## VMware NSX Reviews
  ### 1. Powerful Micro-Segmentation and Fast Network Provisioning with VMware NSX

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Devansh B. | Associate Software Engineer, Computer Software, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** July 28, 2026

**What do you like best about VMware NSX?**

What I like best about VMware NSX is its powerful network virtualization and security capabilities, especially features like micro-segmentation, which improve security by around 45 to 55% by isolating workloads at a granular level; it also simplifies network management across 100+ virtual machines by abstracting networking from hardware, reducing manual configuration effort by nearly 30 to 40%, and enabling faster provisioning of networks in minutes instead of hours, making the infrastructure more flexible, secure, and scalable.

**What do you dislike about VMware NSX?**

What I dislike about VMware NSX is that it has a steep learning curve, especially for teams new to software defined networking, and initial setup or troubleshooting can take 25 to 35% more time compared to traditional networking solutions; it can also be relatively expensive to scale, and deep configurations like micro-segmentation and firewall policies require strong expertise, which may slow down adoption and increase operational complexity in the early stages.

**What problems is VMware NSX solving and how is that benefiting you?**

VMware NSX solves the problem of complex and hardware-dependent networking by abstracting network functions into software, allowing us to manage routing, switching, and security in a centralized way, which reduces manual configuration effort by around 40 to 50% and speeds up network provisioning from hours to just minutes; it also enables micro-segmentation that improves security by nearly 50%, helps isolate 100+ workloads efficiently, and minimizes the risk of lateral threats, making the overall infrastructure more secure, scalable, and easier to manage.

  ### 2. Secure Multi-Tenant Isolation with Micro-Segmentation and Network Virtualization

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Information Technology and Services | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** July 31, 2026

**What do you like best about VMware NSX?**

Micro-segmentation and network virtualization that let us isolate tenants logically without re-architecting physical network hardware—key for running a secure multi-tenant private cloud where each client needs strict traffic isolation.

**What do you dislike about VMware NSX?**

Steep learning curve and operational complexity layered on top of vSphere/VCF—troubleshooting micro-segmentation policies across many tenants demands specialized expertise, and Broadcom's licensing changes add further uncertainty to long-term cost planning.

**What problems is VMware NSX solving and how is that benefiting you?**

NSX solves tenant network isolation without needing separate physical hardware per client—giving us micro-segmentation and consistent security policy enforcement across a multi-tenant private cloud. This benefits us by scaling secure network segmentation logically rather than through costly physical re-architecture

  ### 3. Tight Integration, Powerful Security

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Brian O.

**Reviewed Date:** November 05, 2025

**What do you like best about VMware NSX?**

I have been using VMware NSX for five years primarily for microsegmentation, and I achieve significant advantages such as Zero Trust security. I particularly like the tight integration of VMware NSX with every virtual machine, which enhances its functionality. Furthermore, the ability to monitor traffic effectively is another aspect I appreciate about VMware NSX. These features collectively enhance my network management capabilities and contribute to a more secure and efficient virtual environment.

**What do you dislike about VMware NSX?**

I find misconfigurations to be an issue with VMware NSX, which can lead to disruptions or unexpected behavior in the network. Additionally, the initial setup was not easy, posing challenges and requiring a steep learning curve for my team.

**What problems is VMware NSX solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I use VMware NSX for microsegmentation to achieve Zero Trust, benefiting from its tight integration with every VM and traffic monitoring capabilities.

  ### 4. It is definitely amazing if you can pay it

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Oscar F. | Network Operation Center Analyst, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** April 22, 2025

**What do you like best about VMware NSX?**

What I like the most about VMware NSX is the ability to integrate with a wide range of third-party solutions, as well as its support for multi-cloud scenarios, make it an adaptable tool for enterprises seeking to establish a unified, secure, and scalable network infrastructure. Another key advantage of NSX is its central management console, which reduces the difficulty of administering such a distributed environment.

**What do you dislike about VMware NSX?**

It would be the expense; the NSX can be a major investment, particularly for smaller enterprises or those with limited resources. The cost of license, hardware requirements, and ongoing maintenance can quickly add up, especially when deploying across several sites or cloud environments.

**What problems is VMware NSX solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Currently I'm doing my own project and definitely is providing a great help

  ### 5. Long jurney from NSX-V to NSX-T

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Pawel P. | Solutions Architect, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** October 08, 2024

**What do you like best about VMware NSX?**

Definitely the features it offers around security - distributed firewall, IPS/IDS in a distributed form are making the job with virtualized environments.

