What stood out right away was how easy it was to move around the interface. Even for someone who isn’t deep into Kubernetes every day, it was straightforward to check what’s running, look at logs, and understand what’s healthy or not. During the POC, we deployed a few basic services, including our Managed Microservices module and some integration‑related components. Rancher made it simple to see everything in one place instead of jumping between different tools or terminals. **What do you dislike about SUSE Rancher?** Some parts of the setup took a bit of figuring out, especially when we tried running Rancher on a local machine just to test things out. A couple of settings, like the built‑in cluster name, are locked down, so you can’t rename them the way you might want for a clean demo. It wasn’t a big issue, but it did slow us down at the start while we worked around it. It should be a clean slate rather than fixing things up. When setting up initially or POC, I expected it to be guiding us rather than working on the stuff that's fixed. **What problems is SUSE Rancher solving and how is that benefiting you?** During our initial testing for some of ours microservices, Rancher made it much easier to understand how our microservices would behave once they were running inside Kubernetes. This was critical for us, as Rancher is a core platform technology underpinning our production business services. Rancher provides excellent flexibility by being cloud- and infrastructure-agnostic. This future-proofs our deployments and gives us the ability to scale seamlessly into other cloud providers or our on-premises datacentres if required. After iterating through a few design approaches, Rancher proved straightforward to set up, integrate, run and manage. Having the option of a paid, “production-ready” assessment carried out by a SUSE Rancher expert also gave us peace of mind that we were on the right track. Although the SUSE Security (NeuVector ) solution has been somewhat fiddly at times and has produced a few false positives, it has nonetheless proven to be a valuable addition to Rancher. It provides us with enterprise-grade, zero-trust container security by continually scanning across the container lifecycle, providing runtime security, sophisticated threat detection, and compliance features. Finally, I want to highlight the support we’ve received from the SUSE customer success and account management team. They have been fantastic—highly responsive, supportive, and committed to delivering an excellent customer experience. **What do you dislike about SUSE Rancher?** I wouldn’t say there is any specific that I dislike about SUSE Rancher, the only real thing I would highlight would be the issues we have had with SUSE security (NeuVector). The support team have been pretty responsive though when we have highlighted issues or logged support tickets **What problems is SUSE Rancher solving and how is that benefiting you?** The main problems it is currently solving for us are centralising container platform management, reducing operational overhead through easier platform updates (a single-pane solution), improving scalability, and tightening security through SUSE NeuVector. So if you are in the cloud, that management cluster now cost you money. It does not need to be a large cluster, but it still uses resources. SUSE Rancher can also be pretty complex, with lost of parts and pieces troubleshooting can sometimes be a bear. **What problems is SUSE Rancher solving and how is that benefiting you?** The greatest problem that it is solving for us is seamless intergration for our developers no matter where the cluster sits. We are going from on-prim clusters to cloud clusters, so from a developer standpoint moving workloads is seemless and easier. In addition, its well-thought-out design and well-directed development fits the needs of the market and the changing IT environment. We also considered two other main market competitors of Rancher. From the great three, only Rancher has very soft dependencies with other SUSE products. You can choose to use them (for example: Longhorn, NeuVector, KubeWarden, Harvester) but you are not forced to do so to gain full functionality of Rancher. Rancher is like Kubernetes on steroids: easy to install and learn, hard to master but have very high ROI. Some functionalities takes months to master, but will return that time when there is high Frequency of use of them in Day-2 operations (i.e. good configuration of some infrastructure providers takes months and requires implementing changes at infrastructure layer, but when finished gives possibility to create dozens of downstream clusters in minutes). I love it's simple subscription model, as much as I cherish that it is fully open source. If you don't know what I mean then try to "install to learn" approach with two main Rancher's market competitors... it's not possible, the closest you get is "try and buy", yuck! Rancher provides a very well documented REST API, so it can be easily integrate your services with it i.e. We have implemented self-service of Namespace lifecycle (create/quota mgmt/delete) that integrates Rancher's authentication and authorization model wth our corporate propetriary IAM solution. **What do you dislike about SUSE Rancher?** Rancher has well-known roadmap with many functionalities planned, but some of them are neverending stories (i.e. We are waiting for "Projects 2.0" feature with implementation of hierarchical namespaces for over 1,5 year and it still will be available "soon"). Some internal modules are more mature than other. That is well seen on Rancher's drivers for different infrastructure and cloud providers. Rancher is easy to implement within public cloud, but it's implementation in secure corporate air-gapped on-premise environment is uneven (some things are easy and well documented, some will bring one a lot of new grey hairs). The multiple speeds of development of different Rancher's functionalities can lead to many breaking changes between releases, so administrators have a lot of work with every upgrade. Rancher is stable corporate-grade sofware, but every company that want to implement it at scale must have a very professional and well educated team of administrators and/or devopses. On balance a positive experience with some frustrations **Rating:** 3.5/5.0 stars **Reviewed by:** Joel H. | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.) **Reviewed Date:** August 04, 2023 **What do you like best about SUSE Rancher?** I like the way that Rancher interacts directly with VMware vSphere - providing a simple interface through which you can configure one or more machine pools - making getting up and running with an on-premises Kubernetes environment straightforward. **What do you dislike about SUSE Rancher?** I believe that the documentation lets Rancher down, the document isn't as rich as that provided by similarly sized technology companies. We often have to refer to support requests and forum articles for guidance on specific issues. Ultimately, when it works its great - but there have been a couple of occasions where Rancher has failed (either fully or partially and it has proved very difficult or in some cases impossible to resolve). **What problems is SUSE Rancher solving and how is that benefiting you?** We primarily deploy our applications on EKS within AWS. However, we have a customer request for an on-premise installation in a prexisting vSphere datacenter. Rancher's ability to interact with VMware vSphere and handle the configuration and on-going management of a Kubernetes cluster proved invaluable. ### 43. Originally we came from SUSE CaaSP and were "forced" into Rancher. In retrospect, this was a good decision, Rancher comes with everything we need and - if we exclude the last releases (e.g. 2.7.5) - it's pretty stable too. With the fleet integration, we can pretty much deploy a new cluster with all managed services we provide we just a few clicks. **What do you dislike about SUSE Rancher?** * Releases could be a bit more stable * Multi-tenancy in Fleet still missing **What problems is SUSE Rancher solving and how is that benefiting you?** As said before, we need to run our cluster in an Air-Gapped environment, so "the cloud" is not a thing. You can run Rancher completly Air-Gapped and still manage and deploy new clusters with just a few clicks. With the Fleet integration we make sure all downstream clusters come with our Managed-Services. ### 45.
