For advanced users, customization options might be satisfying but especially for teachers with limited IT experiences might get lots between options and configurations. Performance can also be a difficulty for huge systems after a while because Moodle is not providing any optimization tools for it's own database. Administrators of huge systems should consider using 3rd party database customization tools for Moodle database. **Recommendations to others considering Moodle:** Moodle is one of the best options if you are planning to setup a LMS but definetely you should employ a system administrator for setup. Setup process is not easy and lots of configurations needs to be done. **What problems is Moodle solving and how is that benefiting you?** We have been using Moodle for 6 years and at the moment 30.000 students are enrolled in our courses. With the help of Moodle it's easy to publish lecture videos, presentations and documents. Students can contact with each others at discussion forums in Moodle. The visual layout of sites is appealing and can be formatted in a variety of different ways which allows you to personalize the site to meet the needs of any class and/or group. **What do you dislike about Moodle?** At my institution the format for Moodle changes each year so it is not possible to re-use a lot of material from the previous year. Rather, everything has to be re-entered and formatted somewhat. Editing Moodle is tedious and often particularly frustrating, and there just has to be an easier way to make editing a more streamlined process. **What problems is Moodle solving and how is that benefiting you?** I use Moodle to communicate through the messenger functions, share course information, participate in forum discussions, and upload assignments. It's modular, powerful and logically structure. It allows fine grained control over pretty much everything you can think of (including backend admin and developer portions), and is built to be expandable. **What do you dislike about Moodle?** Being built on PHP, I question how scalable it actually is for many concurrent users. Based on my experience, it doesn't seem to run crazy fast, and may require a server with pretty hefty resources to run quickly and well. The software is based on PHP and mySQL so there are many free plug ins that add features and functionality to the LMS. **What do you dislike about Moodle?** Moodle has a steep learning curve and it can be difficult for a newby to deal with. Very slowly but surely, moodle is becoming more user friendly. You will find yourself depending on YouTube and the kindness of strangers when you start out. **Recommendations to others considering Moodle:** Work with a good hosting company that is familar with moodle, they can help you with the setup. If you are not a hands on computer person, consider a moodle provider. This will cost you, but may be better. If you are going to host moodle yourself, make sure you have committed support from your IT dept. and the services of a knowledgeable linux person. Therefore I had to set up a learning environment, that could train the trainers and users on a specific speech recognition software. Many of my colleagues have courses structured in a variety of ways. I typically use a weekly approach, with subcategories (divided by labels). I've also used a topic-approach for courses with a non-linear structure. Some of my colleagues have heavily used folders for organizing information, others have done interesting things with the layout of the first few categories to create obvious links to the most important resources. For my classes, I heavily utilize the quizzes and gradebook. Moodle serves as my primary gradebook, communication method to the class, and course organizer. I frequently post information as Moodle Pages, but I also post many files and links to YouTube videos and other resources. It works very well for all of these purposes. **What do you dislike about Moodle?** I've had some issues, such as students vanishing or Moodle going offline for the entire campus. This is due to our campus-level administration of Moodle and who we contract our servers with. There are some features that are implemented (or not) at the administrative level. I love that there are many add-ons/plug-ins that have been developed, but if I want to use them, I have to have them installed by the administrator. This limits the functionality of Moodle. **Recommendations to others considering Moodle:** Make sure that whoever is your administrator for the Moodle system communicates directly with the users (faculty). Many features are available, but the administrator will need to install plug-ins that will affect all users. **What problems is Moodle solving and how is that benefiting you?** It is valuable for students to have one tool for all of their coursework: grades, assignments, communication. This works best when students are consistently logging in, seeing when they have new messages and what upcoming events are on their calendar. I'm one of the heavier users of Moodle on my campus, so it takes some time for students to get used to being on Moodle almost every day. I particularly like that I can see logs of when students were on and what they were doing; this typically correlates with performance in the course. Students see their grades, in real time, at the same place I see them. While I do need to spend lots of time updating Moodle, this time has decreased as I've found a course structure that works for me. It significantly decreases the number of e-mails I get from students asking about their grade, deadlines, and assignments. ### 19. The platform is robust and mature with some excellent plugins including Office365 authentication, instructor led class bookings, a powerful database builder with notifications (used for online custom course bookings) and a rich custom SQL reporting tool. Once you know your way around the administration tools the Learning Management System is quick to maintain and quite easy to extend with a little custom PHP or MySQL databases using Dreamweaver and Navicat. **What do you dislike about Moodle?