What do you like best about Westlaw?
There are some great features on Westlaw that require appropriate discussion.
Westsearch Plus is a feature that helps you to address legal research questions by simply typing such questions into the global search box.
There are two features of Plus that require some attention. Synopisis provides users with short summaries of cases in the search results, which saves users from having to bring up and skim the entire doument. The second relevant feature is "Filters" which allow users to narrow search results down by jurisdiction, content type, date, etc.
A favorite feature of mine was Quick Check, in which you upload your brief to their database to find out if you hit all the relevant authority and, if not, what relevant authority your research may have missed.
Quick Check may be used to analyze the Briefs of opposing counsel to see what cases your competition missed, helpful use of this great tool. There is also Quick Check Judicial. This feature permits users to upload several briefs and then compare said briefs to each other. Again, the feature will show what each brief has missed.
There is a feature called Litigation Analytics, which seems geared for practicing attorneys, but can be used by students preparing for job interviews, that provides data on judges, attorneys, firms, etc. to help practicing attorneys build case strategy.
KeyCite, is another favorite, the Overruling Risk feature warns you when the law that you are citing has been undermined.
WestLaw also has feature that allow you to compare statutes and regulations to clarify how such have evolved or , as the case may be, otherwise changed over time.
One of my favorite features is on the sign in page, the same tells you what you were searching last, which is helpful if you were interrupted or got up from your computer for a stretch. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
What do you dislike about Westlaw?
Westlaw, Lexis, or any legal research platform becomes more intuitive as you use it. While I used Westlaw in Law School, and some courts prefer it, any evaluation of Westlaw really turns on how often the user used it. For example, as a regular user I can fairly state that the interface takes some time getting used to. There are some other weak points that mostly relate to the interface, but as getting used to a Legal Research platform's interface is more or less subjective, I will spare you the details.
