Another handy feature is the ability to custom-design each section of your mailings through HTML coding. This allows you to place and set everything exactly as you want it, no relying on preset content cubes that you cannot fully customize. There is a nice little error signal when the code is incorrect beside each line with errors so you can easily identify where the error may be. Useful: HTML codes auto-populate the second half of whatever you're inserting, i.e. when you type it auto-inserts . **What do you dislike about Twilio SendGrid Email API?** However, HTML coding can be difficult and tricky. As mentioned, it auto-populates the ending tag for HTML, so sometimes it puts it where you don't want it, and you must remember to go back and move or delete it. Sometimes it misinterprets things in URL links, particularly the &, and flags it as an error even though there is not one. I'm not super advanced in HTML, so sometimes it's a LOT of trial and error to get something to display correctly. There might be pre-designed building blocks for general/common email sections, but I have never seen them. So if you're not an advanced HTML designer, this can be tricky to use. We have a graphic designer who sets up our new templates, then I typically just copy and paste an old campaign and update the links as necessary, but it still can be a LOT of work. It's mostly user error and lack of training on my end, but still frustrating. And be careful when scheduling--the default is set to schedule for the day AFTER you created/edited the campaign. I had to learn this the hard way when something I scheduled was not delivered as anticipated. That seems counterintuitive to me. An update: Since I wrote my initial review of Sendgrid, it has been acquired by Twilio. The fallout from that is not terrible, but I wouldn't describe it as especially positive either. Prices have increased, and sending from my preferred email client was made more difficult (from a standpoint of having to set up everything again) by ending the ability to use an SMTP username/password and requiring generation and use of API keys instead. On the whole, I still appreciate Sendgrid. I haven't found a better deal for the money for my personal use case (sending op-ed columns to a large list of newspapers three times a week). My impression is that Twilio has added several new features to the service. There are lots of delivery issues caused by their software and support tickets are not replied to in a timely manner. **What do you dislike about Twilio SendGrid Email API?** The reliability of the sendgrid service has gone way down in the last several months. Most recently they had an issue with their connector to Google that started randomly dropping hundreds of messages. They then flagged the e-mail addresses as invalid so they couldn't' be sent to again. There was no way to clear this through their UI so we were just stuck. It wouldn't be as much of a problem if they responded to support requests, but alas, they don't do that very well either... They have outages with their systems almost weekly. We pay a lot of money to send almost 1 Million message a month, and we'd be better off just sending through our own mail servers. The core business of an E-Mail delivery service is to deliver mail reliably, and they can't seem to be able to do that. Go elsewhere with your money. **What do you dislike about Twilio SendGrid Email API?** We are going into a major launch that required us to set up a new, dedicated IP address, Sending Domain, DNS records, etc. I reached out to SendGrid to get help with this process. They offered me Support for a $5,000 fee. The rep on the phone didn't even realize we're already a customer (have been for 4 years) and spoke to us like we were a prospect. When we decided not to go with their implementation package (and instead went with Iterable, which is our ESP) they said they could offer NO support. They wouldn't hop on a call to give me an overview, wouldn't even take the time to send over anything beyond two generic support pages. We just launched our new IP, and it turns out SendGrid has been sending the emails from our other Sending Domain through this new IP. I have no idea this was going to happen – apparently you have to use subusers and IP Pools, but I get an error message every time I try to set up either – and they have now offered no support to help us fix this. Support Tickets take hours or days to get a response on, unless you mark it as a "complete outage." We can't use the support phone number because apparently volume is "too high." I have never been so livid or frustrated with a SaaS company in my life. **Recommendations to others considering Twilio SendGrid Email API:** Support matters. Customer Success matters. And SendGrid doesn't appear to value it at all. Sendgrid does not have the self service monitoring tools to effectively identify and/or stop an attack before the damage to your reputation has been done. **What problems is Twilio SendGrid Email API solving and how is that benefiting you?** Wanted reliable transactional emails to reach our customers inboxes while making sure our email sending was monitored effectively to protect our IP and Domain reputation. Sendgrid is providing a similar set of features from other transactional email providers at a premium cost compared to other providers. We get good access to download historical data to use in our own app, and they have a clean, limited functional dashboard. Where they failed is when we did get exploited when someone hijacked our email script. The exploiter was able to send off more than 400K in emails through our mailscript before any protections kicked in by Sendmail. Our account typically delivers 1000 transactional emails a day, so for any type of reputation protection kick in until 4000 X our daily average went out within 3 hours means they really don't provide any reputation protection. Once they did finally stop queuing the emails, they were unable to remove the emails that had made it through (but not sent yet) to their deferral queue. So we were stuck for the next 72 hours while their servers tried to send spam emails under our account (350k of them) domain. Even though we knew they were bad emails and were already identified. So our IP reputation went from a perfect 100% to 20% over 4 days. Now most of our emails go to junk and we have to start with a brand new IP and rebuild our reputation over the next 6 months. Sendgrid told us it was our responsibility to monitor traffic and that they had notification tools (which we had implemented but didn't notify us of the unusual traffic until it was too late - very limited notification like "you've reached 50% of your monthly quota". Pretty useless when this notification gets sent at 2am on a Sunday). In short, they do not have the capabilities nor consider it their responsibility to protect your IP or Domain reputation. 