The biggest challenge is the limited number of Connects compared to the number needed to apply for jobs. With only a small amount provided each month, freelancers often have to purchase more just to stay competitive, and those credits disappear whether or not a client ever views the proposal. On top of that, the competition is extremely high, with some job posts receiving hundreds of bids. This makes it hard to stand out unless you spend even more Connects to boost your proposal, creating a system that feels pay-to-play. I really like the user interface. It’s very easy to use and navigate it. It’s very easy to find what you’re looking for the AI writer is helpful and does produce some good outputs. I have been on Upwork on and off since 2012 there have been some great things about it over the years and unfortunately honestly the things I like about it are dwindling every year. What do you dislike about Upwork? I do not like the amount of spam and scam jobs that are posted. Also, the jobs that are posted with their religious surveys. I don’t like that they are allowed on the site. They bog it down at times.I also really dislike the drive of hourly rates being so low that it’s difficult to stay working and actually making money. I also do not like their take on contracts and basically from my understanding you once you’re hired through Upwork with somebody you have to say on Upwork with them, depending on the type of contract, of course. I've been using UpWork since just about day 1, and it's been good to me over the early years. There are just so many downsides of UpWork these days. From the astronomical fees and reduced quality of gig listings to the hoops you have to jump through to even speak with a potential client. Not to mention the fact that new freelancers are completely unable to even use the platform lately because of the oversaturation in specific fields. I miss the old days when fees were reasonable and you didn't have to pay through the nose to promote your proposal to even get in front of a client, let alone get hired. Payment from clients is guaranteed and automatic so I don't need to worry about invoicing and chasing money. The fees for writing jobs are fairly high. The limited number of connects you get with the free account is also annoying. I also dislike that freelancers don't have control over closing contracts--I have some old clients who have since left the platform, so those contracts are just sitting there "open" for perpetuity. The biggest issue is something outside of Upwork's control, which is that a lot of the work/clients available are a race to the bottom. Actually landing writing work that pays a reasonable, professional rate can be very difficult because only a small percentage of jobs on the site are in that category, and everyone and their brother is clammoring for them. I don't have one top gripe, but one of the tops on my list - the amount taken from what we earn for the work we provide. We will already be taxed on wages, so this is taken from us before that and while some clients pay well enough that this can be a little easier to stomach when building relationships or excellent clients, this has become fewer and farther from the experience as a freelancer. There are long lists of job postings where the clients either have completely unrealistic expectations, have lengthy requirements, and/or want to pay dirt low rates for the work. Some treat the job posting like a full-time job asking for freelancers to answer a number of questions, attach resumes, and more. We are freelancers, not applying for full-time work. The other gripe I have with the costs incurred as a freelancer is the number of connects, and the cost of connects. The number of connects required to submit proposals for some postings is far too high, and the cost for this and to buy new connects is also. There are many deceptive jobs posted, which I try to flag, but there are so many that should be caught by Upwork and never get posted. For example advertising a higher hourly rate range, but then when the client reaches out, they want to pay a low flat rate, a lower hourly rate that advertised, or who at the end of the job posting writes something like "include what you charge per 1,000 words." The rating and comments part of the process on Upwork is deeply flawed and favors the client, even when the client contradicts work and amounts agreed on between the client and freelancer in Upwork messaging. All of which is made public, and which can impact freelancer ratings on the platform. Customer support is so/so. I once asked if something would change my 100% job success rating and I was told no, with advice on how to handle a situation. I followed the instructions, it did lower my 100% job success rating, and when I reached out to get it fixed, it couldn't be fixed. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
