What do you like best about IBM CICS Transaction Server?

What stands out most about CICS Transaction Server is its rock-solid reliability under heavy transaction loads. We run high-volume workloads through it every day, and it consistently gets us through peak periods without downtime, which is essential for our business-critical applications. Backward compatibility is another major advantage—we’ve been able to keep long-standing COBOL applications running smoothly while still integrating with newer tools. The performance monitoring and diagnostic capabilities also help us spot issues early, before they impact end users, and they’ve saved our team a lot of time during troubleshooting. What do you dislike about IBM CICS Transaction Server?

The learning curve for CICS Transaction Server is quite steep, particularly for team members without a mainframe or COBOL background, so onboarding new developers tends to take longer than we’d like. The user interface and tooling also feel dated compared with more modern application platforms. While the documentation is thorough, it isn’t always easy to navigate when we’re trying to troubleshoot a specific issue. Licensing costs are another factor to weigh, especially as we scale usage across a higher volume of transactions. What problems is IBM CICS Transaction Server solving and how is that benefiting you?

CICS Transaction Server meets our need for reliable, high-throughput transaction processing at enterprise scale. It supports our core business transactions—the kind that can’t afford downtime or data inconsistency—and gives us confidence that, even during peak load, everything is processed correctly and quickly. It also allows us to keep leveraging decades of investment in existing COBOL applications instead of rewriting everything from scratch, which saves significant time and cost. For us, the biggest benefit has been operational stability: fewer outages, predictable performance, and the ability to scale transaction volume without a corresponding spike in issues.
