Best OS for old hardware **Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars **Reviewed by:** Verified User in Computer Software | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.) **Reviewed Date:** June 07, 2026 **What do you like best about Zorin?** Zorin is a lightweight Linux distro that runs incredibly smooth even on my old Compaq 2003 laptop which honestly says a lot. I've been using it for about 4 to 5 years now and it never lets me down. The interface is clean and familiar, so I didn't have to spend much time figuring things out. Apps like browsers and media players installed without any trouble. And since it's completely free, the value for money is just unbeatable. No unnecessary bloat, no slowdowns — just a solid and reliable system day after day. **What do you dislike about Zorin?** The only thing I'd say is that some software that's available on Windows isn't directly available on Zorin, so you have to find alternatives or workarounds. Also, occasionally after an update, some settings reset which can be a little annoying. Nothing deal breaking though, especially considering how well it runs on older hardware. **What problems is Zorin solving and how is that benefiting you?** My main problem was that my old Compaq laptop couldn't handle Windows anymore , it was slow, laggy, and practically unusable. Zorin completely brought it back to life. I can browse the internet, watch videos, and handle everyday tasks without any freezing or crashing. It basically saved me from having to buy a new laptop, which is a big deal. Five years in and it still runs like it did on day one. ### 2. I really appreciate its similar experience to Windows, which is enhanced by the Appstore having a lot of similar apps and a Windows-like theme. I also find apps like LibreOffice, which is similar to Excel by Microsoft, useful for writing documents and legal deals. **What do you dislike about Zorin?** I think Zorin could support more apps. I'd like to see it support apps like WhatsApp Business, MS Edge, and Excel. It wasn't so easy to install, and it doesn't support a lot of customization for drive types. **What problems is Zorin solving and how is that benefiting you?** I find Zorin to be very lightweight, with a similar experience to Windows. It uses paper icon and material icons that looks super flashy. It's lite version is used in computer with low hardware configurations but it laggs. It can also run on 10 years old computer. The lite version requires only 512 mb of RAM. **What do you dislike about Zorin?** Although it looks nice but there is an issue with os, it lags on computer system hardware. Specially when I was using it on my low configuration Compaq presario laptop, it started heating and fans were not slowing down so removed this OS. Integrated with Android phone no mess clean desktop productivity apps come included fast and snappy Mac OS style bar at the bottom Very easy to setup **What do you dislike about Zorin?** customisation level is higher on some other distros. Free version lacks flexibility. citrix workspace interface a bit messy At the start, I had a problem with configuration of the driver. **What problems is Zorin solving and how is that benefiting you?** Feel more productive. Phone integration is amazing. Works with citrix multiple desktop Whatsapp / Teams/telegram all available integration is useful No spyware / respects privacy very stable desktop. no downtime. Software Center to download and install automatic without the need to run code in terminal, Snap compatible. **What do you dislike about Zorin?** Compiling rpm software and tweaking Ubuntu software gives error, not 100% supported by Zorin desktop theme. **Recommendations to others considering Zorin:** If you are looking for a beautiful and stable system, I recommend Zorin, it is compatible with the ubuntu software package (the most popular GNU Linux distribution) and many more functions. **What problems is Zorin solving and how is that benefiting you?** I use less hardware resources compared to Ubuntu, desktop with unique theme and pleasing to the eye, compatible with Debian/Ubuntu software and security tests for my web server. ### 10. UX is also very good as compared to other Linux based OS. It's quite similar to windows OS so it's very easy to use for a new user or first-time user **What do you dislike about Zorin?** You have to install or update the applications through the terminal. If you are unknown to the terminal-based approach then it's quite difficult to understand for first time user. Sometimes Wifi issue came in specific laptops and you have to install some additional software or device managers to handle this issue. **What problems is Zorin solving and how is that benefiting you?** If you are new to the IT industry and you don't have a MAC laptop, They will advise to use Linux based OS for multiple reasons.
