What do you like best about Xfce?

- Rock solid stability. Fantastic performance on the weakest of machines as it is so lightweight.

- Highly customizable with the ability to customize every part of your desktop, install tray widgets and use various GTK themes and icon-sets.

- Easy to use for anyone who is familiar with Windows. The XFCE spin of Ubuntu (Xubuntu) makes this really easy to get into. Doesn't try too hard to be different (like Unity on Ubuntu for example).

- Included software is flexible and powerful (for example, the Thunar File Manager). Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Xfce?

- Enabling window compositing effects can weaken performance immensely (even with a powerful NVIDIA GPU and proprietary drivers).

- Development is slow. Last major update was February 28th 2015, more than a year ago.

- Can take a while to customize it to be as productive as possible. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Recommendations to others considering Xfce:

If you're looking for a lightweight and highly configurable and customizable desktop environment for Linux, XFCE is definitely worth looking at. Take a look at Xubuntu to see how it's done well.

Alternatively, Linux Mint's 'Cinnamon' desktop is worth a look at which runs on-top of GNOME 3. Requires a more powerful PC however. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is Xfce solving and how is that benefiting you?

What do you like best about Xfce?

This desktop environment is following the KISS principle, keep it simple stupid. It's based on GTK+ and not so disruptive as GNOME project.

Debian integration is just great.

Anyway I am not using so much other applications like thunar file manager or calendar etc, most of my apps are running in fulll screen mode, but I have to admit that system levels in task bar are convenient, Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Xfce?

I think memory fingerprint could be enhanced, there is no need to provide so many services, and no special customization on first run, E project let user decide the profile that match its need, I think this is a good idea.

I also faced a bug in xfce-power-manager that conflicted with LXDE, so better avoid to have them both on your system, just purge one of them if you don't use it. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Recommendations to others considering Xfce:

Try to install Xubuntu it's quite popular over years.

As said earlier XFCE is using GTK+ toolkit so it should be able to support wayland graphics system, I haven't tried but it could worth to be tested if you're looking for lightweight environment. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

I used as default desktop in a VM shipped to my projects partners.

"Speeds up workflow"

What do you like best about Xfce?

It's fast, good looking and has a range of options for customisation. The ability to alt-tab through windows and use workspaces is great and speeds up my workflow significantly. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Xfce?

XFCE has no native Wayland or Mir support.

There is also no support for animated entry/exit for panels. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is Xfce solving and how is that benefiting you?

Less powerful computers can be used, as it conserves system resources. The workspaces feature allows for us to manage and organise our setup, and the hotkeys that we can use to jump to a workspace speeds up our workflow. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you like best about Xfce?

Xfce is really good, it's light and fast and it gets the work done. It's modular approach is great, you can swap applications you don't like for your own and the Desktop Environment doesn't get in the way Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Xfce?

Configuration could be done easier but it is not that big of a deal Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
