Highlighter is the practice management platform for special education advocates. It replaces the scattered folders, email threads, and spreadsheets most independent advocates run their practice on with one place for every client's records, analysis, prep, and time.
Document analysis. Upload an IEP, evaluation, progress report, or behavior plan as a PDF, Word file, or image. In under a minute Highlighter returns a structured summary that pulls out present levels, goals, services, accommodations, and potential issues, so the first read of a dense document takes minutes instead of an evening.
Meeting preparation. Highlighter builds a prep packet from the student's actual records: key issues, suggested questions, services data, and talking points for that specific meeting.
Professional communications. Draft parent-school emails and letters grounded in the student's plan, ready to send or edit.
Case management and timekeeping. Log calls, meetings, and emails as case notes. Track time per family, invoice for it, and run reports on where your hours go. A timeline of events, deadlines, and parent observations gives you a paper trail when a district misses a date. Forward client emails to your Highlighter address and they land in the right case automatically.
Family collaboration. Invite a client's family into their case and choose which documents, timelines, and updates they see. Families do not need a paid plan to collaborate on a case you manage, and they get tools to communicate with the school between your sessions.
Highlighter PRO is $59 per advocate per month or $549 per year, with unlimited families per seat, no setup fees, and no contracts. There is a 30-day free trial. Advocacy organizations get custom pricing with dedicated onboarding, usage reports, and priority support. Customers include the DC Office of the Student Advocate and other government-funded advocacy programs.
Data is encrypted in transit and at rest, and nothing is shared with schools, districts, or third parties. Highlighter was created by Jake Fishbein, a former teacher and school administrator, and Mike Oliver, founder of the Alma student information system. Work began in 2023 and the company is based in Washington, DC.
