## Umbraco Reviews
 ### 1. Highly Customizable, User-Friendly CMS

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Mats S. | System Developer, Computer Software, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** November 10, 2023

**What do you like best about Umbraco?**

I love using Umbraco because it provides an easy-to-set-up platform that offers high customizability, making it a fantastic choice for web development. The myriad possibilities it offers for customization are truly endless, allowing me to tailor my projects precisely to client needs. The user-friendly Backoffice is incredibly well-designed, with a strong focus on the end-user experience, which greatly contributes to client satisfaction. Additionally, the supportive and vibrant community surrounding Umbraco is something I cherish, as it fosters collaboration and continuous learning. Switching to Umbraco from EPiServer, now Optimizely, was a seamless process, enhancing my workflow without issues. Overall, Umbraco’s combination of flexibility, ease of use, and community engagement makes it my top recommendation for other developers.

**What do you dislike about Umbraco?**

I find it inconvenient that you need to create document types through the UI in Umbraco, as it limits a true code-first experience. This approach requires a lot of extra work, which can be cumbersome. However, once I adjusted to it, it became manageable by hooking up document types to auto-generated C# classes for easier coding.

**What problems is Umbraco solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Umbraco provides an easily set up platform with high customizability, a user-friendly Backoffice that keeps clients happy, and a supportive community.

 ### 2. Flexible, User-Friendly CMS That Empowers Content Teams

**Rating:** 3.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Jennifer M. | Marketing Content Coordinator, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** November 16, 2025

**What do you like best about Umbraco?**

Umbraco is flexible and user-friendly, making it easy to update content without needing technical support. Its interface is intuitive, and the CMS provides strong customization options, which help our team tailor pages and workflows to suit our needs. The media library and content organization tools also make managing assets straightforward.

**What do you dislike about Umbraco?**

Some features can feel hidden or unintuitive at first, especially for users who are still learning the platform. Certain tasks like troubleshooting broken content, managing pull content, or adjusting templates, may require extra steps or developer assistance. The occasional system lag or staging downtime can also slow the workflow.

I also don’t like that sometimes when I publish one page to production, other pages that weren’t supposed to go live end up getting published too. It makes the process feel a bit unpredictable.

**What problems is Umbraco solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Umbraco helps streamline content management by making it easy to update pages, organize assets, and keep information consistent across the site. It reduces the need for developer support for everyday tasks, which speeds up publishing and helps me work more efficiently. The structured layout and customizable features also make it easier to maintain branding and ensure content stays accurate and aligned with our workflow.

 ### 3. Friendly and flexible

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Minty B. | Project Manager, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** October 10, 2025

**What do you like best about Umbraco?**

I really like Umbraco because of how incredibly flexible it is, it adapts to a wide range of project needs, whether you're building a simple site or a complex application. Development can move fast thanks to its robust out of the box features, which save time without sacrificing customisation. The diverse ecosystem of packages makes it easy to extend functionality without reinventing the wheel, and for someone new to content management systems, Umbraco is a fantastic learning platform. Its intuitive interface and strong community support make it approachable, while still offering depth for more advanced users.

Umbraco is also very user friendly when it comes to managing content. Adding and editing pages is straightforward, with a clean interface that makes it easy to navigate even for beginners. You can make changes quickly and preview exactly how they'll appear before publishing, which gives you confidence that everything looks just right. This real-time feedback loop is especially helpful when collaborating with clients or stakeholders who want to see updates instantly. It streamlines the content workflow and helps maintain a polished, professional site without unnecessary delays.

**What do you dislike about Umbraco?**

One aspect of Umbraco that I find frustrating is working with nested content. While it's powerful for structuring complex data, it can quickly become overwhelming when there are too many layers buried within each other. Navigating through deeply nested fields to make a simple change often feels tedious and unintuitive, especially when you're trying to maintain clarity across multiple content types. It can slow down the editing process and make it harder to spot where specific content lives, which isn't ideal when you're aiming for efficiency or collaborating with less technical users.

I also wish you could see exactly what changes were made when reviewing the history of the page.

