What is LabCup?
LabCup is a cloud-based platform for managing chemicals, equipment and lab compliance in universities, research institutes and industrial labs. It was first implemented at Trinity College Dublin by university researchers who wanted to fix the everyday problems of running a lab. After more than a decade of development, it is used by academic and commercial customers across Europe, North America, Africa, Australia, Asia and the Middle East.
Built around the chemical lifecycle
LabCup's core is a chemical inventory system that follows each substance from purchase to disposal. Every chemical and item gets its own barcode or ID, so researchers can find what they need quickly and lab managers get an accurate, live view of stock across rooms, buildings and departments. To cut down on data entry, LabCup automatically retrieves key chemical information, including safety data sheets (SDS), GHS hazard classifications, synonyms, chemical structures and emergency data. That information is then used throughout the system. Users can also add chemicals by taking a photo, as image recognition identifies the product and fills in its details.
Safety and compliance in the same system
LabCup is designed for safety officers as well as researchers. COSHH risk assessments can be completed and managed in the platform using the chemical data already stored there. Digital floorplans give emergency responders up-to-date information about what hazards are present and where. A digital fire registry, training records and compliance reporting tools help institutions meet their regulatory obligations with less paperwork.
LabCup also covers the end of the chemical lifecycle. The waste management module lets organizations set up waste streams, create labeled waste containers and guide users to the correct container for each disposal. Content reports for each container support safe collection and accurate records.
Beyond chemicals
LabCup also works as a wider lab operations tool. It includes equipment and room booking, asset management, purchasing, and registration of commercial or lab-made mixtures and solutions. Shared equipment and inventory visibility help institutions use existing resources, avoid duplicate purchases and reduce waste.
Modular and flexible
LabCup is fully modular. Organizations choose the modules they need and can add more later, so a single department can start with chemical inventory and expand to risk assessment, bookings or waste management over time. Because it is cloud-based, it works on any device, from lab benches to safety offices.
Independent by design
LabCup is completely independent and has no commercial ties to any chemical manufacturer or supplier. Customers can trust that the system serves their interests and does not steer them toward particular vendors. The company describes itself as a development partner, working closely with customers to shape new features around real lab needs.
