## GIMP Reviews
  ### 1. Practical, Flexible Editing Tool for image editing and content creation

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Ishan S. | Manager and Dietician at Chaitanya Homoeo Clinic, Medical Store Owner, Content Creator, Hospital & Health Care, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** May 05, 2026

**What do you like best about GIMP?**

I work as a Dietician & Nutritionist, Manage a homeopathy clinic, and also create health education content, so I regularly need image editing for diet charts, before and after transformation posts, educational graphics, thumbnails, and social media content. what I like most about GIMP is that it provides many useful editing tools in one place and feels practical for daily use. In the beginning, it was not very easy to understand, but after regular use it became comfortable and now I can handle most editing work without much difficulty.

I use it frequently for creating before and after weight transformation posts, adding weight details, editing thumbnails, adding text on images, and preparing simple educational visuals for social media. Features like crop, resize, text tool, layer editing, and brightness adjustment are especially useful in my daily work. While editing transformation posts, the layer feature helps a lot because it allows me to manage before and after images, text, and highlights separately without affecting the full design. Background cleaning and color adjustment also help make posts look clearer and more professional.

performance is good for normal editing work, and the desktop version runs smoothly in my experience even while working on multiple images. The number of features is enough for image editing, thumbnails, posters, and social media content without feeling overly complicated. It also supports different image formats, so working with files from other tools becomes easy and fits well into my daily workflow. Overall, it feels practical, flexible, and very useful for daily health content, clinic-related work, and social media editing..

**What do you dislike about GIMP?**

In the beginning, interface feels little confusing because there are many tools and options on screen, so it takes some time to understand where things are. Sometimes while working on bigger images or multiple layers, performance can feel little slow on normal system, specially when many edits are open together. It is not a major problem but happens sometimes during longer editing work. Another small thing is that some advanced editing steps are not very easy for beginners and I had to watch few tutorials to understand them properly.

**What problems is GIMP solving and how is that benefiting you?**

It helps me solve the problem of basic to medium level image editing without needing very expensive software. In my daily work I need to create health education posts, edit thumbnails, make before and after transformation images and prepare visuals for social media, so it helps me manage all this work in one place. earlier, small editing tasks like adding text, resizing images, cleaning background or adjusting brightness were taking more time because I had to use different tools. Now most of these things can be done in one software, which makes work more easy and organized.
it also helps in making transformation posts more clear and professional. I can properly arrange before and after images, add weight details and highlight important points so the content looks more understandable for viewers. Layer editing, crop, resize and text tools are very useful in daily work. It also supports different image formats, so sharing and reusing files becomes simple. overall, it saves time, improves content quality and helps me create better educational and social media content in a more practical way.

  ### 2. GIMP: open source, excellent but not for professional editing

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Fabrizio M. | OPERATORE ANTINCENDIO - OSPEDALE PEDIATRICO BAMBINO GESù, Hospital & Health Care, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** May 03, 2026

**What do you like best about GIMP?**

I really like using GIMP; I've been using it since the days of Windows 8, and it was already one of the most well-known and highly rated editing programs. The interface is very nice and full of features. What I really liked is that it's an open-source program, so it doesn't require trial periods. I use it both for work and for personal projects like small banners. It's very practical and intuitive, and you get great results with GIMP.

**What do you dislike about GIMP?**

What I liked least about GIMP is the fact that for installation, going to the official website, it doesn't give you the option to start the download directly from their website. That is, if for convenience I want to start the download of the .exe file directly from the website, I am forced to go through the Microsoft store for the software installation, which is very annoying. Moreover, many times when I am making important modifications to a photo that should then be brought as a draft into a program to be processed, it comes up with "not responding" and the program crashes while I'm editing important files. However, it does this with photos that weigh several MB, which needs to be resolved.

**What problems is GIMP solving and how is that benefiting you?**

In the company, they make us use GIMP only to make changes to the hospital floor plans for which I work, and it gives me many advantages, including the fact that since the image I edit with GIMP has to be done well, without errors, sometimes it totally simplifies my work. When I have to make (important) changes to a photo, it has to be done well, and GIMP successfully edits every file I have given it. The PDF opening function is very useful.