**What do you dislike about VMware NSX?**

The Load Balancer functionality and the changes around native and LB are quite distrucive as the vision is chaning every few weeks. That makes it a real pain from planning perspective, especially if your environmen heavility depends on this feature or it's a main reason why you buy NSX.
Additionally the DFW as an addon after broadcom acqusition is a joke! It should be part of the core license!

**What problems is VMware NSX solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Security with microsegmentation without the need to physically isolate different kind of workloads was a breakthrough for our environment. This allowed to save significant amount of money on IT infrastructure.

  ### 6. Robust Network Virtualization, But With a Steep Learning Curve

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Anirudha B. | Research Assistant, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** August 21, 2024

**What do you like best about VMware NSX?**

The micro-segmentation capabilities are particularly impressive, allowing for detailed control over security policies down to the individual VM level. This has significantly enhanced our security posture.

NSX scales well with our growing infrastructure needs. Whether adding new hosts or deploying complex networking topologies, NSX handles the load with minimal issues.

Seamless integration with other VMware products like vSphere and vCenter is a big plus. It makes managing our virtual environment more unified and streamlined.

**What do you dislike about VMware NSX?**

The initial setup and configuration can be quite complex, requiring a steep learning curve. Even with a strong background in networking, it took our team some time to get fully comfortable with all the features.

NSX is on the pricier side, and while it delivers value, smaller organizations might find it hard to justify the investment.

VMware’s support is generally good, but there have been instances where resolution times were slower than expected, especially for more complex issues.

VMware's customer support is generally responsive and knowledgeable, but the resolution times for complex issues can sometimes be slower than expected, frustrating during critical situations.

**What problems is VMware NSX solving and how is that benefiting you?**

VMware NSX has created a flexible and secure network environment for running our CAD tools used in chip design and testing. One of the key challenges we faced was ensuring that our network could handle the high-performance requirements of these tools while maintaining strong security protocols. NSX’s micro-segmentation and virtual networking capabilities allowed us to isolate different stages of the design process, ensuring that each part of the workflow was secure and optimized for performance.

The primary benefit has been the ability to scale our network resources on demand to meet the intensive computational needs of chip design. This flexibility has significantly reduced downtime and improved our ability to test and iterate on designs quickly. Additionally, NSX’s security features have given us peace of mind, knowing that our sensitive design data is well-protected throughout the process.

  ### 7. VMware NSX: A rock solid network and security virtualization solution

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Philipp S. | Solution Architect, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**What do you dislike about VMware NSX?**

Complexity of initial installation / implementation
The quality and time of VMware support could be improved.
Some features or troubleshooting steps require API access skils as the GUI lacks some aspects.

**What problems is VMware NSX solving and how is that benefiting you?**

-	Our customers are often companies in the manufacturing industry. Users work on complex and sensitive projects. The data must be highly protected against theft. Microsegmentation and other NSX security features are critical for these platforms.
-	Working with external partners: Our customers often involve third-party vendors who are responsible for small parts of large projects. Microsegmentation allows virtual desktops to be hosted on the same network.
-	Work with critical public sector customers, such as fire departments or city police dispatch systems, that require maximum security for Internet-facing deployments.
-	Protect legacy applications with weaker security architecture by deploying Identity-based firewall on top of micro-segmentation and distributed firewall. This allows to reduce the risk for these applications by allowing only certain users/virtual desktops to access these application servers.
-	Performance + Security by using the same Layer 2 network. Our customers run some network latency sensitive applications. For example, putting an SQL server on a separate network from the virtual desktops reduces performance by a two digit percentage. By leveraging microsegmentation, we can use one large Layer 2 NSX overlay network for virtual desktops and application servers and provide security with microsegmentation.
-	Performance benefits of DPUs (Data processing units): DPUs can offload the Distributed Firewall from the ESXi host and improve application performance of virtual desktops.
-	Easier multi-tenancy options: The same ESXi hosts can be used for different Horizon pods using NSX overlay networking and multi-tenancy.
-	Cost-effective solution to avoid hardware firewall for small robo/edge sites by using NSX
-	Easy flexible setup of a VDI by day compute by night solution by using NSX
- Great loadbalancing functionality for application servers using AVI / NSX Advanced loadbalancer

  ### 10. A pillar for the Private Cloud... and still misunderstood

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Waldemar P. | Technology Evangelist & Enterprise/Solution/Consultant Architect, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** June 05, 2024

**What do you like best about VMware NSX?**

Cloud is not a physical place; It is an operational model. And behind the Cloud operation model, there is automation.

