"A Stable, Low-Maintenance vSAN Solution That Simply Works"

5/5

What do you like best about StarWind Virtual SAN?

Reduced infrastructure costs – StarWind Virtual SAN allowed us to build a highly available storage platform using existing servers, avoiding the significant cost of a traditional SAN while still providing enterprise-level resilience.

Improved uptime and reliability – Over three years of operation, the platform has delivered excellent stability with no unplanned outages attributable to the storage layer, helping ensure critical school systems remain available to staff and students.

Lower operational overhead – The solution requires very little day-to-day management, allowing IT staff to focus on strategic projects rather than storage administration, while responsive support has minimised the time spent resolving issues when assistance has been needed. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about StarWind Virtual SAN?

While the management tools are functional and reliable, the administration experience can feel somewhat dated compared to newer hyperconverged and cloud-managed platforms. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is StarWind Virtual SAN solving and how is that benefiting you?

StarWind Virtual SAN provides us with highly available shared storage without the cost and complexity of a traditional SAN.

This has significantly improved the resilience of our critical school services, including file servers, management systems, and other key applications. It has also reduced infrastructure costs by allowing us to use standard server hardware rather than investing in dedicated SAN equipment.

The solution requires very little day-to-day management, giving our IT team more time to focus on strategic projects rather than storage administration. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

"Seamless Hyper-V High Availability with Clear, Repeatable VM Replication Recovery"

5/5

What do you like best about StarWind Virtual SAN?

What I liked best about StarWind Virtual SAN was how well it fit into our normal Hyper-V operations. It gave us a straightforward way to keep VMs replicated to the other cluster as part of our standard deployment process, and when we needed to rebuild replication, the recovery steps were clear and repeatable. The biggest value for us was having practical high availability and easier recovery built into everyday infrastructure management. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about StarWind Virtual SAN?

What I disliked most was the troubleshooting complexity when replication or checkpoints ran into problems. In normal operation, StarWind fit well into our Hyper-V workflow, but when something broke, recovery could involve multiple manual steps like stopping replication, removing stale cluster objects, deleting replica-side storage, and reconfiguring replication through the replica broker. That made it powerful, but not completely simple during exception handling. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is StarWind Virtual SAN solving and how is that benefiting you?

StarWind Virtual SAN is solving our need for highly available, recoverable VM storage across our Hyper-V cluster environment. It helps us avoid having workloads depend on a single host or storage location, and it makes replication to the other cluster part of our standard VM deployment process. The business benefit is better uptime protection, more consistent resilience across systems, and faster recovery when replication or host issues occur, because we can re-establish protection through a documented process rather than rebuilding services from scratch. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

"A reliable and cost-effective alternative to traditional SAN solution"

5/5

What do you like best about StarWind Virtual SAN?

One of the biggest advantages is the ability to build a resilient storage infrastructure using standard server hardware instead of investing in an expensive dedicated SAN. For small and medium-sized environments, this provides excellent value and a compelling return on investment. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about StarWind Virtual SAN?

There are a few areas that could be improved. The documentation is comprehensive but can sometimes make it difficult to quickly find answers to specific configuration questions. Some advanced settings also assume a solid understanding of Windows clustering, networking, and storage concepts, so less experienced administrators may face a learning curve. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is StarWind Virtual SAN solving and how is that benefiting you?

We deployed StarWind Virtual SAN to provide highly available shared storage for a two-node virtualization cluster. The main reason we chose it was to avoid the cost and complexity of a traditional SAN while still maintaining high availability for our virtual machines. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

"StarWind Virtual SAN: Synchronized NVMe Storage with Easy Web-Based Management"

5/5

What do you like best about StarWind Virtual SAN?

We implemented StarWind Virtual SAN in our environment, starting with VMware and later transitioning to Proxmox. This setup let us fully leverage our servers’ NVMe storage while keeping it synchronized across just two nodes. After moving to Proxmox, we also benefited from the free version’s web-based management interface, which is particularly helpful if you’d rather not manage volume creation through PowerShell. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about StarWind Virtual SAN?

With the free version, there’s no web GUI for management when running it as a VMware virtual machine. Support is handled through the community forum, which is understandable and expected for a free product. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is StarWind Virtual SAN solving and how is that benefiting you?

Most other VSAN products require a three-node cluster, while StarWind allowed us to build a two-node cluster with full synchronization. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

"StarWind Virtual SAN: Cost-Effective, Flexible HA Storage on Standard Hardware"

4.5/5

What do you like best about StarWind Virtual SAN?

Our previous environment ran on Cisco HyperFlex with VMware. Licensing costs became hard to justify for a mid-sized setup, and the hardware was nearing end-of-life, creating support risk and forcing a refresh. Continuing with the same stack meant a full hardware replacement plus ongoing VMware licensing—at a much higher cost with limited added value and continued vendor lock-in.

We evaluated other HCI and storage options, but most required expensive licenses or proprietary hardware. StarWind stood out by offering software-defined storage on standard hardware, removing dependence on costly hypervisor licensing while maintaining high availability.

