**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Pranav R. | CEO / Founder, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 12, 2023

**What do you like best about Google Cloud Data Catalog?**

This a good feature because it allows for better organization and management of resources within a Google Cloud environment. It allows specific users or groups of users to be given access to search and tag resources, which can improve collaboration and access to important data.

**What do you dislike about Google Cloud Data Catalog?**

I don't have any complaints with it. But the UI for interacting with IAM roles and what not could be improved. GCP generally doesn't seem to be that great in the UI/UX department - but that could be said about a lot of products.

**What problems is Google Cloud Data Catalog solving and how is that benefiting you?**

It helped us, particularly in these areas:

Improved Data Discovery: With Data Catalog, users can search for and discover data across their organization, even if it is stored in different places. This can save time and improve collaboration as users can find the data they need more easily.

Better Data Governance: Data Catalog allows users to tag and annotate data, making it easier to understand and manage. This can help with compliance and regulatory requirements, as well as improve overall data quality.

  ### 27. Highly Scale able Data Assets Metadata Management Tool

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Faisal A. | Systems Analyst, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** July 24, 2020

**What do you like best about Google Cloud Data Catalog?**

I can search any kind of data assets like datasets, tables, files etc. on GCP since its a central managed service. Its easy to create tag templates which can be attached to tables and columns with mandatory and optional information. Data Catalog existing dashboard shows us the highly used tables and views.

**What do you dislike about Google Cloud Data Catalog?**

Right now, i cannot manipulate or add new cards to the Data Catalog dashboard. There are limited options right now to maintain tags where we could define complex long calculations. It does not support out of box integration with outer world so we cannot cover complete universe of data assets we have.

**What problems is Google Cloud Data Catalog solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We are maintaining metadata information about our tables and views by attaching tags to them. We also know that how many records are in the source system and how many have been transferred to different target tables in BigQuery on GCP. We are also maintaining business glossary that by describing fields in business terms. So that knowledge stays with the company and if any new joiner arrives wont have difficulty to understand business terms used in the company.

  ### 28. Google Cloud Data Catalog is a fully managed and scalable metadata management service that allows you to discover, manage, and understand your data assets. It provides a unified view of your data across various Google Cloud services, making it easier to organize and search for data. Users appreciate its integration with other Google Cloud services, ease of use, and the ability to create custom tags and metadata. However, some users have noted that it could benefit from more advanced features and better integration with non-Google Cloud data sources. Overall, it is considered a valuable tool for organizations looking to improve their data governance and management practices.

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Miguel Angel C. | Data Engineer, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 28, 2019

**What do you like best about Google Cloud Data Catalog?**

Data catalog is a tool for data management managed by metadata. The best thing about a data catalog is that it allows you to create custom templates. You can apply one or several templates to tables at the table or column level, and you can also apply metadata to other types of structured data.

**What do you dislike about Google Cloud Data Catalog?**

One of the main limitations of a data catalog as a complete big data solution is that it currently does not support unstructured data like Cloud storage.

**Recommendations to others considering Google Cloud Data Catalog:**

The API is very powerful, I recommend using it to utilize the Data Catalog in a more comprehensive way. It also complements programming languages like Python very well. I suggest reviewing the documentation because there are many ways to search, such as by tag or by type of objects.

**What problems is Google Cloud Data Catalog solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We are currently developing a data governance solution, managing permissions and access through data catalog metadata, as it allows you to build an intermediate layer between Google infrastructure and hosted data with the help of its metadata.
