## Stoplight Reviews
  ### 1. Stoplight is difficult to use, buggy

**Rating:** 1.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Amelia B. | Software Engineer, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** August 16, 2022

**What do you like best about Stoplight?**

Not much, it gets the job done (kind of) but it should be a much better product.

**What do you dislike about Stoplight?**

- unclear relationship between yml and form (sometimes these do not match up, variables that are in the yml are not in the form)
- editing the yml is really hard to do correctly
- the recently redesign is very poorly received by customers, we get lots of complaints about this by people using our product
- the front end code of stoplight is not efficient enough to support most API calls in the try it out block
- version history/version control should be more obvious/easier

**What problems is Stoplight solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We use stoplight to host our API docs. I wish we used something else that was based on our code or didn't involve so much manual work to maintain, and one that was easier to use and our customers liked better than stoplight.

  ### 2. Experimental vs Robust

**Rating:** 1.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Hospital & Health Care | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 28, 2019

**What do you like best about Stoplight?**

Design and mock APIs at ease. There are many features of this product ranging from design, testing, documenting, and publishing that makes it appealing to many API designers who need to communicate all aspects of evolving an API product.

**What do you dislike about Stoplight?**

Design view can be presented better. I like the Read-only view but sometimes when toggling from Read to Design mode, the API endpoints are not grouped in the same way as the Read view so it makes it harder to find the correct endpoint to edit, especially when you have more than 40 endpoints in the view.

There are 3 versions of Stoplight as they have gone through several iterations of the product. For production quality usage, please use Stoplight Next as it is more stable. Stoplight Studio is their beta product and it lacks a lot of functionality that Stoplight Next has. The latest 3rd version they are currently promoting is Stoplight Platform, which I believe it is the next thing going forward. I haven't used it yet so I'm unable to give any review/recommendation.

**Recommendations to others considering Stoplight:**

Recommended for users who care about sharing their API design blueprints with publishing features. Stoplight is best if teams believe in designing API first before implementation. Some engineers prefer to annotate their API documentation within source code as a quick way of "skipping" the design aspect or interfacing with non-developers. While this approach is convenient, it is tightly coupled to source code and cannot be portable when a different language is chosen in the foreseeable future or if APIs are implemented in different languages (hybrid microservices architecture).

**What problems is Stoplight solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Ability to turn initial concepts of an API design into actual implementation is key. Saving valuable time on the implementation because by the time the design is finalized and tested against mocked data, the actual implementation is very close to what it was designed. Plus, you get documentation from designing it in Stoplight almost naturally!

**Official Response from Anna Daugherty:**

  ### 3. Great result, but not very intuitive authoring experience

**Rating:** 2.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Information Technology and Services | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 28, 2019

**What do you like best about Stoplight?**

I love how the end product looks and the try it out functionality.

**What do you dislike about Stoplight?**

It's a shame that we aren't hosting the docs ourselves, so we're missing out on any SEO data we could be gathering. This is also one of the most difficult tools I've ever used in terms of authoring experience in my 10+ years as a technical writer. If I have to change something that resides in an existing module, I have no way of knowing where it's being reused throughout the docs, so I have to click through every page to make sure that the change I just made isn't providing incorrect information on a different page. It takes a LOT of trial and error for a new user to figure out where the page components live (like where to change the title, etc.)

**Recommendations to others considering Stoplight:**

Do some research to figure out HOW your developers are using your docs before making a decision. We thought that the "try it out" functionality was the bees knees, when in reality, it's difficult for the developers to find, and they weren't really using it.

**What problems is Stoplight solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I think our end users really like the look and feel of our API docs that we've created using stoplight. Doing our own research though, we've come to realize that our developers struggle to find the Try it out functionality and that 9/10 they're more likely to just copy/paste the code and run it on their own.

**Official Response from Anna Daugherty:**

> Thank you for the excellent feedback. It's been a little while, so I wanted to update you about an exciting new open source documentation tool called Elements. Embed OpenAPI documentation wherever you want using web components.

Elements is currently in beta, but you're more than welcome to try it out now and see if it helps with some of your docs needs and pain points.

If you have any questions or feedback, feel free to leave it on our roadmap!

  ### 4. NWEA Using Stoplight

**Rating:** 2.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Education Management | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 29, 2019

**What do you like best about Stoplight?**

The Ui makes it east to edit API's. Previously we were editing API specs via yaml files.

**What do you dislike about Stoplight?**

Poor integration with source control. Keeping the spec up to date is a manual process.

**What problems is Stoplight solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Managing API contracts

  ### 5. Meh

**Rating:** 1.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in E-Learning | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 28, 2019

**What do you like best about Stoplight?**

I like the ability to create draft API before they become the real thing

**What do you dislike about Stoplight?**

I dislike the lack of "pull requests" before draft API becoming real APIs

**What problems is Stoplight solving and how is that benefiting you?**

A central location for API documentation. It greatly supports multi-team collaboration
