Excellent drive or file encryption

I use VeraCrypt for encrypting a virtual volume in a file. It securely stores sensitive files and allows me to keep the file on cloud storage or send it to someone else. Also has the ability to encrypt the entire disk; I like this for a laptop or other mobile devices.

VeraCrypt, encryption made easy

VeraCrypt is a free open source fork of the discounted TrueCrypt application. It is available for Windows, Linux and OS X. This disk encryption tool allows you to encrypt your system drive which means that if someone steals your laptop, they will not be able to access your data without knowing your password. VeraCrypt also allows you to create an encrypted container with your private files which you can store on your thumb drive, on cloud or send through email. I find it very simple to start with VeryCrypt while it still provides sophisticated characteristics for the advanced user (For example, which encryption and hash algorithms you would like to use)

VeraCrypt - Store files securely

VeraCrypt is an advanced data encryption tool developed for a long time, created based on the popular TrueCrypt. There are not many changes to the original, but they are significant and increase the level of security of encrypted data. VeraCrypt allows you to encrypt entire discs, their partitions and portable USB disks (flash drives), as well as to create virtual encrypted drive (including hidden ones) of a specific capacity - in both cases protected with a password against unauthorized access. Encryption is performed with the use of very strong encryption algorithms AES-256, Serpent and Twofish. Cascading encryption is also possible, i. e. data can be encrypted one by one with several algorithms. The developers boast that their tool for encrypting a system partition using PBKDF2-RIPEMD16 performs 327661 iterations, not 1000 as in TrueCrypt. Going further, on the official website of the project we can find information that in case of standard data containers and other TrueCrypt partitions it performs 2000 iterations, and VeraCrypt uses 655331 for RIPEMD160 and 500000 for SHA-2 and Whirlpool, which has a significant impact on the protection of encrypted data against e. g. Brute-Force attacks.

What is VeraCrypt?

VeraCrypt is an open-source disk encryption software designed to provide robust security for data storage. This tool enhances security by encrypting entire storage devices or creating virtual encrypted disks within a file. VeraCrypt is known for its strong encryption algorithms and is widely used for protecting sensitive information against unauthorized access. It supports a variety of operating systems, including Windows, macOS, and Linux. As a successor to TrueCrypt, VeraCrypt addresses many of its predecessor's security vulnerabilities. The software is maintained by a community of developers and can be accessed and downloaded from its official website at [https://www.veracrypt.fr](https://www.veracrypt.fr).
