## Blackboard Reviews
  ### 1. Dated, Unintuitive UI and Slow Performance Hold Blackboard Back

**Rating:** 1.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Ali I. | Graduate Research Assistant, Research, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** April 14, 2026

**What do you like best about Blackboard?**

I think it provides the bare minimum of an LMS and that's the thing I do like about it. Beyond that it falls short on a lot of things.

**What do you dislike about Blackboard?**

There are a lot of things that can be improved with Blackboard. My perspective is of an instructor and a student and not the administrator of the complete installation, but I represent the largest userbase for Blackboard.

First thing is that the UI looks quite dated. NOt just that but it's also unintuitive to say the least. Often we had to upload videos to show students just where to click to get to a new course.

Another thing is performance. Since this is a SaaS product our complete interaction with it is through the web browser. Opening multiple tabs on the same browser quickly slows down the whole computer. This is obviously a problem.

There is also a lack of integrations, especially in importing different formats of exams and tests. This difficulty in integration extends to moving things from one course to another in the seem institution as well.

**What problems is Blackboard solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Managing thousands of students at scale is a big problem. It can be difficult to manage so many students and their courses. That is the exact problem they are solving.

As for pricing, if I were in the market for a new LMS, Blackboard would have to be considerably discounted for me to even consider it worth my time.

  ### 2. Blackboard Ultra: more intuitive workflows and constant technical support

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Higher Education | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** June 01, 2026

**What do you like best about Blackboard?**

After three and a half years of using it as a platform administrator and after following the transition to Ultra, I can say that today Blackboard is an LMS that keeps up with the times and is equipped with all the necessary features. With the new interface, workflows have become much more intuitive, and this is reflected in a reduced need for support from us towards students and teachers. I also appreciate the incredible effort made by Blackboard over the years in addressing the platform transition and the constant technical support. I greatly appreciate the fact that new features are introduced on the platform based on user requests, which can be voted on a specially created portal.

**What do you dislike about Blackboard?**

I don't like that some features, such as the portfolio and the course catalog, have become paid. Moreover, the portfolio is not even available in Italy. Additionally, Blackboard Illuminate, which provides analytical data related to courses to teachers and students, is not very useful in the standard license.

**What problems is Blackboard solving and how is that benefiting you?**

With the transition to Ultra, platform performance issues have been corrected and resolved, and all the main LTI integrations we use are perfectly functioning and integrated with the course menus. The AI-related features are constantly in development, and new functionalities are added periodically.

  ### 3. Easy Course Materials and Training Video Sharing, Though There’s Room to Improve

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Krystal S. | Payroll Manager, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** March 17, 2026

**What do you like best about Blackboard?**

Using it for courses I find it easy to use and pull up course materials. As an employee I use the media a lot for posting videos on training. We use it for training purposes, FERPA, Title IX training, Hiring processes etc. and I really like how it makes it easy to contract different group around campus.

**What do you dislike about Blackboard?**

Alot of the same content pulls up in difference section which can make it a little confusing to make sure you didn't miss a training.

**What problems is Blackboard solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Training is a big thing for us. Having one spot to put all training from starting as a new employee to how to approve time as mangers is great. Once stop for all resources rather than have multiple training sites.

  ### 4. Sixteen Candles

**Rating:** 3.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Higher Education | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** May 01, 2025

**What do you like best about Blackboard?**

I have been an LMS administrator and faculty with Blackboard Learn for 16 years, so my answers have some background. I particularly like Blackboard Learn Ultra's intuitive way to populate the course components and the variety of tools available to do it. The instructor or professor can start with a course outline or ask for one from Generative AI; then, populate the outline by adding components from top to bottom. Various components, such as text pages, links, quizzes, and written assignments, can be added. Anything can be revised, augmented, or moved. I also like also the degree of integration that Blackboard has achieved with different providers such as Pearson, Alex, Respondus, etc.; these are easily selected and integrated with the course.

**What do you dislike about Blackboard?**

The visual interface of Blackboard Learn Ultra is poor; the metaphor is like a wall with vertical lines and titles. There is no way of showing the student what is more critical and less, what is a core component of the class, and what is an auxiliary element. The student must open each component in the "wall" to determine what is inside. This should be more intuitive; for instance, use different colors and icons for overview, materials, dialogue, and assessments. The instructor should be able to display in the course map certain videos or interactive resources considered essential, e.g., "the lab", "the meeting room", "the AI advisor". Two very useful assignments of Blackboard Standard were lost: wikis and file-upload questions. The first allowed the creation of student presentations, and the second allowed the inclusion of text, images, sound recordings, or programs as part of of a test. I have also noticed that some back office tools present in Standard have been eliminated or reduced in capability, such as Date Management, Rubrics, Course Analytics, Course Reports, Performance Dashboard, and Retention Center. The Blackboard Editor has been reduced in features; it does not allow direct access to modify HTML code, bullets, indentation, double-space, etc. An overall find-and-replace feature and overall search are desirable features. The exit of Class Collaborate was a big loss because it was the best virtual classroom environment integrated with Blackboard Learn.

