  ### 1. A foundational tool for electrical engineers — powerful, flexible, and still evolving

**What do you like best about AutoCAD MEP?**

This is software that is very industry-standard in the building engineering field. There are some newer programs, like AutoCAD Revit, being used, but in electrical work it can be more of a pain than it is in AutoCAD.

I’ve been doing this for 26 years as an electrical engineer, starting with AutoCAD 14, which was the first real version similar to what we have now. It’s both a simple and a complicated tool for drafting electrical plans. What I mean by that is there’s more than one way to skin a cat, and in AutoCAD there are many ways to achieve the task you’re trying to do.

I took one of those adult school classes on AutoCAD, which was okay, but what they teach you is the most basic tools and the common tasks done in 2D and 3D. We only draft in 2D. In the classes they focus on the most common drawing tools—circles, lines, and arcs—and the variations of these basic shapes are what make up anything you will ever need to draw for the 2D drafting required in an electrical, building-permit-ready plan.

Before the MEP version, we would use the light version or the full architectural version. In those previous versions, MEP had to make all their own blocks of items shown. Panels, switches, and receptacles were all hand-drawn when needed, and then we would build our own libraries of symbols the way we like to see them on our plans. With one click on “Insert,” you’d be in a folder full of these symbols and pieces you had painstakingly drawn already and then made into blocks. That’s still wonderful if you already have that library built.

In this version, they’ve created a special version that has more of the BIM features, like auto-wiring, automatically creating panel schedules, and home runs automatically. A lot of the automated processes that BIM has are built right into this special MEP version. So if you are new to drafting and do any of these disciplines as a student, or you’re just learning the engineering craft, these features can add a lot of easier ways to see what standard documentation would look like instead of having to do it all from scratch.

If you are a seasoned professional, you may find some of these automations nice to use. Even if you don’t, it has a lot of special drag-and-drop features that do save you from copying, rotating, and moving. They used to have a command (and MOCORO) that was to move/copy/rotate, because in CAD, in the electrical disciplines, you would be doing that all day.

It’s really not that much more than the actual light version that engineers typically buy, but it has all the full features the standard full architectural version will have. Those features are mostly helpful in sheet setup and manipulating backgrounds for sheets.

I have used all the versions, and the MEP version I have used. For someone with as many years in it as I do, I already have all my block libraries.

**What do you dislike about AutoCAD MEP?**

You know AutoCAD is very good. However, the standard version involves a lot of clicking, selecting, moving, and rotating. After a while you get used to it and you get the job done. This version has a more intuitive engine that will move things against the walls automatically and rotate as needed.

That feature is both good and bad. Sometimes it snaps to the wrong side of the wall and you end up futzing with it until it feels like you have to force it to do what you want. Honestly, it’s the little new tools they add that annoy me the most. When a command is new, it can be buggy and more fiddly than you want it to be, and they usually fix it in the next version.

The biggest thing I hate now is that every version has something new about it. After using it for so many years, I like the classic menu. You can force it to be more like it was, but the default is the ribbon, and if you don’t have a profile to import it can be difficult to get it back to the way it once was. With older versions, you really had to set things up to match the way you draw, and after years and years of that I basically just copy and go straight to the buttons without thinking. But if it’s a new install on a new machine and I don’t have my profile, it’s like using a pencil with your left hand when you’re a righty. Yes, it can be done, but it takes time to relearn that muscle memory. If you’re an old, seasoned veteran of AutoCAD, you know what I’m saying.

Even the icon changed to look more cartoony in a couple updates, and readjusting to the look takes time. For new people coming up, it’s not a big deal because you’re probably used to the newer versions and you’re just learning the look anyway. But give it a few updates and wait until the one that changes on you when you’re used to a certain way—it becomes a pain to relearn.

I just hate when it changes in newer versions. Yes, the newer versions are more intuitive and usually have good commands, but it’s the time it takes to get everything set up again so you can really use it fast that frustrates me.

**What problems is AutoCAD MEP solving and how is that benefiting you?**

AutoCAD helps streamline electrical plan creation, especially when I’m putting together permit-ready documentation. Being able to build and reuse block libraries, adjust and manipulate backgrounds, and customize sheet setups saves time and keeps things consistent from project to project. The newer automation features also cut down on repetitive tasks and improve drafting speed—once you get used to them.

It really does work well for producing clean plans if you know drafting. Once you figure out what looks good, AutoCAD’s flexibility lets you carry your own style into all your plans so they have a standard, branded look. It’s a strong tool for electrical work since we don’t have as many elevation issues to deal with. And even when elevation or BIM comes into play, it still doesn’t document some things the way the old methods do. I make plans that can be understood in the old ways, while I’m constantly evolving them to reflect newer systems and a more modern look.

For example, I still run three circuits in a conduit and don’t homerun every single circuit. I use curved connections between lights, too. I’ve seen a lot of newer drafters use straight lines for everything, including the home run, and while it’s technically fine, to me every plan is a piece of art. That’s what keeps it fresh for me every day I work, even after thousands of projects.

**What do you like best about AutoCAD MEP?**

I’ve been using AutoCAD MEP for various projects and what stands out most to me is its intuitive design capabilities for both 2D and 3D modeling. It’s incredibly user-friendly, making it accessible even for those new to the software. The interface simplifies measurement taking, enhancing my productivity and the precision of my designs. While AutoCAD MEP is a powerful tool for 3D modeling and design, I've encountered some challenges with software integration and customization. Its performance can sometimes lag, especially with complex models, and the learning curve can be steep for those new to CAD software. Additionally, I find the subscription model to be on the pricier side, which might not suit every budget. Despite these drawbacks, its comprehensive features for MEP professionals are unmatched, making it a valuable tool in the industry.

