What do you like best about PowerBI Portal?

The Power BI Portal provides a centralized hub for sharing and consuming reports across the organization, making it easy for business users to access dashboards without needing desktop installations. The web based experience with automatic refresh scheduling, row-level security, and workspace-based governance makes it straightforward to manage report distribution at scale. What do you dislike about PowerBI Portal?

Performance can be inconsistent when dealing with large datasets or complex DAX measures, especially on shared capacity where query times spike during peak hours. The workspace permission model, while functional, can get confusing when managing access across multiple workspaces with different sensitivity levels the admin experience could be more intuitive. Additionally, the portal's limited support for version control and collaborative development (compared to tools like Git-integrated PBIP workflows) makes it harder for teams to track changes and manage report deployments in a structured CI/CD pipeline. What problems is PowerBI Portal solving and how is that benefiting you?

Power BI Portal solves the challenge of democratizing data access across the organization. Previously, business stakeholders relied on ad-hoc email reports or static spreadsheets that were outdated by the time they reached decision-makers. With the portal, teams across finance, manufacturing, supply chain, and procurement can access live, interactive dashboards like Plant Maintenance metrics, Cash Positions, and Global Procurement Intelligence all from a single browser without needing specialized tools or database access.

It also addresses the governance and security problem. By centralizing reports in workspaces with row-level security and defined access controls, we ensure sensitive data like cost centers, vendor details, and financial figures are only visible to authorized users. This eliminates the risk of uncontrolled spreadsheet sharing while maintaining a single source of truth that everyone trusts.

The biggest operational benefit is the reduction in reporting turnaround time. What used to take days of manual data extraction and Excel manipulation now happens automatically through scheduled refreshes connected to our Databricks lakehouse. Business users get self-service access to drill into KPIs like work order backlog, PM06 compliance rates, and notification trends without waiting for the data team to pull custom reports freeing up engineering capacity for building new pipelines instead of servicing report requests.
