## Spanning Backup Reviews
  ### 1. Kaseya's product spanning is terrible

**Rating:** 1.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Leah B. | CEO, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** February 23, 2023

**What do you like best about Spanning Backup?**

I do not have much positive feedback. Their interface updated with no warning. I do not have much positive feedback. Their interface updated with no warning.

**What do you dislike about Spanning Backup?**

I am still struggling with support from this organization. I do not have much positive feedback. Their interface updated with no warning. The billing department, development team, and management are terrible. I will not be renewing this product in the future.

**What problems is Spanning Backup solving and how is that benefiting you?**

They are supposed to be providing cloud back up services via spanning. The product itself is not bad but inferior to their sister product backupify. The developers are nonresponsive to troubleshooting issues and they are a mess. It took months to get integral actions addressed and it does not seem that there is much if any organization and project management going on.

  ### 2. Spanning is a set and forget solution for M365 Backups

**Rating:** 1.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Marketing and Advertising | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** May 11, 2023

**What do you like best about Spanning Backup?**

It is simple to select which accounts should be backed up and quick license type each should have. Spanning also automatically adds new accounts from M365 so new employees are included in our backups without interaction.

**What do you dislike about Spanning Backup?**

Update: The service would not let us restore a large folder or a full account. Cancellation and refund process has been going on for many months.

I would like to see more parts of M365 backed up. Most of the data is backed up but they are still working on certain features. I would also like the full path for files that can't be backed up so that I can research the error messages without a support ticket. I would also like a percent complete indicator to see how long the backup will take. We had an initial backup that took over 30 days to complete.

**What problems is Spanning Backup solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Spanning is backing up our M365 email, SharePoint and OneDrive accounts.

  ### 3. Horrible Product thats riddles with bugs!

**Rating:** 0.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Computer Software | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** September 27, 2024

**What do you like best about Spanning Backup?**

Nothing! Its a product thats riddled with bugs, does not work 1/2 the time!

**What do you dislike about Spanning Backup?**

The interface is riddled with issues.

The displayed time does not reflect local time and users are asked to figure out what time zone it is in by reading documentation etc to figure out what data center and timezone thats in.

Parts of the UI show users licensed and others say it's not.

The section that says problems found, shows a generic error code, that makes no sense or points to a problem or a solution or allows a user to take action.

The support team are baffled by the product and how badly things work as well.

Events don't have information on what user action was taken on, i.e let's say a user was provisioned with a license, it would say the license was issued to a user, but not who it was etc.

there is text, that has zero value! meaningless data! The product feels like it was built by amateurs who had zero care about how it works and how admins use it.

**What problems is Spanning Backup solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Backup Google workspace

  ### 4. Deceptive and unfair. No utilities to mass migrate data to another platform

**Rating:** 1.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Medical Devices | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** February 29, 2024

**What do you like best about Spanning Backup?**

The backup tool was fairly easy to set up.

**What do you dislike about Spanning Backup?**

1. They accepted my business to backup data at a specific cost per month, with no limits. Then after a couple of years they said I have too much data to back up and wanted a lot more money. When I asked them to send me my data or give me a tool to mass migrate my data to another platform, they could not give me a solution other than to individually download data from each user account.

2. The platform was unable to move my company account smoothly from one domain to a new domain when we changed our company name and domain. Their solution was to keep using our old domain. That was not possible.

3. Kaseya is constantly trying to upsell their other applications.

**What problems is Spanning Backup solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Need cloud backup solution.

  ### 5. Doesn't perform its core function well

**Rating:** 0.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Manufacturing | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** February 22, 2024

**What do you like best about Spanning Backup?**

Easy, turkey setup and a simple integration process

**What do you dislike about Spanning Backup?**

Constant failures when backing up items that other tooling has no problems with. Essentially, it doesn't perform its core function well.

**What problems is Spanning Backup solving and how is that benefiting you?**

It was supposed to solve the issue of not having data replicated for data restore and disaster recovery. We still have major gaps despite the tool, so we have yet to see a net benefit.

  ### 6. Google Workspace Backup Review

**Rating:** 0.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Information Technology and Services | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** November 15, 2022

**What do you like best about Spanning Backup?**

The thing that stands out most is the cost of the service. It's priced very well and it does backup everything on Google Workspace. The main feature I used it for was Google Drive. The web interface allows you to see all files backed up on an individual level as well as date stamps for each backup. The most useful feature is that you can restore everything with a single action if needed.

UPDATE:

I can confirm that, as of 05/2023, I have not incurred an "Exessive Use" charge. This is good news!

