Wordfence is the best security plugin we have tried as it is the most compatible to our needs. The free version offers features that are already enough to security a wordpress website. It has firewall options, rate limiting features, malware scanners and removal and even notifies you of unwanted behaviors and files within your wordpress site. The best thing is its live traffic option, in which it can show you the visitors to your site, especially the one's trying to hack your login page, showing its ip, and whether the one trying to access is a bot or human. 1. Lightweight (as long as you disable live feed)

2. Free version is already fully featured, which includes, firewall, rate limiter, malware scanner, ip blocker and so on.

3. Notifies you of outdated plugins and even notifies you of undesirable executions within your site.

4. Hides wordpress version to avoid bots specifically attacking wordpress websites.

Wordfence Security is a great plugin. The many features available allow you to monitor traffic on your pages, block suspicious users and even improve the performance of your site.

It is extremely popular (more than 2 million downloads) which, in addition to having different features to monitor the security status of the site, also provided to speed it up with the cache option.

After activating the plugin, a menu dedicated to the WordPress Dashboard will be added. I like the constant notifications and warnings of Wordfence, whether its an outdated plugin, a malicious file or any other kind of malware and virus threat. It also gives you the ability to rate limit visitors accessing your site especially bad bots, bad ips and others, especially for your login, registration pages. FIrst: Lightweight! Just disable the real time option because that eats up resources when you are on a shared hosting and if you do not really need that feature.

Secondly: DDOS protection is amazing. Also has rate limiting settings you can adjust to your own preference.

Lastly: Malware scanning and deletion is good. Also add the notifications it gives you and also the scanning of outdated plugins and malicious files. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