  ### 3. Easy-to-Use, Free Image Editing with Fast Support and AI Background Removal

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Kevin K. | Pastor, Information Technology and Services, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** April 27, 2026

**What do you like best about GIMP?**

I like Gimp for it's easy use of navigating toolbar. It integrates smoothly with n8n, hubspot, lovable and social media platforms. It out performs adobe inscape as a free product and it costs nothing to create and edit images. Support is amaing and fast issues get solved quickly and smoothly. Gimp also features ai plugin capabilities to easily remove backgrounds from any image.

**What do you dislike about GIMP?**

Gimp can't always convert all images and sometimes leaves them in greyscale so even if you layer the image the layers then inherits the image layout.

**What problems is GIMP solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Gimp is a free open source image editing platform and it helps me create amaing content for social media absolutely free. No monthly cost. For a startup this is the best thing since sliced bread.

  ### 4. Free, Flexible, and Perfect for Quick Edits

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Claire M. | Creative lead, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** April 28, 2026

**What do you like best about GIMP?**

I like that GIMP is free, flexible, and still offers powerful editing tools like layers, selections, and export options that make everyday tasks quick and easy. Layers make it easy to edit without damaging the original image, selection tools help me quickly target specific areas, and export options make it fast to save assets in the right format for different sizes and channels. It's very easy and quick to set up, and although it took a little time to get used to the interface and customize it for my workflow, it was nothing more than any other software.

**What do you dislike about GIMP?**

The interface can feel a bit unintuitive and less modern and some workflows aren't as streamlined as other design tools which can slow things down at times. A more modern intuitive interface and better organization of tools would improve usability. Streamlining workflows and making shortcuts more consistent with other design tools would also make it easier and faster to use.

**What problems is GIMP solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I use GIMP to quickly edit, resize, and optimize assets without heavier tools, saving time and keeping projects moving. It's free, flexible, and offers powerful tools like layers, selections, and export options, making everyday tasks quick and easy.

  ### 5. Powerful Photoshop Alternative with Room for GPU Optimization

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** James H. | Desktop Support Specialist, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** April 22, 2026

**What do you like best about GIMP?**

I use GIMP for photo editing as a replacement for Adobe Photoshop, and it's been great since I used to work with Photoshop 7. I appreciate GIMP's simple and intuitive interface, which doesn't force unnecessary AI things like Photoshop does. I find the layering feature to be just as good, if not better than Photoshop's, allowing me to control opacity, apply gradients, and add effects that give my work depth and dimension. The ability to place a solid-color background layer and apply effects like gradients is particularly useful for creating subtle fades or blended looks.

**What do you dislike about GIMP?**

Photoshop is better optimized for GPU multithreading and battery optimization, that's probably the biggest area that GIMP could stand to grow in. I think GIMP could benefit from deeper GEGL multithreading, modern GPU APIs like Vulkan, and smarter power-management for laptops.

**What problems is GIMP solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I find GIMP's interface simple and intuitive, without unnecessary AI features. The layering feature is excellent, allowing control over opacity, gradients, and effects, adding depth and dimension to my work. It's been my go-to over Adobe Photoshop for efficient photo editing.

  ### 6. Powerful, Pro-Level Editing in GIMP—Free and Open Source

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Aneurys Nicanor A. | Project Manager, Civil Engineering, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 30, 2026

**What do you like best about GIMP?**

What I love most about GIMP is that it’s completely free and open source, yet it still provides powerful tools for photo editing, graphic design, and image manipulation. It supports layers, masks, filters, and other advanced editing features that are often found only in paid software. Overall, it’s an excellent choice if you want professional-looking results without having to pay for a subscription.

**What do you dislike about GIMP?**

The biggest drawback is the learning curve, which is pretty typical for advanced editing software. The interface can feel confusing at first, especially if you’re not used to Photoshop-style programs. Some workflows also aren’t very intuitive, and performance can slow down when you’re working with large or complex files. On top of that, when I launch GIMP, it often takes a while to load.

**What problems is GIMP solving and how is that benefiting you?**

GIMP solves my problem of needing a powerful image editing tool without having to pay for it. It benefits me by giving me access to advanced image editing and retouching features without relying on paid software.