**What problems is Umbraco solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Umbraco solves several key problems that often come with managing and building websites. First, it streamlines content management by offering an intuitive interface that makes it easy to create, edit, and organise content without needing deep technical knowledge. This benefits me by saving time and reducing the learning curve, especially when working with clients or teams who aren't developers. It also solves the problem of rigid development workflows, its flexibility and out the box features allow for rapid prototyping and customisation, which means I can deliver solutions faster. Plus, with a wide range of community built packages, we don’t have to build everything from scratch, which boosts efficiency and encourages experimentation. Overall, Umbraco helps us work smarter, not harder, while still producing high quality, scalable websites.

 ### 4. Flexible, .NET-Based Solution with Room for Improvement

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Tomas V. | Freelance Digital Transformation Consultant

**Reviewed Date:** December 04, 2025

**What do you like best about Umbraco?**

I like how Umbraco is .NET based, which fits perfectly with our existing technology stack since we already have .NET developers. This makes integration seamless and allows us to stay close to our tech stack. I appreciate that Umbraco is free to use, which makes it highly budget-friendly for our company. The platform is also easily extendable and completely configurable, allowing us to tailor it to our specific needs without the excessive clutter we experienced with systems like WordPress. Moreover, the initial setup was quite easy, facilitating a smooth transition from our previous system. Additionally, we have successfully built an API into Umbraco to sync properties with our website, a feature that works very well for us.

**What do you dislike about Umbraco?**

I find the editor in Umbraco to be a bit cumbersome to use. It presents a learning curve, which can be quite challenging, especially for those unfamiliar with the system. Additionally, it's problematic that you don't always visually see the results of your changes immediately when dealing with custom elements. This lack of immediate feedback can slow down the workflow and complicate the editing process.

**What problems is Umbraco solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I use Umbraco for managing our website with multiple users; it's configurable and fits our .NET tech stack, being free and budget-friendly compared to WordPress.

 ### 5. Easy to Use with Room for UI Improvements

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Sadie C.

**Reviewed Date:** November 12, 2025

**What do you like best about Umbraco?**

I appreciate how Umbraco simplifies the process of sharing benefit information with employees, providing easy access to information on the web. Its user-friendly nature really stands out, making it a platform that is easy to use, which is crucial for efficiency. I love that it allows the creation of content cards and my ability to easily create links to documents that can be shared, adding a convenient layer of functionality for my tasks. The overall integration of these features into our workflow has made the dissemination of information seamless, improving communication with employees.

**What do you dislike about Umbraco?**

I find that Umbraco could be more user-friendly, especially when building new content cards. Adding more instructional text would greatly enhance the usability and ease of use during content creation.

**What problems is Umbraco solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I use Umbraco to provide employees with access to benefit information online. It's easy to create content cards and share documents, making information dissemination efficient and straightforward.

 ### 6. Easy to Use and Great for Brand Consistency, But Requires Lots of Clicking

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Megan S. | Marketing & Business Development Manager, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** October 14, 2025

**What do you like best about Umbraco?**

We're just launching our new website with Umbraco, so we're learning everything it can do. Initially, it's allowing our employees to create a standardized look for our product offerings. Using the various modules, we can maintain our brand throughout all pages. It's very easy to use and has straightforward navigation.

**What do you dislike about Umbraco?**

There's a lot of clicking to add various content pieces to the flexible content areas. We also have lots of products (which are pages), and there's no easy way to search or find the pages.

**What problems is Umbraco solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Our previous platform is being phased out, so we needed to transition to a new platform. The platform we needed needed to be able to talk to HubSpot, our current CMS (netForum) and handle various roles of people.

 ### 7. Effortless Content Management with Umbraco

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Ryan S.

**Reviewed Date:** November 19, 2025

**What do you like best about Umbraco?**

I love how easy it is to use Umbraco, especially when it comes to editing content and refreshing website edits. The platform allows me to seamlessly navigate different pages for content revision, making the entire process efficient and straightforward. I'm delighted with my experience using Umbraco, and I find that its user-friendly interface significantly simplifies managing content on our website. The ease of use is undoubtedly a standout feature that enhances my overall workflow.

**What do you dislike about Umbraco?**

I found it difficult to create an account with Umbraco.

**What problems is Umbraco solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I find Umbraco makes content editing and refreshing easy, allowing me to efficiently navigate for content revisions.

