You can easily check sales tax for economic nexus and physical presence. It makes it easy for us to see what states we need to file a sales tax permit. Each state has its own requirement like mailing in the application or applying online for out of state. I also wish that there was a better way to get questions answered from support. The other thing is being informed of which states we gave new economic nexus on. This also tells us if there are new states we have nexus in. It also helps us track which states we have filed and which ones we need to file in. The onboarding process was comprehensive, and the support we've received has just been top notch. We did a custom integration, and TaxJar's team helped us along the way. The dashboard is really clear and easy to understand, and the autofiling has just been a lifesaver. **What do you dislike about TaxJar?** We are a subscription-based business, so we had to build out a custom integration. It would've been amazing if TaxJar had the Stripe subscriptions integration to make things plug-and-play. That has resulted in us having to deal with state-tax compliance issues that would typically impact only a much larger business. And it we ever get stuck, the customer service is second to none. (That means first, ya know) Oh! And also the "Look Back" feature is tippy top. **What do you dislike about TaxJar?** Well.... this is sales tax we're talking about. There's nothing at all to like about sales tax, right? Still, if I could waive a wand, I might add some kind of proactive diagnostic to TaxJar. We had a bad setup on one state that caused us some problems. Probably our fault (duh) but it went unnoticed for some time, until the state started to complain. **What problems is TaxJar solving and how is that benefiting you?** We switched from Avalara when they (a) were wrong; (b) would not fix their mistakes; and (c) still charging us ten times the value. Dumping Avalara was the biggest fix of all. But of course, what I really mean is that TJ helps us pay taxes in every jurisdiction of every state -- but only when we need to. It interfaces seamlessly with Shopify and takes care of pretty much everything for us. ### 23. This service was very easy to set up and I am definitely not fond of accounting work. It pulled all of our sales data from Amazon and calculated our sales tax. It has made filing the returns quite easy. Doing this by hand would be impossible. Doing it with an accountant would cost probably 100x what taxjar costs. **What do you dislike about TaxJar?** Amazon makes a few things difficult. There are some issues with Amazon and California that are pretty aggravating to get set up. CA actually sends out paper letters with codes that you have to enter. Not a fault of Taxjar, but it would be nice if this were better. Though, getting the CA sales tax office to change how they do things probably isn't easy. **Recommendations to others considering TaxJar:** Support has been excellent. I have tried the other services and do not find them anywhere near as friendly to small businesses. I get all my clients on TaxJar as soon as possible after getting them registered, and once things are set up properly, it runs itself. The info provided in their blogs is amazing, and customer service gets answers to me quickly, and in depth. It is easy to set up and run reports, and provides very helpful information for determining nexus. **What do you dislike about TaxJar?** TaxJar is constantly evolving so has some limitations in the initial setup and filing, and cannot yet do all of the local jurisdictions that are required, but it is getting there. I also cannot always identify the methodology being used to place sales in various buckets, so I use it as a good place to start at the macro level, then I do my confirmations from there. Also, tax return auto file cannot be separated from the tax payment step, which makes it hard to use TaxJar without a US bank account. **What problems is TaxJar solving and how is that benefiting you?** We work with ecommerce clients from all over the world, and TaxJar makes their sales tax compliance burdens much more efficient and manageable. ### 27. I have experience working with many sales tax platforms such as Taxify, Avalara, and TaxJar, and no solution comes close to eliminating the hassle and burden of sales tax for e-commerce businesses. The number one reason we love Taxjar is its usability - TaxJar's design is simple, elegant and effective. TaxJar's integrations are powerful, their tax rate calculation is on-point, and their AutoFile service is always done on-time. Their support team is always helpful, and gets back to us fairly quickly. I have no problem recommending TaxJar to any e-commerce company. It greatly reduces the amount of time we spend on processing sales tax filings, and ensuring that the tax collected by the sales channels is accurate. **What do you dislike about TaxJar?** AUTOFILE: At present time, you can only have TaxJar AutoFile returns using the tax that TaxJar calculated as being due. While this might sound helpful, it can become hugely problematic if you sell products that may be exempt in certain states (ex. clothing, supplements). TaxJar needs to support remitting the tax collected (rather than calculated) PRODUCT TAXABILITY: At present time, TaxJar has a handful of product exemption codes (which is great) but you can only apply the taxability codes to transactions if they take place on Amazon or Shopify. If you sell on any other platform, you can not apply the custom product tax codes. ECOMMERCE ONLY: TaxJar does not work well if you are selling on channels that do not integrate with TaxJar, OR products that have custom product taxability (ex. SaaS companies). TaxJar should consider beefing-up their CSV import functionality, as well as support custom product tax codes that can be created by the user. CSV IMPORT: At present time, you can not upload transactions based on tax codes, nor exemption states (Ex. resale). If you make a lot of sales at resale, you need to import the transactions, then manually search and categorize them. SUPPORT: At present time, support is limited to email unless on a Plus plan. Dedicated phone support for larger clients would be appreciated, especially for time-critical issues. Overall, This tool works best if you: -Sell primarily on eCommerce websites (ex. I had one issue in one of the states saying I owed less than 15 cents as a penalty for a state in which they did the filing.
