Cost-Saving, Centralized Storage—But a Steep Learning Curve for New Users **Rating:** 3.0/5.0 stars **Reviewed by:** Brian N. | Cybersecurity Engineer, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.) **Reviewed Date:** June 23, 2026 **What do you like best about VMware vSAN?** VMware vSAN is greatly advantageous because it reduces storage costs and simplifies everything for the user and administrator by providing a centralized platform to manage all. **What do you dislike about VMware vSAN?** The learning curve may be a bit too much for learners and this creates a barrier between newbies and mid-well seasoned personnel who may need to collaborate. **What problems is VMware vSAN solving and how is that benefiting you?** Traditionally, you had to buy separate, complicated storage hardware and networking gear to keep your data safe. Managing all of that often required special training and a completely different dashboard. With vSAN running inside VMware vSphere, you can manage both your storage and your virtual machines (VMs) from the same screen. That consolidation can save money on hardware and also save you time day to day. ### 2. It's also proven to be reliable. **What do you dislike about VMware vSAN?** The biggest downside is mainly the cost. Previous platforms just had the hardware cost but with the licensing requirements for vSAN, it really needs to perform well and hit the brief within budget which isn't a given. **What problems is VMware vSAN solving and how is that benefiting you?** Having the unified storage. Adding a new host or more storage is relatively straight foward and is then immediately visible to other hosts and devices across the storage network. ### 3. Need to buy a new device to enlarge **Recommendations to others considering VMware vSAN:** You have no reason not to use it.