We deployed StarWind Virtual SAN to provide shared storage between nodes without traditional SAN hardware. The result is a simpler, cost-effective environment that meets our performance and availability needs. It is easier to manage, scales cleanly, and avoids vendor lock-in.

The transition was straightforward and aligned well with our operations. The biggest gain is flexibility, control over hardware, cost, and architecture without sacrificing resiliency. For organizations facing rising licensing costs and aging HCI platforms, StarWind is a practical alternative. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about StarWind Virtual SAN?

The documentation has a few gaps, and the initial setup required a more hands-on approach than I expected. Better automation would have made the deployment process easier and more straightforward. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is StarWind Virtual SAN solving and how is that benefiting you?

StarWind is a strong fit for organizations looking to move away from vendor lock-in, especially in small to mid-sized environments where infrastructure spend is closely managed. It works well when you need high availability but don’t want the overhead of a third node or complex quorum configuration, making it a practical option for lean teams. "StarWind Virtual SAN: Robust, Cost-Effective Storage Management"

5/5

What do you like best about StarWind Virtual SAN?

We use StarWind Virtual SAN to create a robust and redundant storage infrastructure between our on-prem servers by using a software solution and saving money compared with dedicated hardware solutions. We've never experienced any failure in the past 2.5 years. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about StarWind Virtual SAN?

It does require StarWind support for the initial setup and configuration. Also, troubleshooting, if needed, usually involves StarWind support. Luckily, the support is timely and painless. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is StarWind Virtual SAN solving and how is that benefiting you?

For remote locations where communications are limited and cloud services are difficult to obtain, on-premise servers are the only solution. StarWind allows us to manage storage in a reliable and effective way, which makes it much easier to keep things running smoothly in those environments. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

"Enterprise-Grade High Availability Without Traditional SAN Complexity"

4.5/5

What do you like best about StarWind Virtual SAN?

What I like best about StarWind Virtual SAN is how it delivers enterprise-grade high availability without the cost and complexity of traditional SANs. The ability to mirror storage between just two nodes and provide seamless failover for critical workloads is incredibly valuable—it gives peace of mind knowing that if one server fails, our VMs keep running without interruption.

I also appreciate how straightforward it is to deploy and manage. Unlike some larger, more complex storage platforms, StarWind integrates cleanly with our existing virtualization environment, doesn’t require a separate storage specialist, and allows us to expand storage or tweak settings without complicated processes.

Finally, the performance is impressive. Even with synchronous replication running between nodes, our SQL servers, file shares, and line-of-business applications run smoothly, which shows that the software is well-optimized for real-world workloads. In short, it combines reliability, simplicity, and performance in a way that truly meets our business needs. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about StarWind Virtual SAN?

What I dislike most about StarWind Virtual SAN is that the management interface can feel a bit dated and not as intuitive as some modern platforms. Certain advanced settings are buried in menus, and it’s not always obvious what the impact of a change will be without consulting documentation or support.

Another point is that alerting and monitoring could be more detailed. While the system notifies you of issues, the messages are sometimes generic, so troubleshooting requires digging into logs or external tools to understand what’s really happening. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is StarWind Virtual SAN solving and how is that benefiting you?

StarWind Virtual SAN solves one of the biggest headaches in our environment: providing high availability and shared storage without requiring expensive SAN hardware. Before implementing it, our virtual machines were tied to local storage on individual hosts, which meant that if a server failed, workloads went down until we could manually restore them elsewhere. That created risk for critical services like file servers, SQL databases, and internal applications.

With StarWind, our two-node cluster mirrors storage between hosts and presents it as shared storage to the hypervisor. This solves multiple problems at once:

Eliminates single points of failure – If one node goes offline, VMs automatically fail over to the other node.

Reduces downtime risk – Planned maintenance or unexpected hardware failures no longer interrupt business operations.

Cuts infrastructure costs – We avoided purchasing a separate SAN, instead leveraging the hardware we already had.

Simplifies management – It’s software-defined, integrates with our virtualization stack, and doesn’t require a storage specialist to maintain. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

"Exceptional Support Makes StarWind vSAN Stand Out"

5/5

What do you like best about StarWind Virtual SAN?

Their Professional Support is what I like best. They are great! Within minutes of your StarWind vSAN going offline, they respond with immediate Support and assistance through remote sessions. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about StarWind Virtual SAN?

The only thing I disliked was parts of the documentation that were not detailed enough or hard to understand. The majority of the documentation was wonderful. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is StarWind Virtual SAN solving and how is that benefiting you?

By using this software, we were able to set up a two-node cluster without needing any extra storage. We successfully built a hyperconverged cluster with complete failover capabilities, relying solely on two servers. This setup now provides us with highly available storage, and our virtual machines can migrate seamlessly between the two nodes. What truly stands out is the Professional Support they provide. Whenever a node goes offline, their Support team contacts us within minutes to ensure everything is under control and to offer help in restoring the cluster.
