The best tool that we currently use is the exit intent popup. The Javascript Code notices when the mouse cursor is moving to the top of the browser and fires an invitation to subscribe to the newsletter.

SumoMe is an all-in-one solution for those looking to improve the "sociability" of their site and increase the number of email subscribers. My favorite tool is List Builder, which is an email collection popup, and Share, which is their social sharing overlay. There is also a robust rules system to let you tailor how you want things to appear, where, and when. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

I mostly use Heat Maps and Content Analytics. Both work great and have excellent representations of the data. The media share buttons are good too. SumoMe is incredibly easy to use. I was up in running and capturing leads in 15 minutes, maybe less. Our opt-in rate went up 10x or more within a day using the Welcome Mat. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

We would like to setup some rules for where Welcome Mat shows (ie. only on certain post types, categories or tags), but it does not seems to have rules for this right now which is a little disappointing. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