  ### 7. Convenient Adobe Alternative with Open-Source Flexibility

**Rating:** 3.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Chris Z. | Web Department Supervisor, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** April 28, 2026

**What do you like best about GIMP?**

I like using GIMP for quick design tasks because it's open-source software. It offers the same standard of editing fidelity as its competitors, which is really valuable. The UI is familiar enough to be intuitive for most users, making it easy to transition to GIMP as an alternative to major platforms like Adobe. It's well-maintained and rarely has issues with bugs. Plus, the initial setup was very easy.

**What do you dislike about GIMP?**

the editor can feel unresponsive or clunky at times. as the program is volunteer maintained, it doesn't get the same attention as a larger company could give. so, it is not as optimized or modern as some users might prefer

**What problems is GIMP solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I use GIMP for quick design tasks on open-source software, helping those who can't access licensed environments like Adobe. It's a seamless alternative with intuitive UI and editing fidelity similar to its competitors.

  ### 8. Powerful Free Tool with Room for Usability Enhancements

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Elta J. | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** May 13, 2026

**What do you like best about GIMP?**

I like GIMP because it is free, and I can create and customize it easily. I appreciate the filters and effects it offers. It's helpful for combining multiple images, adding watermarks, creating thumbnails, graphics, and banners. The initial setup was quite easy, as I just went to the website and installed the app, following the prompts. It took some time to get used to it, but it's been manageable.

**What do you dislike about GIMP?**

Work less smooth than Canva and Photoshop. Tools are harder to find. Less latest design.

**What problems is GIMP solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I use GIMP for editing photos, combining multiple images, and applying filters and effects. It's free, customizable, and lets me create watermarks, thumbnails, graphics, and banners.

  ### 9. Professional-Level Editing with GIMP

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Giacomo D. | Consulente Qualità ISO/IEC 17025 e ISO 9001, Mechanical or Industrial Engineering, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** February 18, 2026

**What do you like best about GIMP?**

What I like most about GIMP is that it’s completely free, yet still incredibly powerful. For anyone who doesn’t want to invest in expensive software, it delivers a professional-level image editing experience with no cost barrier.

Another big advantage is the breadth of tools and features it includes. From layers and masks to advanced selection tools, color correction, retouching, and custom brushes, GIMP covers everything you need for serious image editing. On top of that, it supports plugins and customization, which makes it even more flexible and adaptable to different workflows.

For amateur or semi-professional work, I find GIMP absolutely comparable to Adobe Photoshop. Photoshop may offer more advanced features and a smoother workflow in high-end professional environments, but GIMP is still more than capable of handling photo editing, graphic design projects, social media visuals, and creative compositions at a very high level.

Overall, I appreciate the balance it strikes between zero cost and strong functionality. It’s an excellent option for students, hobbyists, freelancers, or anyone who needs capable editing tools without paying for a subscription.

**What do you dislike about GIMP?**

At the moment, I don’t have any major complaints about GIMP.

For what I use it for right now—mostly amateur, personal projects—it covers everything I need. There’s a broad selection of tools, the performance feels solid, and it’s flexible enough to handle both photo editing and graphic design tasks without getting in my way.

I know some users point to a learning curve or say the interface feels less polished than Adobe Photoshop, but I haven’t run into any real limitations so far.

Overall, for a free and open-source program, GIMP has fully met my expectations, and at this stage I don’t feel like I’m missing anything essential.

**What problems is GIMP solving and how is that benefiting you?**

One of the main problems GIMP solves for me is having a reliable tool for image editing and small retouching tasks without needing to pay for expensive software.

I often need to make quick adjustments—correcting colors, cropping images, removing small imperfections, resizing visuals, or doing simple graphic edits. GIMP includes the essential tools I rely on (layers, clone stamp, healing tools, color correction, and selection tools), so I can handle these tasks efficiently.

Before using GIMP, small edits could feel inconvenient or too limited when I was working with basic editing apps. With GIMP, I have access to more advanced controls, which lets me work with greater precision and achieve cleaner results.

The biggest benefit for me is the flexibility and independence it provides. I can complete image editing tasks and small touch-ups in a professional way, without needing a subscription to software like Adobe Photoshop.

Overall, GIMP solves my need for a capable, cost-free editing solution, and it benefits me by giving me full creative control for everyday image editing work.

  ### 10. Powerful and Free, but a Clunky UI and Destructive Workflow Slow You Down

**Rating:** 2.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Graphic Design | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** May 14, 2026

**What do you like best about GIMP?**

I like layer modes and all the tools and you get access to professional-grade photo manipulation, color correction, and drawing tools without the ongoing financial overhead of an Adobe Creative Cloud subscription.

