What I like best about WinMerge is that it provides the perfect set of features for my use case. I very often use the tool to view diffs between files of structured data such as XML or JSON, and it's moved block detection, highlighting of changes, and being able to ignore whitespace differences lets me visualize the important differences between two files. I like that it lets me do diffs on files, but also do diffs on any text I paste into the tool on the fly. But best of all is the price, as it is an open-source free-to-use diff and merge tool for Windows. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com. What do you dislike about winmerge? One minor gripe I have with WinMerge is that its user interface could be prettier and a bit more modern, as it looks like a Windows XP era application and the toolbar icons are a bit dated. I also dislike the default font Courier, and always change it to Consolas just after installing. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com. Recommendations to others considering winmerge: WinMerge is free and open-source, so there is no reason not to try it first before buying another tool if you need a file diff / merge tool for Windows. I use WinMerge to view differences between application configuration files in different software lifecycle environments in JSON or XML format, and move or merge those differences with the easy to use interface to copy differences from one file to another. I use winmerge a lot for reviewing the code changes in the large files. Winmerge has a support for upto 3 concurrent window viewing at the same time. We can also use different format of input files to view, modify the code. It is really useful for those who primarily works on the large text files to track the changes. Being able to compare folders and files, quickly identify differences in a very simple to understand visual interface, and then merge the required changes into a final version. It helps me identifying changes made to multiple files of complex project, being able to see differences between current version and the desired baseline both at file and file contents level. I liked the fact that it was free, as I had recently switched roles and was unable to use my comparison software I was used to. This product filled the need I had (to compare large files) perfectly fine. Although it was not as polished as other tools, it got the job done and displayed the results in an easy to read fashion. The compare results are not nearly as polished as the other (paid ) products that I was used to. I use it for tesitng coding changes, both the actual code differences and also the data differences coming out as a result of the coding changes. We are using winmerge for code comparison to ensure it contains only the required code for particular change requests and Jira stories. It supports folder comparison, a very time-saving feature provided by winmerge; it will simultaneously compare all changed files. Best thing is it is open source.