Talking about Cloud without considering network automation (and even security) leaves our "three-legged chair" (computing, storage, and network) without achieving its objective.

And that integrated a stack like VMware Cloud Foundation, which even allows the model to be replicated in Hyperscalers (VMC-A, AVS, GCVE, OCVS), not only simplifies the Day 0 operation, but also Day 2.

**What do you dislike about VMware NSX?**

Having a console that allows you to coordinately manage the different VMware Cloud environments (VCF, VMC-A, AVS, GCVE, OCVS) would be desirable (as was the NSX+ approach). Firstly for Networking elements, in a second stage extended to Security (vDefend and vDefend with ATP).

**What problems is VMware NSX solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Create a true VMware Cloud, including Networking and Security elements.

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Banking | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** August 21, 2022

**What do you like best about VMware NSX?**

With VMware environments (vSphere) the easiest and most comprehensive solution to add networking functions (from L2 up to L7) such as logical switching, routing, DNS, DHCP, Firewall, and Load Balancing AND Security functions, such as Firewall, ATP, NDR, with zero trust approach.

**What do you dislike about VMware NSX?**

It is the best on vSphere infra. other hypervisors are not supported (HyperV) but KVM yes. There are also possibilities to use it on bare metal servers.
It would be nice if the AVI will be embedded into NSX completely.

**What problems is VMware NSX solving and how is that benefiting you?**

In an enterprise corporate, there are multiple teams: such as the infra team, VMware team, and network/security team. If you want to and a new VLAN, then you need to pass your request through all the 3 teams.
With NSX, all of the tasks can be done in a single one platform: end-to-end.

  ### 39. High Level Orchestration with NSX

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Bobby V. | Network Engineer, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** November 01, 2020

**What do you like best about VMware NSX?**

The most valuable benefit it's brought to the organization is the ability to monitor all the networking devices from a single panel. NSX really simplifies management and makes configurations at scale a breeze.

**What do you dislike about VMware NSX?**

A high level of expertise is needed for NSX to be designed properly so that it doesn't bring down the whole system when a single component fails.

**Recommendations to others considering VMware NSX:**

NSX is a great product once it's fully set up and you get used to it. It does help to reduce both CapEx and OpEx in the long term but the switch to NSX and adaptation are not very seamless and it might take quite some time. For all the people considering NSX, I recommend hopping on the bandwagon as long as you have business needs that you think NSX might meet. The product is still new and needs to evolve. That will happen much easier if more people embrace new technologies despite the learning curve that usually comes with adopting them.

**What problems is VMware NSX solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We mainly use NSX for high-level orchestration and load balancing. The system provides very good features for redundancy and enables us to have a solid infrastructure that will make the business continuity plan to get in fifth gear very quickly if need be.

  ### 40. Transformative Data Center Technology

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Nikhil A. | Windows Administrator, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** October 30, 2020

**What do you like best about VMware NSX?**

It is transformative, continues to evolve and pushes the current boundaries in the Data Center networking space. Prior to NSX-T Data Center, no one was truly doing network function virtualization. VMware introduced an entirely new way to think about networking and they have continue building on top of that. Also, the product allows you to scale to accommodate for growth but doesn't hamstring you if you decide you want to pivot a different direction as your needs change.

**What do you dislike about VMware NSX?**

I can't think of anything about the product I dislike. I wish it was in more places :) I see a real use case for it in the whitebox switching arena as well as routing.

**What problems is VMware NSX solving and how is that benefiting you?**

In becoming a VMware organization, the logical question was how do we secure east west traffic between servers? Best practice is to put it closest to the source and that made NSX-T Data Center the logical choice as it does it at the hypervisor level before the packets even hit the wire. The second conversation was how can we increase flexibility and speed to implement networks. By utilizing the routing capabilities of NSX-T it gave us the ability to route within the VMware environment and prevent unnecessary hair-pinning of traffic. It also positioned us for multi-tenancy as we expand services outside of simply IT.
