
Proxmox delivers zero-compromise enterprise features without pushing me into predatory licensing gymnastics. Its dual-architecture approach—running heavy-duty KVM virtual machines side by side with ultra-lightweight LXC containers on the same host—is a masterclass in resource efficiency.
The platform has matured a lot in recent updates. The native Software-Defined Networking (SDN) layer makes it straightforward to build more complex network fabrics, and the addition of the Cluster Resource Scheduler (CRS) for automated, dynamic load balancing is a real shift for high-availability clusters. It monitors node stress in real time and live-migrates guests on its own to keep the environment stable.
On top of that, passing high-end enterprise GPUs directly through to a VM for local AI/LLM workloads has been flawless for me, and the performance is excellent. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
While I really like the responsive, server-rendered web GUI, the UX clearly prioritizes function over form and has a distinct “engineer aesthetic.” As your cluster scales out, keeping track of deeply nested resource pools can start to feel cluttered and harder to scan.
The onboarding and ongoing maintenance curve is also a bit of a double-edged sword. A basic bare-metal installation can take less than 20 minutes, but troubleshooting more advanced network bridges or recovering a degraded ZFS array often means diving deep into the Debian CLI.
Finally, in stricter enterprise environments, enterprise support is very responsive but fully ticket-based—there’s no 24/7 emergency phone line like you’d get with legacy proprietary hypervisors. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
