What do you like best about AWS Direct Connect?

AWS Direct Connect provides a dedicated, low-latency connection between on-premises infrastructure and AWS, improving performance and reliability.

It bypasses the public internet, offering consistent bandwidth and enhanced security.

It's ideal for high-throughput workloads like data transfer, backups, and hybrid cloud architectures.

Direct Connect also supports integration with AWS services like VPC, Transit Gateway, and Direct Connect Gateway for scalable network designs.

In my organization, Direct Connect is used as the primary connection to the data center, with a Site-to-Site VPN configured as a backup for redundancy Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about AWS Direct Connect?

While AWS Direct Connect offers reliable performance, initial setup can be complex and time-consuming, especially with colocation providers.

It lacks built-in redundancy, requiring manual configuration for high availability.

There are additional costs for port fees, data transfer, and cross-connects, which can add up.

What problems is AWS Direct Connect solving and how is that benefiting you?

AWS Direct Connect solves the problem of unreliable and inconsistent network performance over the public internet by providing a dedicated, private connection to AWS.

This results in lower latency, higher throughput, and more secure data transfers, which are crucial for enterprise workloads.

It also helps in meeting compliance requirements for data-sensitive applications by keeping traffic off the public internet.

Overall, it ensures stable and predictable network performance, which improves user experience and operational efficiency.

In my organization, we use Direct Connect as the primary path to connect our data center to AWS, ensuring stable performance for key applications and services. It’s particularly beneficial for large-scale data transfers such as backups, disaster recovery replication, and hybrid deployments involving services like Amazon S3, EC2, and RDS.

From a security and compliance perspective, Direct Connect helps us meet regulatory requirements by keeping traffic off the public internet and allowing us to integrate with private VIFs, Transit Gateway, and Direct Connect Gateway for controlled, segmented access across multiple VPCs and AWS accounts.

Additionally, using Site-to-Site VPN as a backup, we’ve achieved a highly available, failover-ready design. Direct Connect also benefits us financially by reducing data transfer costs compared to transferring large volumes over the internet. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