**What do you dislike about Spanning Backup?**

The ToS is not publicly available. After I manually requested it I was able to verify that even though the website advertises "unlimited", the ToS states:

"it is Excessive Use if at any time the cost of Licensee's Users' storage consumption far exceeds the Fees for the Services as calculated by Spanning".

If you occur "Excessive Use" they charge $275/TB.

Spanning also does not backup any files on Google Drive that are only downloadable by the owner, such as files flagged as malware. This can be very annoying because Google will have false positives that it flags and those files will never be backed up. Other services don't have this issue.

UPDATE:

I attempted a restore several times for files as little as 101GB and the restore gets "stuck". When I use the word "stuck", I mean the the restore is still there and acts like it's working, but no progress is made after a certain point. You have to reach out to support to have them confirm it's stuck and cancel it for you so you can try again.

Engineering reports this as an API call limit. I find that hard to believe under the circumstances. Nonetheless, there's no point in offering the service for customers with large Google Drives if you can't restore more than 100GB at a time.

Out of 4 restores, 3 have gotten "stuck"...

**What problems is Spanning Backup solving and how is that benefiting you?**

The main benefit it provides for my business is ransomware protection. Google Drive had versioning, but it needs to be done per file and this can take ages in the event of a ransomware attack. Spanning can restore Google Drive with one click.

  ### 7. Not an "unlimited" backup, saddled with massive overage charge

**Rating:** 0.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Richard F. | CTO, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** October 14, 2022

**What do you like best about Spanning Backup?**

The service worked seamlessly and for the first year we had no issues.

**What do you dislike about Spanning Backup?**

We signed a 3 year contract with Spanning Backup. We understood the product to be unlimited backup - we are heavy Google Workspace users and the unlimited nature appealed to us.

After signing the contract our first year of service was uneventful. We dutifully paid our per licence fee +- $2,300 per year.

At the beginning of this year we received a bill for over $12,000 of overage fees. We were never informed there was an overage fee, we had no communication with our account manager (they claim they sent an email but I can't find one).

For an overage charge this significant we would expect a phone call and suggestions on ways to mitigate this, or perhaps cancel the contract if the service is not a good fit for our organisation.

The original account manager was no longer working at Spanning Backup and the new account manager could not help us because he was not the original account manager.

Despite multiple attempts to escalate the issue and resolve it in good faith, nobody has been able to help and now we have received threatening lawyer's letters demanding payment.

Absolutely shocking service. We are still trying to get someone at Kaseya who can help us resolve this issue.

**What problems is Spanning Backup solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Backing up Google Workspace data

  ### 8. Licenses Have Undisclosed Data Limits

**Rating:** 0.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Jeff S. | Keynote Speaker, Author, Productivity Coach, and Podcaster, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** February 23, 2022

**What do you like best about Spanning Backup?**

The backup service appeared to work, but I never needed to restore anything.

**What do you dislike about Spanning Backup?**

I was a happy customer of Spanning Backup for G Suite for the last 3 years. However, I was contacted this morning that my contract had surpassed its data cap and I would be charged an unspecific amount of money.

The shocking part to me was that I did not have unlimited data. My contract specifically says, "Spanning does not impose any pre-set limits on the amount of storage capacity Users are allowed to consume." Their website does not mention data caps anyway. Not on their sales page, not on their support page, not even in my own account page. No where.

There are no data cap mentions, yet somehow I was going to be charged for abusing their system. Yes, the contract says I'm not allowed to "far exceed" the use of my license, but when was the last time 1 terabyte of data was considered abuse when you paid for unlimited data? I had to talk to 5 different people and eventually fought my way up to speak to someone who had the power to void my contract and void the pending fees.

I don't have the words to describe the bait and switch that occurred here. According to Spanning, I was over my data limit since day 1, nearly 3 years ago. But, I was never told until today, and they had every intention of billing me despite the total lack of communication up to that point and the obviousness of my contract giving me the ability to backup as much data as I wanted.

Steer clear from Spanning Backups. They look great on paper, until they stab you in the back.

**What problems is Spanning Backup solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I'm not solving any problems any longer. I canceled my contract and walked away forever.

**Official Response from Adam Marget:**

> Hi Jeff,

Thank you for your review. We take all feedback, positive or negative, into consideration as we strive to deliver the best possible products and services to our users.

