What do you like best about Adobe Acrobat?

What I like most about Adobe Acrobat Pro is its Preflight Verification and PDF/A archival toolset.

When I’m preparing structural submittals, final design calculations, and stamped record drawings for municipal plan checks or public infrastructure authorities, long-term compliance matters. Adobe’s Preflight engine allows me to automatically audit complex drawing packages against strict PDF/A standards by catching font-embedding problems, properly flattening layers, and flagging color profile issues before submittal. That gives me real confidence that our digital PE stamps, calculations, and structural markups will remain permanently readable and unchanged in city archives for decades to come. What do you dislike about Adobe Acrobat?

Here are the three biggest headaches I ran into with Adobe Acrobat Pro when managing heavy engineering packages.

Severe vector lag and system bloat: Opening multi-layered structural sheets or CAD drawings would regularly trigger freezes and background CPU spikes. Acrobat’s background bloat—like unneeded cloud sync and intrusive AI features—often choked our workstations right when we were trying to render complex rebar and framing layouts.

Exorbitant subscription costs: The forced recurring subscription model turned into a major overhead for our firm. We ended up paying premium rates for graphic design and marketing tools that structural engineers simply never use.

Frustrating, cluttered UI: Adobe’s constant interface redesigns kept breaking my team’s muscle memory every few months. Adobe Acrobat solves two critical compliance problems in my structural engineering workflows.

Long-term document archiving and city compliance: Municipal authorities and plan-check agencies require permanent, tamper-evident digital records. Acrobat’s PDF/A conversion and Preflight engine automatically flag issues such as missing embedded fonts, unflattened layers, or non-compliant color spaces. Catching and correcting these items before submittal helps ensure our stamped structural calculations and record drawings remain fully readable in city archives decades later, without layout corruption.

OCR text recognition on scanned submittals: We frequently receive legacy paper drawings, scanned field reports, or older shop submittals as flat raster images. Acrobat’s OCR engine converts these static scans into searchable, selectable text, which lets my team quickly pull critical numbers—like soil bearing capacities or rebar yield strengths—from old physical reports without having to re-type everything by hand.