1. They do not stop a send attack until your reputation has been damaged beyond rehabilitation (pausing sending emails at 10X our daily average to wait for our approval would have stopped this issue immediately). 2. They have no way to stop emails in their deferral queue even though they have been identified as fraudulent (we watched at these known emails took our rep down from 55% to 20% even though we knew they needed to be deleted). 3. They do not see this as their responsibility. Almost all other transactional mail service providers have the ability to add in hard caps to daily email limits and much quicker technical triggers to catch unusual sending activity (most would have caught it before 10000 emails were sent from our IP, instead of waiting until 400000 were queued and sent). ### 34. Managing email notifications in a patient portal. **Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars **Reviewed by:** Jose M. | Chief Technology Officer, Hospital & Health Care, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.) **Reviewed Date:** November 19, 2018 **What do you like best about Twilio SendGrid Email API?** Our favorite feature is the ability to setup a new customer in a minimum period of time, knowing that we don't have to deal ourselves with deriverability, reputation management, etc. Also important is to track whether the email was successfully delivered, rejected, delayed, marked as spam, etc. **What do you dislike about Twilio SendGrid Email API?** It used to be a problem the restriction to create new sub-users. We had several incidents where our customers were waiting to be able to use our program because we reached the amount of sub-users that Sendgrid will allow us to have. It would take from a couple of hours, up to an entire day for us to solve that problem. Our limit is set to a higher value now, so we haven't had that problem in a while. **Recommendations to others considering Twilio SendGrid Email API:** Sendgrid email is a most if you want to let others send email through you and you don't want to deal with the setup of all the infrastructure needed. Also, you have the peace of mind that, if some of your customers start sending spam, they are not going to affect the operation of some other well behave customers. **What problems is Twilio SendGrid Email API solving and how is that benefiting you?** We allow our customers to send email to their customers. We don't want that a rogue customer can affect the operation of other customers. We started with our own SMTP server, but having to maintain it was a resource drag that was not worth the money we could save by handling email ourselves. ### 47. I can send emails in just a few minutes. There's multiple ways to implement it into our Laravel applications (SMTP or the API). We integrated with SMTP - the documentation on setting it up was very straightforward. Took less than 30 minutes. **What do you dislike about Twilio SendGrid Email API?** It's difficult to deal with reporting. The reporting tools have change drastically in the past year and a half. I do like the changes you have made, but the amount of data is reduced to just 3 days and it takes longer to pull the data I need. Biggest complaint: Data is only stored for 3 days. I know it costs a lot of money to keep large amounts of data for clients, but I would like to search at least 1-2 weeks of data for a product I pay monthly. Even if it's just basic data (like sends, opens and clicks). I don't necessarily need all of the other data. **Recommendations to others considering Twilio SendGrid Email API:** SendGrid is very easy to setup and integrate into your existing servers. I can only speak to its transactional sending abilities, but all of our transactional emails have been sent for years without issue. **What problems is Twilio SendGrid Email API solving and how is that benefiting you?** We needed to send transactional emails (password reset, purchase receipts and event reminders). We are able to send these email effortlessly. ### 48. SendGrid's WordPress plugin takes minutes to set up and is completely reliable. The cativity activity installed by the plugin in the WordPress dashboard makes it easy to see that delivery is happening as expected. The plugin makes it easy to verify correct setup and see that my clients are, indeed, receiving a flow of email (even when I am not the recipient). **What do you dislike about Twilio SendGrid Email API?** There's not much I don't like about SendGrid. If there were any room for improvement, it would be simplifying the user interface in the web dashboard. I do sometimes need to dig around to find things. One possible improvement might be to add a way to star or favorite frequently used sections. For instance, I'm typically interested in reviewing existing APIs or generating new ones. Being able to favorite these functions would be faster than digging through several levels of menus. **Recommendations to others considering Twilio SendGrid Email API:** There's never a downside to improved email deliverability. **What problems is Twilio SendGrid Email API solving and how is that benefiting you?** MOst people don't realize how poor mail delivery can be using the default services provided by website hosts. Most of my clients are online to generate leads, and there simply no room for a dropped transactional email or missing contact form enquiries. Using the SendGrid WordPress plugin and SendGrid API simply makes these problems go away. Since adopting the SendGrid mail API, I've had literally zero client complaints about lost transactional emails or undelivered contact form enquiries. ### 49. I was able to get done specificially what I went in to do but I didint find any other interesting tools along the way **Recommendations to others considering Twilio SendGrid Email API:** It would be useful if Send Grid provided more information or promotional suggestions on how else the platform can be applied. For the less educated user I had to jump back to youtube for alot of basic explanations on the use of send grid.
