnel log data to a common, web-accessible location where it can be stored and interacted with in a number of robust ways. Before Loggly our hands were often tied if a user complaint fell into server code, there was simply not an easy way to parse logs from several servers, some of which may have been drained and terminated, and meaningfully determine what was going on. Loggly gave me the ability to search and sort log data to find the source of problems. Within a week of completing our integration of Loggly we were discovering the source and profile of bugs that had eluded us for 6 months. With further adaptation of our web app to the new logging approach, we can start to see traffic patterns and analyse user behavior from the logs as well. Lastly, Loggly prevents us from taking on a new maintenance and development project in order to analyze our main maintenance and development project. Loggly lets us break the potentially infinite chain of working on tools to work on tools. ### 37.