**What do you dislike about GIMP?**

Export and save are bizarre and takes multiple saves and windows to even save a document.
A steep, unintuitive learning curve: GIMP doesn’t try to mimic Photoshop, and the interface can feel dated and clunky. Even basic tasks can take more steps than expected, with extra menu digging and more clicks just to get where you want to go.

**What problems is GIMP solving and how is that benefiting you?**

A free alternative to Photoshop and the expensive monthly creative cloud subscription.

  ### 11. Free and Open Source Alternative to Photoshop

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** shrey g.

**Reviewed Date:** February 02, 2026

**What do you like best about GIMP?**

I mainly use GIMP for image editing and appreciate it as a free and open-source alternative to Photoshop. I trust GIMP because it's open source, allowing me to understand what is happening with the software. I like how open they are about their ecosystem, and I find the user interface quite similar to other applications I have used, making it easy to navigate. GIMP is an active part of our workflow as it doesn't require a powerful computer, which is perfect for quick image editing. The initial setup was surprisingly quite easy to integrate into our workflow.

**What do you dislike about GIMP?**

I think there's a lack of AI integration with other providers or even a local host model.

**What problems is GIMP solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I use GIMP for image editing as a free and open-source alternative to Photoshop. It fits seamlessly into our workflow, handling quick edits without needing a powerful computer.

  ### 12. Free and Powerful Alternative to Paid Software

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Niño D. | Guest Service Expert | Call SME, Leisure, Travel & Tourism, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** April 09, 2026

**What do you like best about GIMP?**

It’s free, and you can use it to do most of what other paid software can do.

**What do you dislike about GIMP?**

Sometimes, the controls are all over the place. There are instances where I cannot see a tool because I unknowingly snapped them out of the toolbar or hid them by accidentally clicking on certain options.

**What problems is GIMP solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Access to a photo editing software without needing to watch a bunch of tutorials. GIMP's controls are more intuitive.

  ### 13. Powerful, but Too Technical to Get Working Smoothly

**Rating:** 1.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Marketing and Advertising | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** April 23, 2026

**What do you like best about GIMP?**

You can do pretty much anything you want on it, as long as you’re technically savvy enough.

**What do you dislike about GIMP?**

You have to be extremely technically savvy to get this app working properly. There are a lot of different options you need to set up in advance to make sure the output is correct.

**What problems is GIMP solving and how is that benefiting you?**

If you need a system that helps you create or edit images, and you don’t want to pay the expensive price tag of Canva or Adobe, this software is for you. Just take the time to learn it.

  ### 14. A Powerful Free Alternative to Photoshop

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Nisitha W. | Executive Stores, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** September 30, 2025

**What do you like best about GIMP?**

The good thing about GIMP is that it is completely free and open-source yet it is endowed with many of those powerful features that you would expect to see in costly professional software. I appreciate that I do not have to worry about subscription charges or licenses GIMP enables me to access sophisticated edit tools without costing a cent. For freelancers, students, or those that must cut costs, it is a good deal.

**What do you dislike about GIMP?**

GIMP's largest problem is that its user interface is older than that of paid programs like Photoshop. It could look clumsy and sometimes illegible to new users. Some of its higher-end features are more difficult to access, and some processes require more steps. Furthermore, as an open-source program, updates and plug-ins sometimes come less smoothly and less well-designed than paid programs.

**What problems is GIMP solving and how is that benefiting you?**

GIMP allows me to access a decent photo editing application without having to spend much on software. I am able to edit images, create graphics, and enhance photos as a professional without having to purchase subscriptions or license fees. This has been especially useful for small business work and personal work where saving a few dollars is necessary but good quality is also required.

  ### 15. Professional-Grade Editing Power, Completely Free

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Retail | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 10, 2025

**What do you like best about GIMP?**

GIMP delivers a professional‑grade image editor without the price tag, combining robust layer‑based tools, powerful retouching, and extensive plug‑in support. Cross‑platform, fast, and highly customizable, it’s a versatile choice for photo cleanup, design work, and batch workflows.