I’m sorry to hear that your experience with Spanning did not live up to expectations. While Spanning does offer unlimited retention and storage, usage of the service must be in accordance with our Fair-Use Policy. When a customers is in violation of the policy, our team reaches out and has a number of options to attempt to resolve the issue. The process for our team is to contact the customer to explain the situation and work towards rectifying it, they should not have sent any sort of invoice or bill before engaging you in conversation. Some options that should be presented in this scenario include managing retention limits, purging data, or reworking the monthly contract - we now offer a number of retention-based licensing options as well, to balance the various needs of our customers and ensure we’re able to keep our pricing affordable for all.

Again, I’m sorry to hear things didn’t work out. If there's any assistance our team can provide moving forward, or anything else you like to let us know about, please reach out to Adam at feedback@unitrends.com (I support both Spanning and Unitrends here at Kaseya, hence the alias).

  ### 9. Interactions with Spanning / Kaseya have been a nightmare over the last 2 years.

**Rating:** 0.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Patrick T. | Chief Executive Officer, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** August 15, 2022

**What do you like best about Spanning Backup?**

The interface works well and setup is convenient.

**What do you dislike about Spanning Backup?**

They started sending us surprise invoices for 20k USD, and then went completely unresponsive after more than 6 months of trying to get them to send us a new contract. After 20 emails to their support, accounting & management team, nobody seems to know what they are doing, and nobody is able to reply to an email within 6 months. Is that the type of company you want to put in charge of your data safety?

**What problems is Spanning Backup solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Back-up of google workspace and salesforce.

**Official Response from Adam Marget:**

> Hi Patrick, thank you for your open and honest feedback. I'm sorry to hear that your experience with our sales organization has been less than expected. I understand why you're frustrated.

We take into account all feedback, positive and negative, as we aim to deliver the best possible products and services to our community. Our team dropping the ball like this is unacceptable, and I won't try to make excuses for us. Your feedback will help us as we strive to improve.

If there's any assistance our team can provide moving forward, or anything else you like to let us know about, please reach out to Adam at feedback@unitrends.com (I support both Spanning and Unitrends here at Kaseya, and came from Unitrends, hence the alias).

  ### 10. Good product - but beware: you CANNOT unsubscribe

**Rating:** 0.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Frank W. | Geschäftsführer, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** August 22, 2022

**What do you like best about Spanning Backup?**

Reliable Product which integrates ok with Google Apps E-Mail and other services

**What do you dislike about Spanning Backup?**

Since Spanning was integrated in Kaseya the experience with the self-service portal is HORRIBLE.
a) the URLs are a mish-mash of netsuite and kaseya links (you can not verify where these links are coming from)
b) they store payment info without a possibility to delete card-info
c) there is NO possibility to unsubscribe and end your contract at the end of the current term

**What problems is Spanning Backup solving and how is that benefiting you?**

create a reliable backup

**Official Response from Adam Marget:**

> Hi Frank,

Thank you for sharing your feedback with us. We look to take all feedback, positive and negative, into account as we strive to bring the best possible products and services to our customers.

I’m glad to hear that you’ve found Spanning to be a reliable backup solution for your needs. With regards to the self-service portal, this is great feedback I’ll bring to our product management team – our intention with self-service is certainly not to make life more difficult for our users!

As far as licensing/billing, Spanning does expressly state in our EULA that payment terms (including debit/credit cards) will be held on file until all amounts due have been paid in full. With regards to termination, customers are able to terminate their contract/subscription by providing Spanning/Kaseya with notice of non-renewal at least 30 days before the end of the relevant term.

My apologies if this information was not communicated to you accurately. I’ve provided a link to our Privacy Statement as the Resource URL, from that page you can access our MSA which provides more detail as regards the above payment and contract termination items discussed above.

If there's any assistance our team can provide moving forward, or anything else you like to let us know about, please reach out to Adam at feedback@unitrends.com (I support both Spanning and Unitrends here at Kaseya, hence the alias).

  ### 11. One Word. Downhill. That's the direction Kaseya has gone.

**Rating:** 0.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Education Management | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** September 12, 2022

**What do you like best about Spanning Backup?**

Backup service seems to work. The interface is decent and does the job.

**What do you dislike about Spanning Backup?**

It's not super obvious that everything is getting backed up and that it was successful. Requires effort to check and verify. Company's support is terrible.

**What problems is Spanning Backup solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Salesforce backup is important and needs to be done in the cloud by a 3rd party.

**Official Response from Adam Marget:**

> Hello there! Thank you for your open and honest review. We take into account all feedback, positive and negative, as we aim to deliver the best possible products and services to our community and your feedback will help us as we strive to improve.