**What problems is Blackboard solving and how is that benefiting you?**

It helps to display all courses taught by the institution. However, it does not provide feedback about the status of these courses: Do they have all the desirable components? Are the courses active or not? Is the grade book updated every week?

  ### 5. Easy-to-Navigate Interface with Great Tools for Classes

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Ricardo A. | Branch Manager, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** March 24, 2026

**What do you like best about Blackboard?**

I find the interface very easy to navigate, with highly useful tools for taking classes, such as videoconferencing rooms and discussion sections. Additionally, submitting assignments is simple, and it’s just as easy to review them later.

**What do you dislike about Blackboard?**

One thing that could be improved is adding a built-in messaging feature, as it would make communicating with classmates much easier and more convenient

**What problems is Blackboard solving and how is that benefiting you?**

It offers a complete platform for pursuing a university degree, making the entire learning experience simple, accessible, and easy to use.

  ### 6. Helpful Group Assignments for Easier Grading

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Meghan D. | Digital Marketing Specialist, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** March 17, 2026

**What do you like best about Blackboard?**

It’s helpful that I can assign things to groups for grading. I also like that I can edit and save grades before posting them.

**What do you dislike about Blackboard?**

I wish there were a better way to send one-on-one emails, instead of having to use announcements or chats. I’d also like more aesthetic options for organizing my class so everything feels clearer and easier to manage.

**What problems is Blackboard solving and how is that benefiting you?**

It allows me to manage classes of 50+ students and grade their work quickly as well as provide feedback.

  ### 7. Powerful HTML/CSS Customization, but Accessibility and Learning Curve Need Work

**Rating:** 3.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Higher Education | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** March 10, 2026

**What do you like best about Blackboard?**

I like the ability to heavily customize content, including working directly in the HTML and CSS back end.

**What do you dislike about Blackboard?**

The learning module isn’t technically accessible. For keyboard users, it takes a lot of tabbing to reach it, even when trying to skip regions. The platform also includes a lot of features, which creates a bit of a learning curve for a new faculty member or instructional designer working in it.

**What problems is Blackboard solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I’m not entirely sure what problems Blackboard is trying to solve right now, but it would be genuinely helpful if it leveraged AI for course content creation and for accessibility remediation. That feels especially important given that the same company owns Ally, which is already one of the more established accessibility scanning tools for LMSs.

  ### 8. Keeps Courses Organized and Streamlined

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Higher Education | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 09, 2025

**What do you like best about Blackboard?**

What I like best about Blackboard is how easy it is to keep everything organized. I appreciate having all my course materials, assignments, and grades in one place. It really helps me stay on top of my classes and stay organized.

**What do you dislike about Blackboard?**

One thing I dislike about Blackboard is that sometimes it can be a bit slow or glitchy, which makes it frustrating to use. Also, a few features could be more user-friendly, so navigating everything feels smoother.

**What problems is Blackboard solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Blackboard helps solve the problem of managing all my course materials and staying organized. It makes it easier to access assignments, lecture notes, and grades in one place. This benefits me by saving time and reducing the stress of trying to keep track of everything manually, so I can focus more on learning.

  ### 9. Seamless Course Integration and Built-In Class Recording in Blackboard

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Higher Education | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** March 10, 2026

**What do you like best about Blackboard?**

Integration with course materials and convenience of making all class resources and assignments available to students. Also being able to record class sessions from within Blackboard. It has been extremely easy to use and implement course activities.

**What do you dislike about Blackboard?**

Marking attendance for a past class has been more difficult than it should be in how to add a previous class that was overlooked..

**What problems is Blackboard solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Blackboard keeps making updates that extend functionality in many ways and improves the environment. They have been adding AI tools and efficiencies.

  ### 10. Easy to Navigate Learning Platform

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Jonathan Kuffour O. | Graduate Research And Teaching Assistant, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** April 28, 2026

**What do you like best about Blackboard?**

Easy to navigate as a learning platform.

**What do you dislike about Blackboard?**

I don’t dislike anything about blackboard

**What problems is Blackboard solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Easy grading and monitoring students activity
