"Great IDE Experience for Mainframe, but Expect Complex Initial Setup"

4/5

What do you like best about BMC AMI DevX?

What stands out most about BMC AMI DevX is how effectively it bridges modern DevOps practices with legacy mainframe environments. Moving away from standard ISPF/green-screen navigation to an IDE-based setup has drastically streamlined our day-to-day coding. The source-level debugging, automated test generation, and deep impact analysis allow us to immediately see execution paths and data flows across interconnected modules. In addition, its automated build and deployment pipelines make version control and release management far less error-prone when handling large multi-component rollouts. What do you dislike about BMC AMI DevX?

Initial setup and environment provisioning can be cumbersome, especially when establishing secure host communications and aligning release automation with complex mainframe repository structures. There is a noticeable learning curve for developers transitioning from native ISPF workflows to plugin-based IDE debugging, and documentation for troubleshooting automated test execution failures in pipeline builds could be clearer. Furthermore, performance can occasionally dip during heavy code analysis and dependency tracing on very large monolithic applications. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is BMC AMI DevX solving and how is that benefiting you?

It primarily solves the massive bottleneck of legacy mainframe development by bringing it into the modern DevOps ecosystem. Instead of wrestling with traditional ISPF green screens, I can work within a modern IDE to visually step through complex COBOL or PL/I applications. This drastically cuts down the time it takes to trace data flows, understand undocumented legacy logic, and resolve production incidents. Furthermore, it bridges the gap between our mainframe assets and our standard CI/CD pipelines, allowing us to manage and deploy code much faster and with significantly less risk.
