This product integrates with vCenter as a plugin allowing to manage the different sites to recover. The product depends on VM replication. The replication can be done using third party SRA (Site recovery agents) that handle the Storage replication, the downside is the fact that is requires the HW storage to be compatible on both sites for replication to happen. As an alternative to Hardware replication, there is a builtin VM replication mechanism, although slower, but cheaper and working as well. The product is so complete that allows to perform recovery simulation without any service disruption. Multiple recovery plans are also possible, allowing partial or full recovery. **What do you dislike about VMware Live Recovery (VLR)?** The fact that third party SRAs may not supported and production migrations may be delayed waiting for storage vendor to make new compatible versions available. **Recommendations to others considering VMware Live Recovery (VLR):** Works as a vCenter plugin, makes adoption fast, easy to protect VMs and create recovery plans, multiple recovery plans can coexist. No longer requires windows VM to install SRM, New verisons make it available in a Photon OS-based appliance, external DB dependencies was also removed, embedded vPostgres database is available in the appliance ready to go. Make sure if you use Storage replication that all sites have replication working properly and that the Storage is on Vmware SRM HCL. **What problems is VMware Live Recovery (VLR) solving and how is that benefiting you?** With Site Recovery Manager we are able to add VMs to recovery plans automatically and create recovery plans according to the required scenario. ### 19. The hardware itself is rock solid, reliable, and runs like a beast. This converged systems have demonstrated read VM IOPS well into the 200,000 range across 75 VMs at one time with no performance hit on the servers. V-center integration with Datrium nodes and the UI are very easy to use. Network configuration to the V-center is not too difficult. **What do you dislike about VMware Live Recovery (VLR)?** VM restores from snapshots are very fast, but recovering files from a snapshot can be a little complicated. Right now only windows files are easily recovered from standard NTFS disks. Datrium has it's own VSS agent that currently only works with MS SQL and Exchange servers. Database are file level recovered and require a DBA to restore them into the SQL server. Linux systems using LVM do have file level restore. The entire disk must be restored to a working linux VM so files can be restored. Crash consistant restores of the snapshots work fine. **Recommendations to others considering VMware Live Recovery (VLR):** Since this device is able to provide storage and crash consistant snapshot backups, be sure to plan amount of needed storage accordingly. Be sure to look at the usable physical storage, and not the usable effective storage when calculating the amount of storage needed. Also consider the additional compute resources needed for the magic to happen with this device. Expect about a 15% CPU usage increase on each host to allow the software to de-dupe and compress. A lot of the work is done in RAM and NVME or SSD pools of drives. Be sure to have Datrium Engineering review your VM environment to be sure to have enough CPU, RAM and high speed storage for the Datrium system to work in. Of course good networking is needed to connect the hosts to the Datrium. 10GB redundant connections work well. expect two 10GB and two 1GB connections per node. Networking is IP based, so it isn't too difficult to configure. **What problems is VMware Live Recovery (VLR) solving and how is that benefiting you?** We have converged storage and back up onto the Datrium system. Storage I/O speed is faster than any storage we have used to date. Deduplication and compression is so fast, it is hard to measure any lag. ### 26. The Datrium solution replaced it with 10x the storage and much faster performance. ### 27. In a world where data is key it is nice to have someone help me access that data in the simplest way possible. **What do you dislike about VMware Live Recovery (VLR)?** I wish it was a little more cost effective, but other than that it is a great product. **Recommendations to others considering VMware Live Recovery (VLR):** I would love to implement it at my current job but we are not there yet. Cloud is still a scary word in my organization. **What problems is VMware Live Recovery (VLR) solving and how is that benefiting you?** We were having issues with backups and data storage solutions that would help us minimize cost of storage size and administrative time. It would be great if it can also come up with an integrated Onprem product with Azure stack. **What problems is VMware Live Recovery (VLR) solving and how is that benefiting you?** Currently I am not using it as part of my assignments. However I feel having a single service that could abstract data life cycle management across cloud platforms is really beneficial. ### 30. I have mostly worked on host based replication. **What do you dislike about VMware Live Recovery (VLR)?** I somehow feel the product is unfinished it could have been better. Everytime I have faced any issues with the product and contacted the support the only solution I got is to reconfigure the entire setup. Many times there would be data missing from the dr site and data had to be replicated from the beginning and other times the data at dr would be there but the check sum had to happen which would take time till the new data gets replicated into dr site **What problems is VMware Live Recovery (VLR) solving and how is that benefiting you?** The main objective of SRM is to have a simple Disaster management available within the organisation so thay in case of production failure we can switch over to the dr within less time ### 33. It's easy to configure. You can assign Virtual Machines to be recovered in protection groups based on priority. You can also execute the steps like a dry run without actually performing failover/failback. This helps you validate your configuration before executing it. SRM also takes care of datastore replication from primary site to recovery site and then recovery site to primary site in case of failover situation. **What do you dislike about VMware Live Recovery (VLR)?** Our client asked if we can perform a failover without touching the primary site to prove successful failover and then destroy anything that was created in recovery site without failback. This apparently was not possible using SRM. Besides that, SRM is also a costly product for a small scale project. **What problems is VMware Live Recovery (VLR) solving and how is that benefiting you?** We have around 140 VMs in production site and 260 VMs in recovery site (Non-Production Site). We are using SRM to perform annual DR drill for production site VMs to recovery site. ### 34. I import HDP environment to work on Hadoop. It's better to use this than create a partition for Linux as it leaves very less space for you to work on Windows. **What do you dislike about VMware Live Recovery (VLR)?** It requires a lot of RAM to function properly. In my case, to work on Hadoop, it takes 16 GB RAM for a smooth functioning. Takes a lot of space on your local disk too. Most of my C drive is filled up because of HDP on VMware. **What problems is VMware Live Recovery (VLR) solving and how is that benefiting you?** The benefits are that all your work is stored on air and you can continue working from there on. ### 36.
