Our accountant recommended it. They'd seen enough Avalara implementations go sideways that they stopped recommending it for companies our size. That endorsement carried weight and it turned out to be accurate. What I like most on a day-to-day basis is that the filing work just doesn't land on my desk anymore. I'm the only accountant at a 80-person SaaS company so I'm covering a lot of ground. Sales tax used to mean pulling transaction data from Stripe, checking product taxability by state, and manually reconciling everything before the 20th. Every month. Taxwire's team handles all of it. I get a notification when something needs my attention and that's maybe once a month if that. The tax team also actually knows SaaS. Product taxability for software is genuinely complicated across states and I'd been nervous about getting it wrong. They classified our products correctly from the start and explained the logic when I asked. That kind of transparency matters when you're the one responsible if something goes wrong. **What do you dislike about Taxwire?** for now there is no negative feedback, we are happy with them. **What problems is Taxwire solving and how is that benefiting you?** The biggest one is time. I was spending the better part of three days every month on sales tax prep. Pulling data, reformatting, checking rates, logging into state portals. It was the most manual thing I did and also one of the highest-stakes. One wrong filing and I'm dealing with a notice, an amended return, and a conversation with my CFO I don't want to have. Taxwire eliminated that workload almost entirely. The filings go out reviewed and accurate. We've registered in four new states since onboarding as we crossed economic nexus thresholds and I haven't had to manage any of it. For an in-house accountant without a tax team behind them, having that coverage is the difference between staying on top of compliance and hoping nobody notices. ### 2. finally switched from avalara. We'd been on Avalara for two years and the implementation had never really finished. There were states we were supposed to be filing in that weren't set up correctly. We had a support ticket open for months with no resolution. The whole thing was supposed to be hands-off and it wasn't even close. A contact referred us to Taxwire and I was skeptical, because at that point I'd heard every vendor pitch about how they were different from Avalara. But we were live and filing correctly in under two weeks. That includes states we'd been trying to get Avalara to set up for months. The tax team handled the whole migration, synced our transaction history, set up the filing schedules, and walked us through anything that needed a decision on our end. I think I had three calls with them total. The support is the other thing. Slack, real people, under an hour. I forwarded a state notice I'd been sitting on because I didn't know what to do with it. Had a response with a clear recommended action within the hour. That's just not something I ever experienced with Avalara. **What do you dislike about Taxwire?** It's a newer platform so there are occasional gaps, mainly on the reporting side. Nothing that's affected compliance, more just visibility things I'd want as a finance lead. The team fills the gap when I ask but I'd rather have it in the dashboard. We were live and filing in under two weeks which honestly set a high bar, so when something small is missing it stands out more than it probably should. They do ship updates regularly so I'd expect it to close over time. **What problems is Taxwire solving and how is that benefiting you?** The core problem was that we were paying for a managed service and still managing most of the work ourselves. My controller was reviewing every Avalara return before it went out because we'd caught errors they hadn't flagged. Notices came in and we were chasing their support team for weeks to get an answer. Registering in new states took six weeks or more. None of that is what we paid for. Since switching, my controller's time on sales tax is basically nothing. We've added several new states and I haven't been involved in any of it. Taxwire's team monitors nexus, handles registrations when we cross a threshold, reviews every return before it files, and deals with any state correspondence. That's what I thought I was buying from Avalara. It just took switching to actually get it. ### 3. I didn't have to manage any of it. **What do you dislike about Taxwire?** The platform is newer and some features are still catching up to the tax team's capabilities. That said, the release cadence is super fast. Things that weren't available when we onboarded have shipped since. **What problems is Taxwire solving and how is that benefiting you?** Multi-state filing prep was consuming three days of my time every month. I was pulling transaction data from Stripe, reformatting it in Excel, cross-referencing with our accounting system, and manually entering figures into state portals. Every month. Taxwire automated the calculation layer, handles all the filings through their in-house tax team, and monitors for new nexus obligations as we grow. I now spend about five minutes a month on sales tax. That time goes back into close, reconciliation, and everything else that actually requires my attention. ### 4. Also we had obligations in 14 states and a historical gap we hadn't addressed. Taxwire ran the nexus study, told us exactly where we stood, handled the VDA process, and got us current.