 ### 8. Umbraco is usually user friendly

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Matthew T. | Digital Systems Analyst, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** May 14, 2025

**What do you like best about Umbraco?**

I love that it is so straight forward, it's easy to build new pages, forms and configure them in a way that looks and feels slick for an end user. There are many points of integration that our developers utilise. I use Umbraco every single day and the support offered by Prodo is very thorough.

**What do you dislike about Umbraco?**

I don't like that it can sometimes feel restrictive. Whether that's due to how it's locked down by our developers who provide our environment I'm unsure but the way in which some of the repairs and diagnostics pathways can be difficult to configure.

**What problems is Umbraco solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We develop our resident self-service portal and application through Umbraco. As a social housing provider it is important that we have the flexibility from Umbraco to reflect any changes necessary due to internal changes that happen with very little notice

 ### 9. Very Easy to Use and Straightforward

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Automotive | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** February 11, 2026

It’s very easy to use and straightforward.

**What do you dislike about Umbraco?**

It can be difficult at times when I want to reorder pages.

**What problems is Umbraco solving and how is that benefiting you?**

It helps me upload all kinds of content—such as blog posts and photos—to my website.

 ### 10. User-Friendly and Easy to Navigate, but Sometimes Too Restrictive

**Rating:** 3.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Automotive | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** February 12, 2026

**What do you like best about Umbraco?**

It's easy to use and navigate. It is very user friendly.

**What do you dislike about Umbraco?**

It's sometimes too restrictive. Moving things on a page can prove tricky.

**What problems is Umbraco solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I currently don't experience any issues with Umbraco.

 ### 11. Umbraco CMS: Great Developer Experience, but Challenging Upgrades

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Information Technology and Services | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** November 19, 2025

**What do you like best about Umbraco?**

It is very easy to understand and build backend features. Developer experience improved. Umbraco community is now stronger. Umbraco API feature is good. Block List and Block Grid are good features.

**What do you dislike about Umbraco?**

Upgrade effort is very difficult. Need a better plan to migrate from older version to newer version. Lack of packages.

**What problems is Umbraco solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Umbraco CMS solving content management difficulty.
Umbraco provides a flexible, easy-to-use CMS that simplifies content management and custom development.

 ### 12. Easy to Navigate, But Formatting Needs Improvement

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Rebekah F. | Marketing Executive, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** October 29, 2025

**What do you like best about Umbraco?**

Easy Navigation makes it easy to find what you need

**What do you dislike about Umbraco?**

Formatting can be clunky and it often hard to use in the back end for basic users

**What problems is Umbraco solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Allows us to add all of the content we need for our business

 ### 13. User-friendly but more suitable for smaller sites

**Rating:** 3.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Higher Education | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** April 23, 2025

**What do you like best about Umbraco?**

I am a superuser managing over 200 editor accounts, who make changes on our site and then I approve the workflow. The user interface is straightforward and most editors are very happy with the day-to-day editing. We have an external team of developers who customise a lot of the features for us, and these usually work well and the editors find them easy to use.

**What do you dislike about Umbraco?**

Our site is extremely large with over a thousand nodes and hundreds of users to manage. I feel Umbraco was designed to handle smaller sites, as user management and searching this many nodes is a bit clunky. It also seems to be a bit tricky to integrate with other systems, but this is done by a third party for us, so I cannot comment on how easily this is done, only that communication between Umbraco and other systems is often unpredictable, whether it's via XML or an API.

**What problems is Umbraco solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Our content is managed by a large number of editors. They find Umbraco easy to use and workflow management is quite straightforward.

 ### 14. Intuitive and User-Friendly, But Some Clunky Elements

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Hospital & Health Care | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** October 23, 2025

**What do you like best about Umbraco?**

User friendly, and quite intuitive to use

**What do you dislike about Umbraco?**

Elements can be clunky at times but easy to learn.

**What problems is Umbraco solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Helping employees manage their own web content - allows me to publish as and when I need to

 ### 15. Perfect base for startup projects

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Automotive | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** May 12, 2025

**What do you like best about Umbraco?**

Umbraco has proven to be an excellent foundation for the startup project I’ve been working on. It was quick to set up and easy to implement, even with a custom architecture, which made it ideal for getting the project off the ground fast.

