What do you like best about Symantec Messaging Gateway?

It did not crash and did not cause any service interruption while running. That is why, it is one the most stable solution for email gateway. It's updating system also worked flawlessly. Other email gateway solution always give some headache time to time. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Symantec Messaging Gateway?

SMG is one of oldest solution in the email security business and this is the reason of having an old console to manage the entire system. It is web based with 2000s standards. It is not intuitive to use for daily operation. Also, becase it uses old technologies, newer version of fishing emails always find their to bypass the system and reach end users. Recommendations to others considering Symantec Messaging Gateway:

If you are using an on-premise email system, then I would recommend you to use Symantec Brightmail Gateway. However, recently all companies are migrating their email systems to the cloud. For the cloud I would not recommend to go with Symantec as it is an old-head company which cannot compete with latest technologies. Products like Proofpoint and Azure native email spam system are more secure than Symantec. They have the technology to protect you from newer threats. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is Symantec Messaging Gateway solving and how is that benefiting you?

To secure email traffic and also to reduce the number of spam emails and phishing/scam emails. Without any email gateway solution, it will be chaos to run email systems in an infrastructure. I am not even mentioning about trojan and viruses. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

The simplicity with which SMG manages to fulfill its functionalities and also the integration it has with the entire Symantec security environment.

The creation of policies for spam or content control is not the friendliest thing you can find.

What do you dislike about Symantec Messaging Gateway?

- every new release solves a couple of bugs and introduces more new bugs.

- antivirus is not effective. even the latest version 10.6.6 is not able to decompose multiple attachment types like .msg .dat .... which opens the door for malicious software. DO NOT count on this product. Protection against malware/viruses is totally incomplete.

- The product looks like a Fisher Price toy. It is useless for more advanced users. I would not recommend it to anyone that works in an environment of +100 users. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Symantec messaging gateway gives more flexible deployment option like virtual appliance & physical appliance. the deployment of virtual appliance is very easy to configure. it provide option to configure polices at granular level. the most best feature is content filtering where can create different types of polices based on requirements. the scalability and performance also is one of the unique features.

it can integrate with any type of mail server and supports ATP. The system backup and recovery is also seemless. spam protection use multiple intelligence to identify real spam emails. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
