And once used properly it is not too complicated to operate by an un-skilled user. It is riddled with plugins that promise the world but seldom deliver. Not to mention the need to update a version every other week in order no to be exposed to security risks. At first glance it seems like it would be easy to use, but this is only true if you use a template. There are many templates to choose from, however. **What do you dislike about WordPress.org?** WordPress is not very customizable, and it is hard to create nice websites because so many of the templates are subpar. The ones that are nice you end up realizing don't fit your needs exactly the way you thought they would. It is frustrating to use. Don't let the option to adapt your own HTML fool you. If you're hosting a very basic blog it is great for that - post something with a title and some paragraphs and you're good to go. **What do you dislike about WordPress.org?** Wordpress makes it unnecessarily complicated for any normal individual to use their product. The UI is very outdated and the UX is terrible in many ways. As a designer, it shocks me knowing the amount of businesses who use Wordpress to host their site. You have to use a plugin for pretty much ANYTHING you want to do in order to make a functioning website because Wordpress is built for extremely basic blogs and that's it. You also have to use a separate site builder to design pages if you want to customize the templates, which are often glitchy and hard to use. The templates are mostly outdated and very limited. In fact, the entire site structure is very limiting. Things are in weird places navigationally, which just sets anyone up for failure. **Recommendations to others considering WordPress.org:** My recommendation is: Don't. Use literally any other site builder.. Wix, Squarespace, Webflow, etc. Wordpress is not worth the pain and time spent slaving over your computer trying to get some small thing to work because it makes no sense. A WYSIWYG editor seems to put blinders over my eyes and I feel imediately powerless. This is true for any such CMS tool, not just WordPress. This being said, however, WordPress is least user fiendly WYSIWYG editor that I have tried. It's editor took days to become remotely familiar. I really like that it's open source. As a php developer myself, I like that I can dig into the internals of the code to find out what's going on. Also, the documentation is fabulous. A rich plugin ecosystem and rich APIs for writing your own plugins. All in all, it's a mature project with a fantastic base of plugins and themes. **What do you dislike about WordPress.org?** It's a security nightmare though. Historically it's been one problem after another with sites being hacked and defaced regularly. Add in that some updates break backward compatibility with themes and plugins, and webmasters tend to not upgrade it which leaves them with hackable sites. My site would shut down for segments of time multiple times a day. We tried to run diagnostics many times, but came to no real conclusion of the issue. However, it did use great integration with other applications and software. It provided quite a bit of versatility in its use. It is the base foundation of how anyone can make a website nowadays. It is universal. **What do you dislike about WordPress.org?** I don't think it's user-friendly. I think you need a stronger baseline in understanding tech in order to figure out how to use it. I don't fully understand how to edit the themes. I was worried that widgets would negatively affect my appearance. I also like that it is free to use. **What do you dislike about WordPress.org?** I have many dislikes for this product. You must have programming knowledge to build anything more than the most basic of sites. They have ads which rave about their customer support for those without programming knowledge, but I found the customer support to be very disappointing. The only free support offered is to check through the forums or submit your own questions on the forums, all of which are answered by other users. To contact the WordPress team for assistance or questions, you will be charged to send in a question. Also, WordPress is not user friendly. You must access multiple screens before you can reach your landing page. I ended up dropping my WordPress site for another brand and I have never been happier! I would not recommend WordPress unless you are a skilled programmer; and at that point why would you settle for WordPress? **Recommendations to others considering WordPress.org:** I would recommend using WordPress only if you have a good understanding of website coding. However, if you have these skills I believe there are better venues to use than WordPress. Be aware that any support from the site admins costs money other than participation in the community forums. **What problems is WordPress.org solving and how is that benefiting you?** I was creating a website with a blog feature, consistent information, and a web store for a client who had a preexisting preference for WordPress but had no technological experience. I worked with the WordPress site diligently before deciding to change to a host I had more experience with. At that point the site progressed quickly and the finished product was amazing! I cannot say that I have realized any benefits of using WordPress. ### 28. I work for a tiny nonprofit, and when they hire someone after me, it will be very difficult for the new person to get used to the set up.