While I’m glad to hear the backup solution worked, your comments about the interface and reporting is great feedback I'll share with our UI/UX and product teams. I'm sorry to hear that your experience with our Support organization has been less than expected. I understand why that's frustrating.

If there's any assistance our team can provide moving forward, or anything specifics you would like to let us know about so we can address, please reach out to Adam at feedback@unitrends.com (I support both Spanning and Unitrends here at Kaseya, and came from Unitrends, hence the alias).

  ### 12. No improvement or new features within the last three years

**Rating:** 0.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Daniel W. | CEO & Co-Founder, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** February 11, 2021

**What do you like best about Spanning Backup?**

Implementation and Integration in Google Apps was easy done.

**What do you dislike about Spanning Backup?**

Spanning Backup has not seen any improvements or relevant new features in the last three years. If you want to search for a backup email or want to export data the user interface is a total disaster. You really need a lot of time if you use the search functionality because it is incredibly slow. The backup of the data itself works, but a complete export of the data is factually not possible. A single mailbox with 20GB of data took a week to export. Shady cancellation rules, hidden in their EULA with a 30day cancellation window.

**Recommendations to others considering Spanning Backup:**

Test export speed during the evaluation, beware of the cancellation rules

**What problems is Spanning Backup solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Gmail and Google Drive backup.

**Official Response from Shyam Oza:**

> Hi Daniel, growing pains are definitely a challenge and I'm sorry to see your experience today isn't the same as when it started. I'm one of the new Product Managers at Spanning focusing on our backup and recovery tools. We're still innovating and have exciting things planned for 2021! I'd love to extend an invitation for you to join our product council and let your voice shape the future of our product roadmap. I'll reach out offline and am looking forward to working with you on making sure we deliver value over the next three years.

  ### 13. Good product, shocking customer service

**Rating:** 0.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Paul M. | CEO & Founder, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** November 10, 2020

**What do you like best about Spanning Backup?**

Seamlessly works at the back end backing up both files and email history. Restore function is easy and quick.

**What do you dislike about Spanning Backup?**

Terrible customer service especially since the move to Kaseya ownership. The billing system does not seem to work for a credit card and is amateur (or was in June 2020 when I cancelled the service). As a SAAS company with a product offering that is not expensive, it needs this to be seamless, but it is not. What is worst when it failed that blame the customer rather than resolving the issue properly. We got pushed to an off-shore customer service team who were unresponsive and poor at resolving the issue. When we got frustrated and cancelled the service, they refused to provide any refund and put us to a debt collection firm. Easily the worst customer experience I have ever received from a SAAS company.

**What problems is Spanning Backup solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Point of time backups to prevent ransomware or lost data for cloud services

**Official Response from Dave Wallen:**

> Thanks for the feedback, Paul. We are sorry to hear about your negative experience with our customer service team. While we did have issues integrating our systems during our transition, it is not an excuse for what happened to you. We have made investments in time and systems to improve this function and we hope you will give us another chance to earn your trust.

  ### 14. Disappointed

**Rating:** 0.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Public Relations and Communications | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** September 13, 2018

**What do you like best about Spanning Backup?**

There is not a whole lot i can say about this product.

**What do you dislike about Spanning Backup?**

I just used the restore feature for the first time. I was very underwhelmed and a little mad about this because when the document library was restored it created a whole new subsite. How am i supposed to "restore" files when they dont go to the correct location. I have over 4,000 files that were restored that are now in a completely different site. Very very disappointing.

**What problems is Spanning Backup solving and how is that benefiting you?**

backups

**Official Response:**

> Sorry to hear that we didn't meet your expectations. We designed SharePoint restore to put the files back in a different site so that you can easily find all the restored files without having to go through different sites and document libraries. We are looking into adding restore options for in-place restores so that we can put a new version of the files if they exist within the Site Collection. Our product team is interested in chatting about the use cases for restoring in-place place for SharePoint to get your feedback. Would you mind sharing your email or reaching out to Product@spanning.com

  ### 15. Unfortunately very disappointing

**Rating:** 0.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Public Relations and Communications | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** September 12, 2018

**What do you like best about Spanning Backup?**

This product has a nice navigation for finding files.

**What do you dislike about Spanning Backup?**

After close to 4 months of backing up and having a vague amount of completion percentage the initial backup finally finished. Within these months we tested out another product that backed up the entire organization in a weekend. When asking spanning what the issue was they say it is on the Microsoft side which obviously is not the case. So in short very disappointed with the product.

**What problems is Spanning Backup solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Would be complete backup of the environment but I am unable to say that we have accomplished this.