**What do you like best about AutoCAD MEP?**

The specialized toolbars and shortcuts for mechanical, electrical and plumbing users are awesome!  They are a huge time saver and cover most of my custom shortcuts I've developed over the years.

**What do you dislike about AutoCAD MEP?**

In addition to the prohibitive cost, everyone on your design team must have the AutoCAD MEP add-ins.  If one person doesn't, they won't be able to effectively/efficiently edit or update the drawings.  There are work-arounds, but they take time.

**What problems is AutoCAD MEP solving and how is that benefiting you?**

The specialized toolbars and shortcuts for mechanical, electrical and plumbing save me time everyday.

**What do you like best about AutoCAD MEP?**

Not like the normal Autocad, the MEP allowed me to more efficient in doing HVAC drawings, instead of doing standard line drawings, the duct routing and annotation is so amazing, my work for any shop drawing has went over 40% down.

**What do you dislike about AutoCAD MEP?**

That is it not improving other areas as well as creating tables and custom create equipment annotations, their other software (Revit MEP) has this advantage.
Else the loading time, by time it becomes very slow and any computer update can effect its stability

**What problems is AutoCAD MEP solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Faster time in converting any single line diagram drawing into full shop drawings in matter of days, the other autocad you have to draw the airway ducts as line or squares and the elbows are horrible, the MEP helped me in this area.

**What do you like best about AutoCAD MEP?**

We use Autocad MEP for designing MEP drawings for kitchen layouts. One of the best things about AUTOCAD MEP is its user-friendly interface and easy shortcuts. The interesting thing about this software is we can able to customize its user interface, shortcut tools, and mouse gestures. Since keyboard shortcuts are the same as Autocad mechanical it makes it even easy to make drawing and reduces our design time. Their support team is always active and replies to our queries very quickly.

**What do you dislike about AutoCAD MEP?**

Very less tools are available for 3D design and using 3D commands little bit difficult. But am satisfied with its 2D design.

**What problems is AutoCAD MEP solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We work in complete kitchen solutions in which we use AUTO CAD MEP for complete layout design as well as plumbing and electrical routing design. Using this software our design lead time becomes much less since it has advanced tools and an easy-go UI. One thing is very helpful because most AUTODESK products are in similar designs and have mostly the same keyboard shortcuts so that a new user can adapt to this software within a short span of time.

**What do you like best about AutoCAD MEP?**

The toolset and separate functions strictly for MEP is extremely useful for those who are not CAD strong. This has helped me onboard users who come from Revit knowledge and was a seamless integration and transition. As with AutoCAD, you are able to type commands which is a huge help to users along with the tooltip.

**What do you dislike about AutoCAD MEP?**

The interface could improve to make it easier for users to navigate to.

AutoCAD is solving many issues with usability for users who are not familiar with the program. Engineers find it easier to use for their 2D needs when laying out components. This benefits me by being able to make connections with Revit for the user to understand

**What do you like best about AutoCAD MEP?**

Very little learning curve. Since it is part of Autodesk's product suite, people familiar with Autodesk products can easily become proficient with the software. AutoCAD MEP's seamless integration with other Autodesk products is a very useful feature, allowing professionals like architects, structural engineers, and others to collaborate effectively."

**What do you dislike about AutoCAD MEP?**

Steep Learning Curve: AutoCAD MEP can be challenging for newcomers.
AutoCAD MEP have stability issues, with occasional crashes or slow performance, which will be a problem when working with large projects. Since it is a resource-intensive software user needs to have a powerful computer, so this might not be good option for users with older hardware.

**What problems is AutoCAD MEP solving and how is that benefiting you?**

AutoCAD MEP works really well with other Autodesk tools we use on our projects, making it easier for professionals like architects and structural engineers to work together smoothly. AutoCAD MEP makes it easier to do MEP design. It has tools and resources that are easy to use, which helps me work faster and make fewer mistakes. This saves me time and makes it less tiring to create detailed MEP systems.

**What do you like best about AutoCAD MEP?**

I like how versatile AutoCAD MEP is. We were taught how to use this when I was still at college and up until now, I use it atleast once a week for my freelance work as an electrical designer. It can display 2d and 3d and can be really played with as there are a lot of free online tutorials on how to design using Autocad. For any problems or suggestions, they can be emailed right away.

So far, so good. There are no flaws as long as you use a PC or laptop that has ram that could process and render your designs.

Autocad helps me lay out an electrical design with no struggles. Symbols commonly for engineering use are also built in, so it saves me time to finish my projects.

**What do you like best about AutoCAD MEP?**

The large robust catalog for MEP design, specifically piping, allowing to design in 2D and cut 3D sections as well as adding items like check assemblies and pumps.

**What do you dislike about AutoCAD MEP?**

That is doesn't work with Civil 3D as far as being able to bring content in and use in that software.

We use MEP from Small Pump Station design since we can save time and cut the sections instead of drawing sections by hand. It also updates the sections when the design is updated.

**What do you like best about AutoCAD MEP?**

It allows me to bring CAD into Revit and make changes as required. Since we are an A/E firm, having the extra MEP tools helps out our engineering side of things.

**What do you dislike about AutoCAD MEP?**

Seem clunky from an Architectural standpoint. However, I have been spoiled with Revit, so stepping back into any 2D drawing software seems a little clunky.

**Recommendations to others considering AutoCAD MEP:**

If you are using it for Architectural drafting, it will seem clunky.

**What problems is AutoCAD MEP solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I can bring in CAD files of site plans, I can find CADs of details and edit them before they come into Revit. I can pull square footage if needed and I can send contractors what they need.
