"Power11 delivered cyber-resilient consolidation for IBM i and AIX estates"

What do you like best about IBM Power Servers?

The IBM Power line - and Power11 specifically as the current generation - delivers transactional density per core that is genuinely a step beyond Power9, letting us consolidate mixed IBM i + AIX workloads onto fewer LPARs and reduce licensing footprint. PowerVM remains the most mature enterprise hypervisor we work with: live partition mobility, dynamic LPAR resizing and shared processor pools all behave predictably under real production pressure. iASP combined with PowerHA SystemMirror cross-site Active-Active configurations are simpler to design now thanks to Policy-Based HA semantics in Storage Virtualize. Integration with IBM Storage Insights Pro AI-driven ransomware threat detection (via the FlashSystem layer) has surfaced validated early indicators on real customer estates. The on-chip MMA acceleration on Power11 is starting to pay back for AI inference workloads on AIX. Backward compatibility with Power9/Power10 LPAR images during phased refresh was clean - no surprises during cutover. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about IBM Power Servers?

Entry-level configurations on Power S1122 are competitively priced, but mid-range setups climb quickly when NVMe internal storage and PowerVM Enterprise features are added - total cost of ownership conversations with smaller customers still require careful framing. Documentation around Power11-specific tuning for newer SAP HANA workloads on Linux on Power is still maturing; we leaned on IBM Lab Services for at least one design call to de-risk a HANA migration. HMC virtual appliance V11 is a step forward, but the upgrade path from physical HMC 7063-CR2 estates was not as seamless as we hoped - we ran a few extra co-existence windows during transition. Skill availability on the broader market is a real constraint: hiring engineers with hands-on Power experience is harder than for x86 platforms - not a product flaw, but a structural risk for prospective customers planning long-term operations on this platform. What problems is IBM Power Servers solving and how is that benefiting you?

We deploy and operate IBM Power servers (with Power11 as the current generation refresh target) across multiple Italian customer environments under managed-services contracts. Three representative scenarios:

(1) A pharmaceutical distribution cooperative running cross-site active-active IBM i with Policy-Based Replication - Power11 delivered the headroom and security primitives needed to consolidate from a Power9 estate while introducing AI-driven ransomware threat detection at the storage layer.

(2) A 24/7 distribution and logistics platform consolidated onto Power11 + FlashSystem 5300 with PowerHA SystemMirror for i and Safeguarded Copy as logical air-gap - the platform handles peak weekend logistics windows without the performance degradation we used to see on the legacy Power9 estate.

(3) An NIS2-aligned DRaaS for an industrial manufacturer, where Power11 is hosted in our own shared data center and replicated asynchronously to the customer site via Quick-EDD - Power11 made it economically viable to standardize the partner-hosted DR offering across multiple smaller manufacturing customers.

The business benefits we measure across these estates: approximately 30% reduction in physical core footprint after consolidation; meaningful improvement in RPO/RTO consistency under stress; and a defensible cyber-resilience posture for NIS2 readiness conversations with customer CIOs and CISOs.
