What stood out right away was how easy it was to move around the interface. Even for someone who isn’t deep into Kubernetes every day, it was straightforward to check what’s running, look at logs, and understand what’s healthy or not. During the POC, we deployed a few basic services, including our Managed Microservices module and some integration‑related components. Rancher made it simple to see everything in one place instead of jumping between different tools or terminals. **What do you dislike about SUSE Rancher?** Some parts of the setup took a bit of figuring out, especially when we tried running Rancher on a local machine just to test things out. There is also support from the manufacturer in Portuguese-BR, which is a big step forward for me. The product is frequently used by the operations team and the GUI environment is more than sufficient to perform routine tasks. **What do you dislike about SUSE Rancher?** There are some points to improve in the product, such as some facilities for configuring the final production environment. All the documentation says that specialized support from SUSE technicians is necessary to deliver the production environment, but all other products are like this too. The lack of native integration with a CI tool was also noted, but was overcome by CI scripts that integrate with the product's CD feature, but due to no integration with CI, in certain projects up to the CD we are executing by script outside the tool resource. **What problems is SUSE Rancher solving and how is that benefiting you?** Before using Rancher, we were in a test environment that grew into a productive environment with Docker Swarm. Although the tool worked well, it started to increase the complexity in product administration and, therefore, we started managing microservices projects with Rancher. It comes with a built-in user management system, and can isolate teams by using Projects. All of this is very difficult to do with Kubernetes by itself. The Kubernetes ecosystem is immense-- too large really, and each layer of the Kubernetes stack requires you to evaluate different products for every single layer-- the decision paralysis is real! Rancher simplifies this by providing some good choices out of the box-- Canal for the network driver, Prometheus/Grafana/Rancher Alerts for monitoring & alerting, a Rancher Logging front-end to configure your Network driver. Their choices save me time and let me focus on the needs of my users, not the needs of Kubernetes. **What do you dislike about SUSE Rancher?** Rancher before 2.4 was not quite ready for production-- crashes and instability were common. This has improved in Rancher 2.4+. The documentation is split between Rancher Server and RKE, which are two different products, and you need to read both to understand some configuration options. Rancher's support for bare metal environments is a little bare-- there is no built-in Layer-4 loadbalancer like you would have with AWS ELB or other clouds. This is a critical, missing component. **What problems is SUSE Rancher solving and how is that benefiting you?** Kubernetes is for a small group, but for a larger installation, Kubernete's complexity becomes difficult to manage. You need to think about user-RBAC, which isn't built into Kubernetes, integrating with a monitoring program such as Prometheus & Grafana-- all of that becomes a burden. Every level of the stack comes with an ecosystem full of choices, and you end up spending your entire time *evaluating* Kubernetes instead of *using* Kubernetes. Rancher makes many of those choices for you, and saves time so you can focus on the real goal-- allowing the team to use the product. ### 41. At the time we started using Rancher it had just reached 1.0 GA, and comparatively all of the other tools available like Docker Swarm seemed unnecessarily complex and more trouble than they were worth to use. Rancher was easy to get setup, reliable, and made container orchestration a breeze. **What do you dislike about SUSE Rancher?** There isn't much to dislike about Rancher. The high-availability feature could use some work. According tot the official docs as of version 1.5.x, there is still the following caveat when upgrading an HA Rancher server: "NOTE: When upgrading an HA setup, the Rancher server setup will be down during the upgrade." It seems like some work could be done to make the HA environment truly HA during the upgrade process. Compared to other orchestration tools like, Kubernetes, it lacks some of the auto-scaling capabilities. **What problems is SUSE Rancher solving and how is that benefiting you?** Rancher helped us increase our deployment time for new application versions.