**What do you dislike about GIMP?**

GIMP is a powerful, free alternative for photo editing and design, with flexible layers, solid retouching tools, and lots of plug-ins. Its downsides are a steeper learning curve and weaker non-destructive and print (CMYK) workflows compared to pro suites.

**What problems is GIMP solving and how is that benefiting you?**

GIMP removes the cost barrier to pro‑grade editing by being free and open‑source while still covering everyday needs. It streamlines photo cleanup and multi‑layer compositing, produces web/UI assets with precise exports, and automates batch work via plug‑ins and Python‑Fu/Script‑Fu; plus it supports common formats (PNG, JPEG, TIFF) and PSD/XCF for smooth handoffs, runs consistently on Windows, macOS, and Linux, and is highly customizable. The result is faster image creation for decks, docs, and e‑commerce, standardized lightweight assets for better performance, and less manual rework through automation.

  ### 16. Affordable Image Editing & Retouching That Delivers

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Majid M. | Freelancer, Graphic Design, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 30, 2026

**What do you like best about GIMP?**

Best is an inexpensive app for editing and retouching images. Compared with other apps, it feels like a more affordable option for me. It’s also a good alternative to Photoshop.

**What do you dislike about GIMP?**

What I dislike most is the user interface. It doesn’t feel good at all, and it makes it difficult to learn the workflow and use the tools smoothly. The Colour Grading and background removing are also not up to my expectations.

**What problems is GIMP solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Of course, I can edit images by adjusting brightness, color, and contrast, adding blur where needed, and removing marks. I can also create posters for social media as well as for offline printing.

  ### 17. Feature-Rich Free Tool That Rivals Adobe

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Higher Education | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** April 30, 2026

**What do you like best about GIMP?**

It's a free tool that has many of the features that Adobe offers.

**What do you dislike about GIMP?**

There is a high learning curve based on the many features that it has, but once you learn those then the return on time investment makes up for it.

**What problems is GIMP solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I did not have access to Adobe Photoshop to manipulate some files so GIMP helped me out for free.

  ### 18. Easy but quite basic

**Rating:** 3.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Architecture & Planning | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 10, 2025

**What do you like best about GIMP?**

It is free and available to everyone. It offers basic tools that can be sufficient for basic image editing. The interface is quite simple.

**What do you dislike about GIMP?**

It is less professional and performant compared to other programs such as Photoshop. I don’t like color management (white balance, curves correction, selective color correction). It doesn’t have the native option to save files for the web (you need to add an old plugin available online – the latest version of Gimp didn’t support it, so I had to reinstall an earlier version of the software). It does not allow converting images to CMYK mode for printing. You need to use other software to do it.

**What problems is GIMP solving and how is that benefiting you?**

It helps me edit images (resize, crop, delete parts, save in another format, reduce file size)

  ### 19. It's free yet offers a variety of features, including background transparency and correction of distorted images.

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Primary/Secondary Education | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** October 05, 2025

**What do you like best about GIMP?**

GIMP is packed with features not found in other free software, and the following two features are particularly recommended. First, you can load a GIF file into GIMP, use the selection tool to choose the color of the area you want to make transparent, and delete it to easily make that area transparent. Second, by selecting the perspective tool in the transform tools and simply moving the corner handles, you can perform trapezoidal correction.

**What do you dislike about GIMP?**

I think it's great that GIMP allows you to rearrange the interface to suit your preferences. However, the fact that you have to change modes (single or multi) from the window menu and change themes from the edit settings means that the locations for making changes differ depending on what you want to modify. It would be better if all these changes could be consolidated into one place, like a "screen layout" section, where you could make any adjustments.

**What problems is GIMP solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Software like Paint and Photo lacked the functionality to make image backgrounds transparent or correct distorted images, so these tasks couldn't be done. However, by using GIMP, it became possible to make the backgrounds of images, such as school emblems or website shortcuts placed on the desktop, transparent, and to correct trapezoidally distorted photos of watercolor paintings taken from below into rectangles.

  ### 20. GIMP the challenging image editor

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Filippo G. | Docente, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** October 02, 2025

**What do you like best about GIMP?**

What I love most about the GNU Image Manipulation Program (GIMP) is its incredible combination of power and accessibility. As a completely free, open-source tool, it demolishes the idea that professional-grade software must come with a subscription fee.

