I've been freelancing for eight years, and Toptal is one step ahead of all other platforms I've tried. They have some of the best clients with exciting and challenging projects. Toptal has a support team for literally anything one can think of. They also have one of the most active and helpful communities I've seen. Some other things that I like are professional development opportunities and ease of receiving payments (you can get a virtual card, order Toptal physical card, or simply transfer money to your account). Salaries are much higher than in any platform I used. Toptal also has a referral program. Thanks to the hard vetting process, there are only high-level professionals in Toptal's network, so my application for a project is not lost in a pile of applications from inexperienced developers. I like the variety of jobs, as a game developer I didn't think I would find a job this fast, but I struck a job in less than a week from joining the platform. The only thing I dislike is that after you land a job, it takes a long time, from when the payment is paid to when you get money in your account. All the coaches, matchers and mentors support you throughout your journey. I don't even receive this level of support from my family members. For the first time, it really feels like someone really has your back. They are not just looking to exploit you. Other freelance platforms try to get the most work done from you with the least possible budget. It's just a race to the bottom on those other platforms. But at Toptal, the core team genuinely have your best interests, and it feels like they want me to succeed and be compensated well for my time and effort. People from the core team are always willing to help you without judgement, and I think THAT is just awesome. No chasing clients for payments - all you need to do is to do the work, and the payments come per schedule. Also, the jobs come to you and it's pretty much always a good match. There's a rather difficult selection process to get onto the platform, but it's worth the effort and, once you're in, you're on a good track. Also, the money flow is extremely convenient and reliable, since all the money comes from a single source, and there's no need to handle each client individually when it comes to payment methods. Positioning our capabilities for the customers/clients and getting hired is the biggest challenge in other remote work/freelancing platforms. After I joined, I was surprised by how much support they actually give and how much weight they lift off of the process of finding good projects. They don't just screen the freelancers but also their clients, so the vast majority of the projects available are high quality. The whole process is very clean and fast. Getting in was stressful, but not otherwordly as many people depict it. And if you are not in US timezone, then it may be a bit harder to find the project that suits you best, but this has nothing to do with Toptal itself. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com. What problems is Toptal solving and how is that benefiting you? Project acquisition is the most significant overhead in freelancing (both my personal experience and also according to the freelancer surveys), and Toptal helps the most exactly in this part. Less risk for the client because freelancers are screened rigorously, and there's a trial period to see if it is a good fit. And for the freelancers, it gives more credibility. Because of Toptal's reputation, it makes it easier to get into high-quality projects compared to just going solo (especially for beginner or less specialized freelancers). Toptal is a platform where freelancers and businesses meet each other without any limitation of geographic boundaries. From a freelancer perspective, I have enjoyed working with different clients via Toptal; this has brought a new dimension to my work life and allowed me to explore other cultural teams around the globe. Like every other remote job platform, Toptal is also evolving, and I see frequent changes to its platform. However, they don't allow a resource to work more than 60 hrs per week (a threshold to avoid burnout). In my opinion, this threshold should be removed as every resource has its own definition of burnout. There are minimal opportunities for freelancers who purely work on databases, but Toptal has tons of jobs in other development technologies. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
