O design assistido por computador (CAD) de uso geral é um software de prototipagem para designs de motores, esboços arquitetônicos, modelos 3D, protótipos e maquetes de canteiros de obras e projetos de construção. O CAD de uso geral funciona com a integração de software de modelagem 3D, software BIM, software de engenharia civil ou software de design gráfico para traçar designs técnicos, detalhados e intrincados.

O software CAD de uso geral é um software de engenharia e design geral que todas as indústrias podem usar para desenvolver designs de plantas nas etapas iniciais do ciclo de vida de um produto. É utilizado nas etapas de ideação, criação e planejamento de um modelo de projeto. Uma vez que um plano ou maquete está pronto, o documento CAD circula dentro das equipes de P&D, teste e gerenciamento de projetos para aprovações e mais detalhes de design.
