It seems that recently they're becoming very relying on AI. It's becoming increasingly difficult to talk to a real person in chat or on the phone. This used to be a whole lot simpler. But now they've made it very, very difficult to get to a real person. I've had several experiences where I posted ads for freelancer only for them to be taken down a few minutes later. I had one experience where I kept posting an ad and it was taken down three or four times by of work. I'm not quite sure the reason I could ever find out why. Every time I asked all I get was a canned response that was pretty much useless. I wound up having to have to put way more detail into the doctor description was necessary and even put things in there that weren't necessarily what I needed. But I had to provide way more detail than I should've had to so they had wouldn't be rejected again. I try to be pretty thorough with my ads, but your system just seems to be very critical. I've also had several problems with that work going down and throwing up very errors. Again, though I don't have any proof for this I would probably attribute to an over-reliance on AI. I had pretty good experiences with customer service in the past and even up until it was almost impossible to get a hold of anybody. But your AI is horrible and I would strongly recommend moving away away from so much dependent on it because it's only causing more and more problems. I've even heard about freelancer that have been kicked . One of the people that was kicked off with someone that worked for me. He kept asking for review and what happened but he never got an answer. So unfortunately, I ended up no longer being able to use this guy. I have no idea if it was his fault or just a problem with AI. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com. There also seems to be a lack of proper vetting of contractors: we’ve worked with multiple contractors whose work was atrociously poor, and some lied and acted deceitfully. Many also claim they’re based in the USA, but I’ve been told numerous times by contractors themselves that they use someone else’s ID to fake their profile location. We’ve used Upwork multiple times and have spent thousands of dollars, yet lately the overall quality has felt close to what I’ve seen on other platforms like Fiverr, which are typically far cheaper. You pay for "connects" to bid for work and there's other Upwork freelancers bidding as well. I've noticed the average amount of connects needed for gigs seems to have gone up, so you buy the same amount of connects each month, or whenever you need them, so that's getting more expensive. My BIG PROBLEM with UpWork is the idiotic CloudFlare verification system. A lot of sites use it and it sucks. I can get on the site, sometimes after having to reload the page several times because of CloudFlare, but it never let's my apply for work. NEVER. I've complained, it's the same old answers, clear you browser, cache, blah, blah, blah, which NEVER works. I wasted money because now I have 139 connects on there and I can't use them. It's a gateway to clients, the interface is fairly straightforward and easy to use. It doesn’t block me from applying to U.S. jobs when I’m outside the country, which is important for me as an American who works both domestically and abroad. Any semi-decent job is flooded with bids in under an hour, completely oversaturated and dominated by foreign dev shops posing as local freelancers. Freelancers are fee’d to death in a race to the bottom that has gutted the industry. Fee overload: Freelancer service fee: Up to 15% taken from every payment (hourly, fixed-price, bonuses, Project Catalog—everything). Membership fee: $19.99/month for Freelancer Plus, just to get more Connects and slightly better terms. Connects: $0.15 each to bid on jobs; you only get 10 free/month on Basic or 100 on Plus. Direct Contracts fee: 5% (Basic) or 0% (Plus) even when you bring your own clients. Withdrawal fees: $0.99 for bank transfers, $2 for PayPal, $30–$50 for wire transfers. Customer service has gone from decent to unhelpful. They’ve changed important policies (like deadlines for logged hours) without effectively notifying users. The system is built in a way that can be exploited from both sides. The protections in place often block valid freelancers while con artists find ways around them. Majority of US competitors are low-bidding overseas dev shops with an American “front,” delivering subpar work. If they suspect a bad review, they just cancel the contract so it never shows up their profile. (This isnt speculation, I've been personally contacted and asked to be a front by foreign dev shops several times, and I have personally come in contact with several existing ones.) Freelancers have little to no protection from abusive clients who threaten low reviews to get extra work or pull bait-and-switches by changing project scope mid-job. From a client’s perspective, the experience is mostly neutral-to-positive. From a freelancer’s perspective, it’s blood, sweat, and fees. Every once in awhile Im forced to interact with a platform that is so blatantly exploitative that just hearing the name makes me cringe. Few platforms and organizations have achieved that status in my life and Upwork is at top of the list. There are a lot of jobs and you have a limited number of 'connects' to apply for them. You can buy more connects but being that upwork takes a fee from each contract AND buying more connects costs $$ it feels like upwork is actually making more $$ than I am. They increased their percentage that they take from each writing contract and they have increased the amount of Connects needed to apply for every job because they want freelancers to buy more Connects. As a freelance ghostwriter, this makes it really hard to get paid fairly, especially because a lot of ghostwriting work has decreased because of generative AI-- which is something that Upwork champions.