** Despite the Report plugin reporting can be tricky and the underlying database is not documented very well with the database schema complex and hard to follow. The software developers release updates very often, almost once a month it seems and you have to keep it current otherwise you can run into problems when upgrading over a few versions (and you cannot let the installed version grow too stale without running into browser compatibility issues and security problems). Although Moodle has lots of themes and plugins available, many of them cause problems when not supported in updated versions of Moodle so its not worth using them with a PHO developer to hand. It can be hard to get away from slightly cheesy Moodle look with extensive CSS code and tweaking. **Recommendations to others considering Moodle:** 1. Determine what reporting you need, what are the KPI's and groups of users to be reported on. 2. If you will self host you will need basic html, web server, MySQL and PHP skills, not too advanced but a little. 3. TSOhost.co.uk provide very good cheap hosting for Moodle sites, and have great support but you need no. 2. 4. Don't get too carried away with custom themes, often they are buggy and are not supported with upgrades. 5. Think through how you be authenticating users, how will they sign up? 6. Be wary of allowing just anyone to create accounts. 7. For public sites plan on frequent upgrading for security, so limit PHP customisations to avoid future bugs. 8. Others may disagree but the best and most robust platform is Linux, Apache, MySQL and PHP. 9. Whilst the Moodle Books and Lessons are ok for e-learning they lack interactivity and can look unprofessional. 10. Use Captivate or Storyline to author content rich trackable SCORM e-learning on Moodle course pages. **What problems is Moodle solving and how is that benefiting you?** Whilst Moodle is aimed at educational use, it is a very good LMS for business applications. I have deployed it to: Securely authenticate users to Instructor led course pages with PDF manuals for download and certificates available for each course (e.g. Word Excel etc) and well as provide an interface to a course schedule database. Provide SCROM training needs analysis e-learning and content for end users. Deploy public e-learning to a secure group of client users authenticated by email domain suffix with certification exams and certificates all essentially automated. Host internal staff e-learning and content for both technical and soft skill training. Offer a dedicated staff candidate portal with competency tests from pools of questions, CV upload and interviewee notes on each candidate. The essential business problem is how to provide online content securely with interactions that can be tracked. The Moodle benefits are flexibility, relatively low costs, ease of use, rich support forum and wide user base. The aspect to bear in mind is that PHP/MYSQL developers can be sourced and assist with custom development if needed. ### 20. This coupled with the fact that it can store grades and links allows classes to have all their resources in one single class webpage. I have taken an entire course where everything I needed was on the one webpage, which allows ease of access. Grades and quizzes are very easy to view and complete. **What do you dislike about Moodle?** Perhaps this may pertain to just the course, but every discussion post in Moodle linked to my e-mail and basically spammed it. The colors and presentation of the site could also use a little bit of work, as it is very dull and one color-ish (greyish). But, I am using Moodle to learn, not analyze its artistic values. Also, it seems my class info/links are arranged by date. This is useful for courses that teach through weeks as I just scroll to any week to find certain course material. **Recommendations to others considering Moodle:** If you have used other educational sites that universities use, then Moodle is pretty much like no other. The outline of the website may be different at first, but it is guaranteed you will learn how it works within an hour. **What problems is Moodle solving and how is that benefiting you?** I use this for educational purposes. The benefits of Moodle come from the fact that many classes utilize it, allowing a student to fully have all class information on hand. I know my brother has used it for school projects, and he had a great experience with the product. I really like the communication it provides between all members of a learning environment. I respect the way that the Moodle community reached out to attract product users such as myself. I did not feel like I was being bothered or anything. **What do you dislike about Moodle?** I am not sure how to use all of the features, and it is not clear what features Moodle offers. I am not entirely sure what I am supposed to do when I get Moodle, and what it will help me with. In order to find out if it was really easy to use, I think I would have to test it out myself. I think it is hard to say something is easy to use when you first start using it. I will have to give it more time. I end up using generic resources to solve my issues, then instruct MY SUPPORT TEAM on how to solve the problem for me at an administrative level.