For my image editing and creative projects, GIMP is more than sufficient. I particularly appreciate its robust support for layers, masks, and extensive third-party plugins (like G’MIC), which allow for sophisticated photo retouching and digital art creation. It works flawlessly on every operating system, offering a huge, customizable feature set without ever asking for a cent. It truly is the definitive alternative to proprietary graphic software.

**What do you dislike about GIMP?**

What I find most frustrating about the GNU Image Manipulation Program (GIMP) is its steep learning curve and lack of polish. While it's a completely free, open-source tool that saves money, the user interface often feels unintuitive and can be challenging for anyone transitioning from proprietary software.

For professional creative projects, GIMP sometimes falls short despite its robust core features like layers and masks. The absence of native CMYK color support makes it unsuitable for many serious print workflows, and features like non-destructive adjustments are less refined than in competitors. Although it offers a huge, customizable feature set, navigating it can be frustrating, often slowing down the workflow compared to proprietary graphic software.

**What problems is GIMP solving and how is that benefiting you?**

GIMP provides a cost-effective functional substitute for expensive software, allowing you to perform necessary visual content creation even if the experience is "frustrating" or the workflow is "slowing down." The high financial barrier to entry for image editing is removed.

  ### 21. GIMP: Powerful and Simple for Image Processing

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Micaela R. | Architetto, Architecture & Planning, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 12, 2025

**What do you like best about GIMP?**

I like first and foremost the simplicity in using GIMP, the completeness of the tools, and the organization of the tools on the workspace. I appreciate the fact that, despite being software that doesn't have much to envy from the more renowned ones, it is still open source. Even for a self-taught beginner like me, it is possible to produce a sufficiently presentable work. Moreover, the initial setup of GIMP was very simple.

  ### 36. GIMP: Powerful and Free, but with Some Compromises

**Rating:** 3.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Matteo R. | MATT il grafico, Photography, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** April 07, 2025

**What do you like best about GIMP?**

It has tons of features for editing raster images, plugins, supports layers, masks, scripts... really impressive for being free.

**What do you dislike about GIMP?**

It is not very intuitive for those coming from Photoshop or for beginners. The interface can seem dated or unorganized. It supports many formats, but sometimes it can give problems with complex PSD or other professional formats.

**What problems is GIMP solving and how is that benefiting you?**

GIMP solves a very real problem: having access to advanced photo editing software without having to pay expensive subscriptions. In a world where tools like Adobe Photoshop have become almost a luxury, GIMP presents itself as a completely free, open source alternative available on all major platforms (Windows, macOS, Linux).

Personally, I benefit from it especially in occasional projects of graphics, photo editing and digital content creation. I don't need a professional paid suite to edit images, create banners or apply effects: with GIMP I can do all this with an acceptable learning curve. It is also particularly useful when I work on different computers, because I can simply download it without licenses to transfer.

One of the problems it has solved for me, for example, is the management of layers and masks in more complex projects: functions that are rarely found in free software, but that in GIMP are implemented in a surprisingly powerful way. Sure, there are limitations, but for those who need a flexible graphics editor and do not want to tie themselves to proprietary software, GIMP is a really valid solution.

Free, flexible editing for creative work.

**Reviewed by:** Travis G. | Security Administrator, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** May 13, 2025

**What do you like best about GIMP?**

I switched to Gimp a few years ago instead of maintaining an Adobe subscription. I have not regret it at all.

**What do you dislike about GIMP?**

Some of the user interfaces are slightly more steps than Adobe, but for a free software it is hard to complain.

**What problems is GIMP solving and how is that benefiting you?**

This replaced my Adobe subscription, lowering my cost of business

  ### 39. GIMP offers a creative experience in every pixel.

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Media Production | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 27, 2025

**What do you like best about GIMP?**

GIMP provides good performance in advanced photo editing and high–resolution image manipulation. It's easy and effective in creating detailed graphics for minimalistic visual elements and pixelated illustrations; the pen design helps to trace smooth lines for drawing free strokes and the interface looks technical but is highly customizable and that's nice.

**What do you dislike about GIMP?**

It isn't so intuitive at first, it offers free tutorials but anyway it took us a while to understand and master the handling of layers or clipping masks; so no need to get discouraged.

**What problems is GIMP solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Allows us to design book and magazine covers from scratch and incorporate illustrations and typographies with professional results. GIMP's ability to make detailed adjustments to images has allowed us to effectively handle most image manipulation needs.

