What do you like best about Microsoft SQL Server?

Reliable; relatively easy to administer; huge amount of paid and free books, videos, blogs, forums, third-party products available; actively being improved by Microsoft. I would say the ecosystem around SQL Server is second to none. It is supported by many vendors of other products. In decades of part-time use I have found almost no bugs in the product. I also like Microsoft's recent effort to port SQL Server to Linux. Azure opens more possibilities. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Microsoft SQL Server?

It can be pricey; and small parts of the ISO standard are still not implemented (for example, date intervals). Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Recommendations to others considering Microsoft SQL Server:

Consider your resources. SQL Server costs more money than open source software such as MySQL or PostgreSQL (unless your data can fit into the free edition). But in my opinion SQL Server can take less time and labor than the open source alternatives. So it depends on what is your scarce resource.

Also consider whether a you need a traditional relational database like SQL Server, or some type of NoSQL non-relational database, or some combination. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is Microsoft SQL Server solving and how is that benefiting you?

It is hard to imagine a modern business that does not use some kind of database. We use it for accounting, sales, manufacturing (including factory automation), bug tracking, and I am sure I am forgetting things. We've benefited from the product's reliability, and especially from the thriving third-party ecosystem that usually allows us to either build or buy functionality as we choose.
