I liked the gutenberg block editor, but not as much as before. It was neat at first, but the fact that it saves specific block code directly into the content is dumb. The default blocks have dumb ways to adjust the styles. Much of it becomes hardcoded sizes which don't translate into decent responsive designs. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com. What do you dislike about WordPress.org? It's super outdated. Being a theme developer is a terrible experience. At the very least, they could create duplicate copies of the function names so that they all followed the same naming convention rather than just throwing up new ones. The move to a REST API is OK, but the actual way to configure the endpoints is just as bad as the rest of the WordPress APIs. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com. Recommendations to others considering WordPress.org: Don't. Look at where the tech and market for websites are actually heading. Everything is moving toward a headless setup. Learn React or Vue, Next or Nuxt, Gatsby or Gridsome. Play around with newer and very popular CMSes that are headless focused like Sanity or Strapi. Many are very affordable and even have free options. You can use Sanity as your hosted CMS for free and then host the frontend on Netlify for free with very generous limits. It's not really solving anything. In my experience, the only thing it does is gives people who don't know anything about development an opportunity to lie to clients by claiming they do. Then they use page builders to whip something together, but the moment they ever need anything of any actual substance, they have to call in someone like me. Then we have to work with their broken code and always try to hack these page builders to do the most basic things. The only benefit I derived from it was when I first began freelancing. For the reasons previously listed, it's very easy to find work since the majority of people running "web agencies" with WordPress don't know what they're doing. WordPress was originally recommended as the ultimate solution for building and managing my multiple web-sites. I had sites developed by my web-dev production contractors, and was running 4 online when they all began to crash over the past several months. Because it was expensive to re-hire the developers to fix the sites, and even though it was supposed to be so easy to manage, it wasn't. My web-sites wound up offline, unusable, and eventually I had to actually dump all of them and rebuild from scratch with a tool (on GoDaddy) that I could use, manage, and keep updated. Not a fit for my organization. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com. What do you dislike about WordPress.org? I didn't like the propensity of the apps and plug-ins to break all the time. Turns out the reason it was so highly recommended by developers is because it's open source and free. Which also turns out to be the big problem with WordPress - because it's open source, everyone knows how to hack it. Everyone knows when there's a major security flaw and can exploit it, and you are constantly updating the app and the plug-ins. And when either of those get out of joint, your web-site is toast. Free, Open Source, when it's working the interface is clean and essentially WYSIWYG. The templates that are there are stunning and everything is customizable. Wordpress is meant to help users make their own site with everything personalized to the way they want it. While the existing templates are amazing, they are really limited if you already have a specific theme or vibe in mind. Getting the cooler functions are eye-catching interaction widgets usually require some knowledge of coding.