**What do you dislike about GIMP?**

There is nothing that is dislike about the Gimp.

**What problems is GIMP solving and how is that benefiting you?**

It helps in easy free hand drawing and photo retouching and the best part is that it's an open source software hence many plugins can be used here.

  ### 41. Opensource yet very powerful image editor

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Entertainment | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** August 23, 2024

**What do you like best about GIMP?**

The good old GIMP!
Before all the AI boom and people started to use web browser editors, GIMP was the only real alternative to Photosop.
It's still very powerful, and very convenient.
Works locally, if you don't want to rely on cloud and have all your files locally.
Extensible with plugins.

**What do you dislike about GIMP?**

It's a bit heavy: if you want to do just a quick change it might take more time to load GIMP than really doing the job.
Also might seem a bit complex at the beginning, as it has a million options, but is quite easy to get used to it.

**What problems is GIMP solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Easy and quick things, like removing backgrounds from images, cropping, converting format, transparent layer etc.

  ### 42. Best open source photo editing tool

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** vishal l. | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** March 10, 2024

**What do you like best about GIMP?**

The favourite part of gimp is that it is free to use and light weight other than any product available in the market. It works on light machines seemlessly which makes it exceptional. The best thing is that gimp support almost all formats which I edit on.

**What do you dislike about GIMP?**

It sometimes have technical issues like multilayer selection and and transformations which used to be issue before but recent update has fixed it. The user interface is not very friendly like other alternatives but seemingly does the job. Other than that it is well developed app

**What problems is GIMP solving and how is that benefiting you?**

It helps me to solve the problems without having to take subscriptions also it is best to manage ui ux assets creations which is very handy and efficient. Being light weight I don't have to worry occupying more ram which side by side multitasking is easier.

  ### 43. A good free alternative, but I prefer paid alternatives.

**Rating:** 3.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Devon Courtney T. K. | Wellness Advocate | Bridging Evidence-Based Practices with the Esoteric, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 17, 2024

**What do you like best about GIMP?**

The thing I like best about GIMP is that it is free. I found the interface and the ease of using certain tools is not as intuitive as Photoshop, Luminar or Affinity. It is probably the best option that is Open Source and Free. It has a large amount of features for an open source option, but using them is not as easy as paid options. It could just be me.

**What do you dislike about GIMP?**

I find it more confusing that other items. I find it less intuitive, I find that there is a lot that a program like Affinity, Photoshop or Luminar do for me that I actually have to do for myself and have to know how to do. The paid options let me pretend to be a graphic designer and digital creative.

**What problems is GIMP solving and how is that benefiting you?**

GIMP can be a powerful digital creativity tool if you really want to learn to use the tool to its highest capability. There are a few things I do with softwares like this and my workflow is pretty Adobe specific. Interfaces like Affinity and Luminar copy Adobe pretty comparably so it's easier for me to use them. Everything is there, but in different places and it all work s a little differently where the other tools make up for your mistakes, where there's less margin for error in GIMP. Overall it is good, but I find it confusing and prefer to pay for ease of use.

  ### 44. Clean and elegant photo editing tool

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** pooja p. | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** April 02, 2024

**What do you like best about GIMP?**

It is very elegant design and ux makes it really easy to understand and work with gimp. Works best on mac and windows and Linux too. Also it is best fast and light weight tool for photo editing. The learning curve for editing is seamless. It is handy in designing the sprites and layer by layer selection

**What do you dislike about GIMP?**

Some features like multiplayer edit at same time would be more helpful but overall it is great tool

**What problems is GIMP solving and how is that benefiting you?**

It helps us to create character sprite an design elements for our games which is useful. Due to its open source nature it is free and efficient. Provides tons of features unlike it's competitors.

  ### 45. Gimp is AWESOME!

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Online Media | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** July 02, 2024

**What do you like best about GIMP?**

I think the best part is that it's open source and free to use, and its extensive set of tools and capabilities that rival many paid photo editing software. It offers powerful layering, customizable brushes, and a wide range of filters and effects, making it suitable for both basic and advanced image editing tasks.

**What do you dislike about GIMP?**

The user interface can be somewhat unintuitive and less polished compared to commercial alternatives, which can result in a steeper learning curve for new users. Aside from that, I love everything about it.

