While Polyglot and qTranslate are certainly viable, even good options, WPML is still the first choice when doing localization within WordPress. It is powerful, it is extensible, it is highly customizable. And if you're in education or NGO/non-profit, it is free. If you're a commercial user, you know you're getting the best solution, albeit at a price. In my projects I have actively switched from the free options to WPML because the level of support is noticeably higher and the overall robustness of the solution is more complete. Are you properly speccing your host or hosting environment for everything your website is doing and for the concurrent connections you will have? If there is one cost to having the best, it is also having the heaviest. Recommendations to others considering WPML: Do a thorough evaluation of what you need. Maybe the free options will work for you. But will they work for the next person administering your site? Will you get the support you need when you switch themes or do a redesign? Will you get the support you need when implementing multi-site? WPML gives you access to a higher level of support. WPML is the best-so-far solution for providing a multilingual website with the ability to easily switch between localizations and to stay within that localization as an end-user browses the site. What I like best from WPML is the big amount of options and flexibility of tools in order to manage languages inside a website. Maybe the most disappointing thing about WPML is how difficult it can become using some options. It can really become a headache if you can't control some options. I usually work with wordpress multilingual websites that require a tool to manage different languages and WPML is the most advanced and complete plugin available to solve any kind of issue related to multi language web sites.