One of the biggest advantages is that it's built on the latest Microsoft technologies, which means I can immediately take advantage of everything new in the .NET ecosystem.

It’s a full-featured CMS, giving me flexibility both for frontend development and for building APIs, without needing to rely on multiple tools or frameworks. The integration with Visual Studio is also impressive—Umbraco exposes all its elements in code, making development smooth and efficient. It handles everything from content management to user authentication and security, which saved us a lot of time early on.

Its lightweight runtime and small RAM footprint also make it incredibly fast, which is ideal for lean infrastructure in a startup environment.

Umbraco is an all-in-one platform that scales with you as the project grows. The Umbraco team works incredibly hard behind the scenes—they’re constantly improving the platform and genuinely care about making it the best CMS out there, with responsive and helpful customer support.

Summary – What I like about Umbraco:
Built on the latest Microsoft/.NET technologies
Strong support for both frontend and API development
Seamless integration with Visual Studio
Exposes all CMS elements directly in code
Built-in user and security management
Fast performance with minimal RAM usage
A scalable, all-in-one platform for growing projects

**What do you dislike about Umbraco?**

One downside is how frequently Umbraco changes its codebase. Code written for previous versions doesn’t always carry over cleanly, which can make upgrades or reuse more difficult. Despite that, it’s still a very capable CMS for anyone working in the Microsoft ecosystem.

**What problems is Umbraco solving and how is that benefiting you?**

My project is a system with multiple administrators managing content and data, while frontend users interact with the results on a daily basis. Umbraco turned out to be a perfect fit because it comes with a built-in member system that supports both admin users and frontend members out of the box. This saved a lot of development time and reduced complexity. Additionally, querying and filtering results was straightforward thanks to Umbraco’s flexible content structure and support for custom logic. It allowed us to deliver a functional, user-friendly system quickly, with minimal overhead and solid performance.

 ### 16. Copy Paste Function Makes Workflow Effortless

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Airlines/Aviation | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** November 19, 2025

**What do you like best about Umbraco?**

The copy paste function makes its really easy to create new pages quickly.

**What do you dislike about Umbraco?**

Sometimes the formatting is difficult to set, especially when presettings are built in.

**What problems is Umbraco solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Umbraco solves the problem of ease for websites, unlike other tools it requires less training and makes it easy to navigate the site.

 ### 17. Very well done CMS. I think overall is very functional and fast.

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Marketing and Advertising | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** February 04, 2025

**What do you like best about Umbraco?**

It's quite easy to understand and everything is well explained with comments aside of the boxes. The CMS is fast.

**What do you dislike about Umbraco?**

Sometimes it is not perfectly clear where a modification will take action or not, if I modify the order of promotions in the promotions section, if at the same time in the home page - promotion section area - I have a different order set, that change will not take action because it goes in conflict with the "genitor" page, hp.
That is correct! But maybe an error message/or explanatory pop-up would help the user, I guess.

Sometimes the image size for picture suggested are not correctly written/slightly different than what actually would be needed/perfect. (The information displayed on the side of the image boxes I mean).

Sometimes the image in the banners on the top of a landing page is displayed with a dark layer over it, like a fading... and that is not possible to deactivate.

The position of a title and subhead on a banner, is not possible to be moved e.g. top-right/top-left bottm-right/bottom-left. Before, I guess with a previous version of the CMS (or different one) it was possible and was very comfortable to have that, I think.

**What problems is Umbraco solving and how is that benefiting you?**

More than solving problems is helping updating the website in a fast and easy way.

 ### 18. Smart and Developer friendly but not so focused on CMS

**Rating:** 3.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Sapphire B. | Community Volunteer, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 19, 2024

**What do you like best about Umbraco?**

Smart and Developer friendly but not so focused so easy to implement for tech developers etc with lots of easy integration with developer tools etc.

**What do you dislike about Umbraco?**

Not been very user friendly for ease of use as a CMS. taken a while to build out so other tools we use frequently like wordpress have been better.

**What problems is Umbraco solving and how is that benefiting you?**

creating a portal to manage login credentials for a 3D configurator tool we developed bespokely
