Inexpensive and immediate. FreePoint's ShiftWorx is a great product to get started with an IOT project. They provide a small device that connects directly to your machines that monitor whether the machine is operating or down. The device will seamlessly communicate to an azure cloud every millisecond and provide real-time visibility and performance to the operator. Most shops will have this on dashboard monitors or cell phones. ShiftWorx does have API's but no out of the box integration to any of the major ERP platforms on the market. It only captures up time and down time.
