We're a small ISP providing internet to rural homes and businesses. Shortly after our initial launch of services we began to realize that we were presenting to customers in a way that made us appear to be disjointed. We utilize a variety of platforms for network management, customer service, billing, account management, inventory, email, SMS, and network monitoring. As if that wasn't enough, our hosted IP voice was on a 3CX server in Amazon's cloud and was a customized built using 3rd party plugins that extended the capabilities but made things more complex. Having worked for larger carrier networks previously I quickly realized that handing out a multitude of domain addresses for users to keep track wasn't an option that would inspire confidence. It created just as much confusion internally for sales and technicians who also had other apps and tools they utilized for their jobs. Bitly was a godsend! They allowed us to create a systematic approach to accessing everything. Even with the free service we could direct custers to the billing system with a simple bit.ly/companyname_billing which would point to the billing server. To get realtime network status, it was bit.ly/companyname_network. Voice went to bit.ly.companyname_voice and so one. In less than an hour I had 16 total access domains targeted with urls just barely longer than our own domain name. Shortly after we joined, Bit.ly began offering a premium service where you could attach your own domain and utilize subdomains. We upgraded from the free plan for this and haven't looked back. While the old links still work today, we have since changed things so that customers can access their voice, billing, ticketing portals by putting the service in front of our domain name and their choice of account ID, BTN, or billing street address, whichever they like. They ALL point directly to their own portals leaving them nothing to remember but our primary domain name and the "department name" they need to reach! Since there is no need to dive down into the DNS to do this and the API allows for creation of new customer links when the account is created, the need for an engineer to be involved is completely eliminated! **What do you dislike about Bitly?** The one thing I've been troubled with is that they seem to have a need to make changes to the interface too often. As we've grown, we've utilized their new QR code generator to print a QR on a sticker placed on the router that sends them to their portal, which when combined with the number of links becomes a bit confusing. Rearranging things makes this even more complex. Another issue is the pricing structure. The free service shouldn't be passed up by anyone as you can use up to 10,000 of their branded links. Using your own domain is $29 but stops you at 500 links. To get to the next level it's $199 per month for 3000 links. And if you want to get back to the level of the free links, it's in a category of "Let's talk" and it's a conversation that isn't cheap by any means. I would like to see all of these improved. I'm sure that the switch from using their domain to our own costs almost nothing. If 10,000 links can be made using their domain and a random string after and is free, $200 per month really should be sufficient for reducing their server load that no longer needs to create random but unique strings. **What problems is Bitly solving and how is that benefiting you?** We could do much of the same by manually making changes to the DNS record of our domain but it would required an engineer to take tome to do it and makes a complete mess of the DNS record. This is a far superior solution. Even without the API it would be easy to train those who setup new accounts to login and set it up as they setip the account. But the API now does this for us so all they have to do is create a new customer account and their links are all created at the same time. Not to mention, in places where links aren't clickable such as Instagram captions, nobody would be able to even try to remember a long URL to type into their browser! Bitly has helped us create shorter links for a better appearance within social media captions. We have also used bitly links on flyers or graphics where people can't actually click the link, for the purpose of ease in remembering the link if they wanted to look more into the info we are providing in the flyer or graphic. Even further, we also enjoy the custom branded link capability so that we can have more brand recognition in our URLs. We have also used their QR code feature. The analytics bitly provides for both the shortened links and QR codes has been extremely helpful for our marketing strategy because it helps us determine what links people are clicking on and what links people are not clicking on. **What do you dislike about Bitly?** We had trouble finding a custom domain for our short link. One thing we would like to see is with their browser extension to have a 'one-click' link creation. Ability to customize brand links and redirect in the future helps reduce the need to create unique links over and over for reoccurring events. **What do you dislike about Bitly?** Limited number of redirects is too low. I'm more likely to use redirects than generate hundreds of standalone links. If we still have links available and un-used on our plan, we should be able to use them for either redirects or unique links. **What problems is Bitly solving and how is that benefiting you?** Shortening long links. Customizing links. Tracking different forms of marketing pieces to compare reach. They provide a basic application where you need to pay in full for a QR code **What do you dislike about Bitly?** They trick you with a UI detail so that you think they have a monthly plan and then they charge you with a yearly subscription. Then what? DISASTER - After requesting a refund they answer you that is not possible. Once you tell them you have to right to have the refund they answer you "AFTER 14 DAYS" that you can request refund in 14 days :) Already requested but still no refund. **What problems is Bitly solving and how is that benefiting you?** Nothing at all. The tracking information (clicks, locations, UTMs etc) is helpful for our marketing campaigns. I haven't used a ton of competitors, but it's a bit more user-friendly than Blink in my opinion. **What do you dislike about Bitly?** Even with our paid subscription level, we're still only limited to 10 corrections/edits on existing links. This can be an issue on our end when our URL customization changes based on segmentation. **What problems is Bitly solving and how is that benefiting you?** Our website vendor requires ridiculously long, ugly URLs and we use Bitly for friendlies and QR codes.
