The Spiceworks inventory tracker is a good, stable product that will scan the LAN and report back the computers it detects, their hostname, and IP address. It can also detect the Windows version and the applications installed version. The installed client is small and does not take many resources of the computer; the client can be deployed by a GPO or manually installed. The web interface of the system is relatively easy to navigate. The internal device database can be cleared, and the system can rescan the whole network rescanned. Brilliant system. Fairly easy to setup, does a decent job at crawling the network once you have your setup entered in. Very resource intensive while scanning, which is essentially a non-stop scan in my environment slowing down other applications running on the same server. Even when you try to turn the scanner off, it starts scanning again, have to go into the settings and force it to stop multiple times per day. It's now cloud based and you can access the information anywhere, deploy anywhere and still access from the same place as the Cloud Help Desk and integrate it with it. Recommendations to others considering Spiceworks Inventory: Read the instructions first .... it is easy enough once you have done that and also make sure you have a list of all networks you want to scan ahead and also any admin credentials ready to add in case you need to connect and query the machines too. Make sure you also have no duplicate names on the network too, either end user or machine names and that you also add 'non-Windows' devices like network devices in there too as it will be able to inventory those for you as well. It's hard to beat free when it comes to a valuable technology tool to improve functionality and up time in your business. What do you dislike about Spiceworks Inventory? The network mapping can be a little picky with security and permissions to pull all necessary data, takes a little massaging to ensure accurate data. We are more easily able to monitor our various network sites and monitor for uptime. This allows us to get alerted much more quickly if there's an issue and allow us to apply a fix much faster, keeping our revenue producers working. It's also easier to note WHERE the issue is, not just at which site we're having an issue. This results in reduced time running down or diagnosing problems and more time spent implementing a solution.
