I heard from a friend who works in a web company as a Linux systems admin. Very simple installation, you can find many documents on the official site and the web. But the configuration is a bit complicated for a network guy. I am a network engineer and it is a system monitoring tool. My friend tells me it's better for system monitoring, but in my opinion, if you want network monitoring, you can use different software. **What do you dislike about Zabbix?** My experience with Zabbix has been perfect, so there's nothing to complain about except the lack of a truly comprehensive manual for the deployment and initial configuration of the supported and long-term updated version 4. **Recommendations to others considering Zabbix:** Use it to have everything protected, so you can always see what's happening with your link, then everything will be under control with a good monitoring team. It can monitor all systems and bring in just about anything that outputs a counter or log file to be monitored. The system can perform trending analysis and determine when a problem is getting ready to happen, not just rely on thresholds. The system utilizes MySQL which is easy to find literature on how to manage. It is also preparing to support Elasticsearch for a storage back-end which can scale massively. The use of agents means that there are multiple points of monitoring which distributes the monitoring load. It also means that other products which rely on a centralized "probe" to read counters don't get too bogged down or take out multiple monitoring points when they fault. Because Zabbix is open source it is easy to run a setup in both your Production and development environments which makes testing much easier. **What do you dislike about Zabbix?** While the use of agents is great, it also means that you have to keep them updated as time passes. This means that there's a management aspect to keeping Zabbix up and running. Also if the agent stops running you lose your counters for that time period. Because the system is open-source you will rely on yourself or the community to write monitoring packages for the systems or applications that you are keeping an eye on. Because of this if something changes and you're using a package that is abandoned or hasn't been updated in a long time you may find yourself fixing the bugs solo. WHile this means you can keep things up and running it also means that you may need to scrap your monitors at some point and recreate them in order to keep a system monitored. **Recommendations to others considering Zabbix:** Have a solid understanding of Linux. We've got a lot of resources and aren't typically pushing them to the brink. However, when issues arise, the ability to analyze and correlate load across multiple hosts has been a big win. **What do you dislike about Zabbix?** A monitoring system and the story of the boy who cried wolf, never the twain should meet. Unfortunately, we have some situations where we receive so many messages about an error that it leads to the formation of bad habits. This is largely due to our system architecture and how specific monitors detect and report the same issue on multiple hosts. Specifically, storage utilization on a shared mount. We've made some inroads in solving this, but it continues to be a source of spam and desensitization to warning messages. **Recommendations to others considering Zabbix:** We've used other monitoring systems like Nagios and Hyperion. Zabbix is a simple solution that has many of the core features you want out of a system/application monitoring application. I recommend it as a tool that you evaluate when considering system monitors. **What problems is Zabbix solving and how is that benefiting you?** We have quite a few hosts across multiple test and an operations environment. Being able to integrate the monitoring of those into a single monitoring solution has been a critical aspect of our systems approach.