**What problems is GIMP solving and how is that benefiting you?**

GIMP is solving the problem of accessible, high-quality image editing by providing a free and open-source alternative to expensive commercial software. I'm able to manipulate photos, design graphics and create artwork for free and it is comparable to the high end softwares out there, which I love a lot!

  ### 46. Powerful Free Editing, Learning Curve Involved

GIMP offers a robust set of features comparable to premium software. The freedom of an open-source platform is great, and the active community ensures continuous improvement. The extensive range of tools, layers, and filters is commendable.

**What do you dislike about GIMP?**

The learning curve can be steep for beginners. Some users find the interface less intuitive than other graphic editing tools. Limited customer support compared to commercial alternatives might be a drawback for those seeking immediate assistance.

  ### 47. Fascinating!

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Marie-Claire P. | Digital Abstract NFT Artist , Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** November 30, 2023

**What do you like best about GIMP?**

I love that GIMP offers a wide variety of tools and features that make the software very complete and effective, it is very useful for Digital Art, It's funcionalty exceeded my expectations. The software is easy to install, friendly to use, and offers tutorials as well. I use it almost every day for my 2D abstract works of art, and I am fascinated by it's features. The software can open files from other photo editing software, and that is very useful. And besides all of this goodies, the software is a free an open source product, so it is great for teaching art.

**What do you dislike about GIMP?**

I dont have any bad feedback about this software, if I were to say something negative, it would be that you can not select many layers at once, but there are other creative strategies that can be used that work great too.

**What problems is GIMP solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Gimp is solving the issue that artists that have to pay a lot of money for digital art softwares, and the other ones that are free or less expensive are not as good as the ones that are more pricy, but GIMP, is the BEST free and open source software, that serves as substitute to the expenisve digital art software. Besides that, I use GIMP to teach digital art, because it is great for teaching due to its many features and because it is free and open source, and most students can not afford to purchase pricy digital art software. I LOVE GIMP :)

  ### 48. the tool for incredible designs

**Rating:** 3.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Antonio T. | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** March 18, 2024

**What do you like best about GIMP?**

Gimp has countless options to create all types of designs, its interface is very similar to other software, what I like is that it is very light and has the possibility of downloading add-ons.

**What do you dislike about GIMP?**

At first it took me a little while to adapt to their functions since, although they are powerful tools, their use is a little difficult.

**What problems is GIMP solving and how is that benefiting you?**

With Gimp we have been able to make our work easier and lower cost, since we do not need such powerful equipment to be able to create quality designs.

  ### 49. I absolutely love this program!

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Human Resources | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** February 25, 2019

**What do you like best about GIMP?**

It is exactly like photoshop, with very similar features, but costs nothing! I can edit pictures, play with the lighting, colors, effects and create posters for trainings. Can be used for absolutly everything! From a picture or a blank canvas.

**What do you dislike about GIMP?**

Might be nice to have a tutorial mode in the beginning to get how everything works, but overall awesome software.
I have it on my personal computer to edit pictures, and on my work computer to create posters, signs and publicity for trainings and human resources policies. Makes everything more interesting and visually appealing.

**What problems is GIMP solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Great way to customized training posters instead of dealing with more basic programs. Anything can be done!

  ### 50. GIMP- The free version of PHOTOSHOP but with less tools.

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Rishma R. | Information Communication Technology Teacher, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** October 21, 2023

**What do you like best about GIMP?**

GIMP is a free software and a great alternative for people who find it difficult to pay for Photoshop. It is a great software to help create visuals for my social media. The tools are laid out in an efficient manner and the hovering tooltip always provides sufficient explanation on each tool. It is user-friendly as well. It is not that complicated and actually easy to get a hang of. I use the software often as it is quick and efficient.Images can be exported in various formats.

**What do you dislike about GIMP?**

The selection tools are not so precise. It does not have the Magnetic Lasso tool unlike Photoshop so the output can be slightly messy.I wish they introduce more modern UI tools. Limited third party plugins.

**What problems is GIMP solving and how is that benefiting you?**

GIMP helps me quickly and efficiently create, edit and export visuals. It is also free and has a lot of tools that you have to typically pay for in another software so it is cost-effective. GIMP is also user-friendly and easy to get a hang of. It allows me to export images in different formats.
